Mad Xyientist on the UG says Semerzier > Fabiano ranks as #5 upset of the year:

1. Joe Warren over Kid Yamamoto (DREAM 9)
2. Paulo Thiago over Josh Koscheck (UFC 95)
3. Brett Rogers over Andrei Arlovski (Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields)
4. Brian Bowles over Miguel Torres (WEC 42)
5. Mackens Semerzier over Wagnney Fabiano (WEC 43)
6. Joe Warren over Chase Beebe (DREAM 7)
7. Toby Imada over Jorge Masvidal (Bellator V)
8. Mike Kyle over Rafael Feijao (Strikeforce)
9. Ray Mercer over Tim Sylvia (Adrenaline 3)
10. Jucie Formiga over BJ Kojima (Shooto RevEx 1)

great find Nick. But man… Ray Mercer over Tim Sylvia has to be number 2.

Plus was Brian Bowles over Torres that big of an upset, or am I really the only one to pick Bowles?

by "Mr. NC-17" on Oct 10, 2009 11:43 PM EDT up reply actions

No way – a ton of people were picking Mercer because Sylvia came in over 300 pounds for that fight and obviously wasn’t taking it seriously.

Bowles over Torres was not that big of an upset. That was a #1 versus #2 matchup. Sure, Torres was the favorite, but everyone knew going in that Bowles had a good chance, especially after watching Torres get pushed to limit in his previous fight.

This was absolutely the #1 upset of the year without question. Joe Warren was a world champion wrestler before MMA, and KID was coming off a long layoff. Mackens Semerzier was a 3-0 (or 5-0, depending on where you check) nobody over the #3 guy in his weight class, and his prior victories weren’t exactly against noteworthy names (Sherdog has three fights listed, against 1-0, 0-0, and 0-0 competition). Honestly, Fabiano/Semerzier was such a huge mismatch on paper that it probably shouldn’t even have been sanctioned.

Yep, and Fabiano was subbed to top it off. It’s kind of akin to, say, Vinny Maghalaes knocking out Rampage.

Mackens Patience was the key

He was so calm as he got taken down that he was able to pull that off on such an accomplished guy like Wagney

This makes me mad. Wagnney is one of my favorite fighters, and I’m surprised he left his arm in like that, but boy does Mackens deserve all credit in the world, and a huge congrats to him.

Pretty much. I liken it to Kang-Mousasi in terms of one guy just sleeping on the job.

Yeah, it really looked like Wagnney was giving him no respect, like he wanted to rush in, get the win and just move on.

He should call Jardine, maybe Keith can hook him up with a few support groups.

Good to see Eddie Wineland back in the win column after his last fight I wasn’t sure he was going to be around but that was a big win for him.

Besides that seeing Wagney get tapped out was insane, but at least it will quiet all the people saying he needed to be on the televised show well there you go.

The Fabiano fight was the third fight shown I believe, it wasn’t much a fight though Wadney landed a right hand got the take down and then got tapped.

Told you...

I train with MAC at LINXX in Va Beach.. he is a beast.. Wait till you see his striking

Well, at least now Fabiano wont have to fight Aldo for the title. Got to enjoy the little things…

by dancingChicken on Oct 11, 2009 8:20 AM EDT reply actions

Yep.

Plus WEC just discovered another great fighter. While I am sure the plan was for Fabiano to steamroll Semerzier, Reed Harris has to be happy about having yet another guy on his roster that people can’t wait to see fight again.
