Jordan Breen gets butt hurt when people disagree with him. Smart guy, but he can eat a big one on this tip.

That's Sherdog for you ...

… their writers taking one of the fights of the year and calling “bullshit” when there is none.

by andherewego on Oct 11, 2009 1:11 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

And seriously, that wasn’t even in the ballpark of how bad the Bebee-Easton decion was. Did he write an article on that? Did he try to do anything about that bullshit decision? Or is all he capable of doing going into a closet and crying?

To be fair, it was a twitter.

He didn’t say it was terrible or the worst by far, just BS.

He calls it fight of the year. How many one sided “fight of the year” candidates have you seen. To me a fight has to be competitive and evenly match to pretty much qualify. (There are some exceptions like Gonzaga vs. CC, but those are VERY decisive finishes and I’d still rather call them “finish of the year”).

Just notice you respect Kid Nate when he calls BS (your sig), no respect for Sherdog staff opinion?

by natyong on Oct 11, 2009 9:22 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I respect the man’s opinion, but my whole issue is with him (and some others now it seems) calling it a “bullshit” decision. I just don’t see it that way. I saw it as a very close fight, that would have been fit to be scored as a draw, but for either man to win was definately not “bullshit”. I just feel like people are so upset Cerrone lose, they’re not giving Ben his props, when the kid fought his ass off, and showed a lot of heart getting out of those subs.

I had Cerrone winning it

but it could have gone either way. It was round 1 and thats it because Cerrone attempted the submissions and Henderson landed some good shots.

Anyone that is that pissed off with the decision isnt pissed off because they think it was a bad decision they’re pissed off because they were rooting for Cerrone.

by bigdmmafan on Oct 11, 2009 1:12 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Exactly. You’d think someone like Breen would have a level head about it? I honestly thought it could have been a draw.

Very true and one thing I agree with Breen is Judges should score more 10-10 rounds but Breen falls in love with scoring rounds a 10-10. Just look at some of his scores on sherdog for events I have never seen someone score so many dam 10-10 rounds.

Someone needs to grow up

Bullshit? No. I had it as either a tie or 48-47 Cerrone, but I can see how Henderson got the decision.

This is what happens when you leave a close fight in the hands of the judges. Deal with it.

At least Breen has reasonable evidence for his stance

I listen to his radio show all the time, and the thing is that even if you don’t agree with him, he does provide reasonable evidence for his position. It’s not like he is calling bs for no reason whatsoever. His stance is that Cerrone had rounds 1, 4, and 5 with round 5 possibly being a 10-8 because Henderson did hardly anything in round 5. I would get on his case more if he had absolutely no reasonable evidence for his stance, but he does provide it.

I didn’t think it was that bad of a decision and I don’t understand why he is upset about it? I mean it was a very close fight that could of gone either way. I don’t see how he could think it was BS, it was just that close?

by who me on Oct 11, 2009 1:26 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

People who are freaking out need to breathe a minute. The fight was extremely close, and I honestly feel it should have been a draw if anything, although thats terrible for an Interim Title fight. It was a close fight, the first round had an equal amount of dominance by Ben in the latter half of the round, which neutralized the submission attempts from Cerrone in the first half. The next round was all Ben, and from there it gets rough. It’s really not that bad guys. It was an awesome fight, and a close one…it was obvious some people would be upset when it went to the judges…it happens. Thats just the way it goes.

If anything now that the fight is over and done with

we should be uniting for Henderson to take out Varner. Lets come together in our hate of Varner and realize Cerrone will be back.

by bigdmmafan on Oct 11, 2009 1:34 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

In a perfect world, Henderson will beat Varner, and Cerrone either gets the next shot, or he beats Varner, then gets the shot. Another 5 round Henderson/Cerrone match is needed.

I can’t agree with that, because if memory serves it was more like the first 1/4 of the round where Henderson was in trouble, not so much a half. But thats just a judgement thing…it’s MMA, you can’t expect everyone to be happy when it’s that close.

And to be honest, we don’t know how close Ben was to being finished in those subs, because apparently this man has some sick arteries, and crazy flexibility. It was the very beginning of the fight and Ben didn’t seem phased by those sub attempts at all, so I gave him the round.

Why did your post do that? But yeah, this fight could be one of the greatest example of a 5 round draw. But my biggest point is, the decision wasn’t bad enough for people to call it bullshit. It is VERY likely that if there had been some different judges, Cowboy could have won. Just depends on who scored how heavily for what. This decision shouldn’t overshadow how impressive both men looked tonight.

by who me on Oct 11, 2009 1:55 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hadn’t even considered the possibility of that being a 10-8 round. Yet, in the context of the criteria of a 10-8 round, what would constitute a 2 point advantage from the grappling position? In other words, I recognize that a knockdown, or multiple knockdowns and utter round dominance may warrant a 10-8 round. Yet, it seems that is significantly more difficult to warrant a 10-8 round if you are dominating by putting on multiple submissions.

A knockdown is basically a failed knockout, but they still score points

by Shaun32887 on Oct 11, 2009 4:02 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

That’s because the fighter who got hit was damaged.

Going for a submission is often like trying to hit a home run. You either get it or come up short and it’s just a long fly ball. Generally you don’t damage or tire your opponent out in a failed submission. I think that’s what we saw here.

by P Brady on Oct 11, 2009 1:58 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

How ? Easy its MMA thats how where anyone can be beat anyone at any given time. But hears my opinion on how Henderson can beat Varner. Henderson is also a great wrestler just like Varner who has just as much gas if not more then Varner in my opinion. In so many of Varners fights he gets gassed and his pace slows down in the latter rounds in some fights like the Hermes Franca fight Varner gasses real quick. When this happens Varner starts shooting lazy ass shots and totaly telegraphs his takedowns and I can See Henderson Pancaking Varner which could lead to Henderson doing many of things like getting Varner on his back, catching him in a choke or taking Varners back. Varners Gas Tank is his biggest weakness and enemy if Henderson takes this fight it will be from the 3rd round on when Varner starts to slow down. Thats how Henderson can win this fight

by Shocbomb on Oct 11, 2009 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I thought Cerrone won it 48-47 but I wasn’t at all surprised when it went the other way, it was a very close fight and very close fights get scored very tight. To say it was a BS decision I’d have to see a obvious screwjob and I just didn’t see anything that led me to believe the fight was anything but very close. That’s what surprised me about Breen’s comments he normally is pretty spot on about these things but I just don’t see where this was that awful of a decision.

But as a judge you wouldn’t be able to adjust your scoring in the first round later on in the fight once you recognize that henderson isn’t fazed by the sub attempts. Your point is dead on, because as a fan, most begin to devalue the sub attempts later in the fight. Judging fights has to be so hard.

knowing the outcome,

i watched it again … i can see why the judges scored the fight the way they did.

i’d concur with them … great work by Cerrone off his back, but Henderson’s sub defense was sick — and he landed more shots (and harder ones) than Cerrone. Henderson won the first three rounds, Cerrone won the last two. at the same time, i’d have had no problem with a draw.

i’d say it was judged pretty well. and yes, fight of the freakin’ year.

On a non-troll tip.

1) It’s amusing people would cast me as being “upset” Cerrone lost for any interest in Cerrone, as I’ve spent the week talking about how Henderson was going to be a hellish style match-up for him and that people would be wise to bet on Henderson at +300.

2) I think people’s sensibilities are being shocked here by the phrase “bullshit”. At year’s end when we do the Sherdog Awards, this won’t even be broached for Robbery of the Year. But, I nonetheless think it’s bullshit when a fighter should’ve cleanly got three rounds loses because his opponent landed a handful of shots on top, nevermind that the actual scoring criterion in the unified rules reads:

“3. If 90% of the round is grounded one fighter on top, then effective grappling is weighed first. Clean striking is weighed next. If clean strikes scored in the round, the Judge shall factor it”

Also, I am Vitor Belfort’s karate trainer, and I paid off the Virginia judges.

I might watch Mtagwa-Juanma Lopez again right now. I wasn’t giving it due attention during WEC until I looked over and realized that they were donkey konging each other.

Also, yes. I’ve kept a running tab on candidates for each category all year long, and after Easton-Beebe, I legitimately though about deleting all of them and just writing it in as the preemptive winner before we vote in January.

by Jordan Breen on Oct 11, 2009 2:15 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hell yeah, WEC really put on a hell of a show. The Fabiano upset was another zinger tonight. And regarding the Easton travesty…I’m lenient when it comes to how decisions go, I understand Judging in MMA has a ways to go before we are done with ignorant judges…but what happened that night was just lunacy. The picture of Easton’s hand being raised is classic. Chase’s face of shock, Big John looking disgusted to have to raise Easton’s hand, and Easton with the biggest smile on his face he could possibly conjure up.

not all states adopt the same text. and with this text striking on the ground get underweighted when we know that is not the case when a guy is on top.

These are the unified rules scoring criteria. While obviously not everyone (or, almost no one) actually adheres to them properly, it should be expected that they do. After all, that’s why they were written, codified and accepted.

I agree. I mean I make laws about driving, like people infront of me should move to one side, but for some reason they never get followed. I write them for a reason.

But very little direction is given to judges on weighting. Even in the unified rules. Weighted first second and third means very little. These guys just wing it some times. Just to f with us.

people said the same thing when Rampage said he got his ass kicked against Forrest and that that proved that that was a good decision….what a fighter says right after the fight have no effect on “the discussion”…some people try and be classy and/or are pissed at themselves so they say things like “I got dominated”, “I clearly lost”, “I got my ass kicked”, when in reality they could know they won but kept it too close and instead of taking away from the other guys win they take the high road…until a week later when they see the fight again and decide that they clearly won…

If you were a fan of the JBS, you’d know that Jordan uses love of his wardrobe as motivation for not getting fat.

We need more people that actually understand MMA enough to actually breakdown fights. Most MMA pundits don’t have the ability, that’s why they spend all of their time talking about shit like the politics of title shots, fight card payrolls, and over analyzing match making.

THERE IS NO WAY

Ben Henderson took the fight to Cerrone. Both fighters gave it their best. Cerrone’s lack of takedown defense killed him. Ben saw what was working and he worked it. The decision was a good one. If you want to watch the sport formerly known as boxing, go ahead. I am sure you will not complain about any of the decisions because you will have fallen asleep before the final bell.

Honestly I have a hard time getting too upset because this is about the 6’th bullshit high profile fight that i’ve seen this year. It’s embarrasing to see these guys fight their asses off only to be screwed over by incompetent judges who have no idea how to score fights.

Cerrone won round 1, 4, 5 it’s as clear as day but as usual judges decide on a whim what scores and doesn’’t score depending on who’s fighting.

Something has to be done about this, it’s gotten out of hand and it’s hurting the sport i’m starting to reach boxing type levels of disgust when I see bullshit like this happen.

Three judges in Texas scored the first round for Cerrone as did many other…now if you want to argue that round 5 was a 10-8 round you have my ear…but the first round was close.

What was clear is that in the 1st, Cerrone had two FAILED submission attempts, while Henderson SUCCESSFULLY landed numerous face-tenderizing strikes. I was sitting in the 4th row & Cowboy’s face was pretty smashed on the way to his corner.

These guys are both great fighters; there’s probably a good chance regardless of how the title fight swings that we might see these guys butt heads again sooner than later. If the WEC can promote it as a compelling rematch there’s no reason to think it won’t happen.

I personally scored it 48-47, I know Leland and others saw it that way as well. 48-46 would have been quite a stretch.

I guess Compustrike didn’t do stats for this fight. I would really have liked to have seen the total stats for round one. I had Ben winning a close 1st round but could really see it being scored either way. I know he landed far more strikes and even took Cerrone down at least a couple times, I believe. Donald pretty much had the attempted guillotine and Ben got the escape. I thought that Ben did enough good work after that escape to overcome Donald’s work in that round.

Cerrone also had the triangle in the first

his submissions were incredibly slick in that first round, but you also have to Credit Henderson for his work escaping the dang things. incredibly close fight. the decision wasn’t bullshit … great work by both guys. i would’ve had no problem with a Henderson win, a Cerrone win or a draw.

by bobthewriter on Oct 11, 2009 10:38 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The triangle wasn't fully locked on.

His neck was out of that shit. That is the reason he survived and was even punching Cowboy from there.

Round 1

I am the biggest JBS fan there is, and I have not yet listened to the beatdown after the bell, but I don’t see how you can say that round 1 should clearly be for either fighter. Personally, I think that the Guillotine was close, but I could tell that the triangle was not, so I didn’t give as much credit for that as many other people did. For me it came down to whether the guillotine or the last three minutes were worth more, and I gave it to Henderson. However, I would not have been upset at all if Cerrone had won, as it was a fantastic fight and round one was razor close.

by KyleAskine on Oct 11, 2009 10:42 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Correct.

The triangle was clearly NOT locked on to his neck. It wasn’t a choke, it was a desperate hold.

1-Not fight of the year. Not even fight of October.

2-Close decision, could have easily gone either way. I had it 48-47 for Cerrone, with him winning 1, 4 and 5. There was nothing even close to a 10-8 round in this fight.

3-This was the worst fight I have seen from Cowboy and I have been lucky enough to see most of his fights at Ring of Fire.

I think this exposed Cerrone a lot. He isn’t a great fighter. He is a very entertaining, good fighter, who brings it most of the time. He looked thrown off his game by the take downs, his BJJ was somewhat exposed, in that he has some slick moves, but is generally very loose and he definitely needs to work on his wrestling. I’m not saying this to put him down, but in hopes that he continues to work on his game and get better and better, and not get satisfied in being a fighter that has a lot of holes but usually pleases the fans. I think Henderson was just the worst possible match for him, strong, good wrestler and hard to submit.

by BJJDenver on Oct 11, 2009 1:56 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He’s definitely skilled and quite a specimen at 155. His cardio and ability to take damage are absolutely ridiculous.

That being said it was a pretty similar fight to what he had with Varner. He’s lazy with his TDD which puts him on the bottom and then he’s happy to sit in guard to try for submissions while eating bombs. Any other LW but BJ Penn (and maybe Guida) would have been finished taking the GnP that Varner and Henderson put on him.

Of course, he comes out in R4 onward and looks very impressive because his opponents are gassed from taking him down and beating him up for 3 rounds and he apparently doesn’t feel pain. He should lobby for 7 round fights.

I love the wars as a fan, but I’m not really a fan of:

- fighters who could be great but take unnecessary damage for no reason – after taking enough big shots, your chin will go eventually
- fighters who are content to be taken down and fight from guard and then lose decisions – not a surprise since bottom position is generally better than top and considered to be by the judges as well

Cerrone also could’ve given up his sub attempts for mount once or twice but didn’t.

He’s an exciting but frustrating guy to watch.

Eh..

Just rewatched Cerrone/Henderson. Gross needs to be better at breaking down the body of a fight if he wants to be considered reputable, instead of whining about what appears to be one of his favorite fighters taking a deserved loss (Cerrone even solemnly nodded along before the winner was announced). There’s no controversy here. And it’s not a FOTY contender, either (though, it was a good fight).

Truly epic fight.

Ben won that dec. by his sheer number of takedowns and from all the strikes he landed while in Don’s guard. There were really a lot. Dont get me wrong, Don had a lot of success too with his standing strikes and all of those sub attempts, but he just couldn’t out score all the ones from Ben in the first 3 rounds.

Also, how did Ben not die while in…let me count…1..2..3..99999…hmm…lost count…all of those f-ing submissions???

by kamachi on Oct 11, 2009 11:42 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think anyone is arguing that Ben won the last round and he did a heck of a lot more in the first than just escape a submission attempt. Cerrone didn’t do all that much in between (which is probably why even he is saying he lost that fight). It was a very close fight.

How do you score a failed sub attempt? Is it worth a point, the same as a takedown,a punch, a minute of ground and pound? A submission attempt that last over a minute and then the guy gets out is still just one failed sub attempt.
