Mirko Cro Cop Still Coping With Loss to Junior Dos Santos, Will Finish UFC Contract
This Fan Post was promoted to the front page by Nick Thomas.
In an interview with Nokaut.com (translated by Fighters Only), Mirko Cro Cop talked about coping with his devastating loss to Junior Dos Santos:
"I was very, very disturbed after the loss to Dos Santos. I was in such a state that I wished to hang myself in my hotel room so I would be gone. Three losses in my last seven fights is nothing but a disaster to me. That’s a terrible score and I’m not happy about it"
"I already know some things that I did wrong both in the fight and in the preparation for the fight, but there are many questions that remain to be answered. I am seriously thinking about hiring a psychiatrist to help me out. I have already made some calls about it."
While Mirko has had problems with getting more focused and motivated to fight, he says that he won't stop fighting just yet:
"If someone offered me millions of dollars to quit my career right now I would not accept it. [Fighting] is my life and I don’t know any other way to live... I will make some changes in my training, because I wish to fight twice more in the UFC. I am a fighter, and I will find the motivation and strength I need"

Wow, I hope he’s able to exorcise the demons troubling him. He’s one of my all time favorite fighters, and I’d love to see him with the hunger he had just 3 years ago, but not at the risk of his mental state.
That said, I can’t help but be selfish and want to see him fight again…

I would love to see the old CC kickin fools into oblivion…but if he’s not in the right state of mind, I don’t want to see him be a stepping stone for younger fighters.

Watching CC walk out of the Octagon at 103 is one of the saddest things I've seen. Pleae get help, Mirko

“Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better”
I hope CC doesn’t search advices in Beckett’s books and will end his career, because it’s getting dangerous.

Yeah, I hope he wouldn’t try to take advice like that literally – it was meant in context as an attitude for life as a whole (cf. Camus’s Myth of Sisyphus). Perhaps his ‘failing better’ would be run a gym for the next breed of head-kickers – still training, still fighting, just not competing. I’ve also always loved the idea of retired fighters becoming refs.

I'm betting on the loser of Rothwell/Velazquez
as Cro Cop’s next opponent. The days of the old Cro Cop are done and I’m shocked he didnt get cut and so the best the UFC can hope for is for him to help establish their younger stars.
by bigdmmafan on Oct 10, 2009 4:18 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Get cut.
Do you think Lorenzo Fertitta would’ve wasted his time flying out to Croatia to have a meeting with a guy who they would possibly cut after his next fight?
Dos Santos did go off as a favorite in that fight. It’s not like Cro Cop lost to Mostapha Al-Turk.

I could of sworn
at the 103 post fight conference Dana said Cro Cop was done that he was just too old.

I know what you’re referring to, but I think he was more or less insinuating that Cro Cop might retire not that he was going to be cut.

They can still use Cro Cop to headline European shows, even if he is losing he still has a lot of value for their next show in Germany.

Jeeze. CC should probably definitely see someone about his mindset. A sports psychologist can do wonders. Just ask GSP.

Yeah, I think seeing a sports psychologist can only be good for Mirko at this point. I don’t doubt that physical deterioration is playing a role in his decline as a fighter, but I think the mental issues might be worse.

No me. I think it’s better for him to go fishing like he wanted to.

A sports psychologist would be a really good idea for him I think. The problem is obviously in his head rather than his physical tools failing him.

Gotta love a fighter speaking the truth as he knows it, as opposed to some posturing nonsense. Respect.

It really makes me sad when a fighter loses badly a few times and you hear them mention thoughts of suicide, or something like Arlovski’s Russian Roulette thing…
I’d love to see Mirko get help and become dangerous again, but truthfully, I was content with him hanging up the gloves.

I think the nature of combat sports – and MMA in particular – makes an especially difficult daught for an athlete to swallow when the lose repeatedly or go through a rough patch. There’s no one else in the ring, so there’s no one else to blame; and it’s a helluva tough thing to admit that another person was simple BETTER. It’s kind of ego shattering, especially if going off of record or reputation or whatever, that other person looks like an underdog. Even rolling BJJ, I’ve been subbed by what I thought were inferior opponents, and it’s really disheartening.
I hope Mirko, whether or not he ever fights again, can gain some perspective.

Oh yeah, definately. I mean, anyone who’s ever lost a fight, no matter where it was…the ring, the streets, or anywhere else…the whole idea that YOU failed YOURSELF, it hurts. I’ve been there, I’ve been in the gym and been outclassed, all of that. Thats why being a fighter takes such a different personality…you have to be confident in yourself, but you also have to pick yourself up when you lose. Some people can’t do that. I’d actually say, MANY people can’t do that. Atleast, do that and keep going successfully.

I think i hear a Chuck vs crocop match up. Legends of striking!. Fist vs foot action!

Poor guy. That sucks to hear him talk like that. I have always had a lot of respect for Mirko. He has always been humble and graced us with some of the greatest KO’s in MMA. I hope he gets it together. Even if he doesn’t perform the same way, hopefully he can get his head straight.

On a slightly different note...
Why was this ‘promoted’? If Anton (& Scott, too) are staffers, why are their posts still getting the ‘promoted’ tag? Even when Leland was still publishing in the FanPosts instead of the direct front page after his ascension, he didn’t get the label.

Worked for GSP...
When GSP lost to hughes the first time, he saw a sport psychologist… seems to have worked out…

If kimbo impresses on his UFC fight, I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw that fight.

Sports Psychologist and A new gym (Greg Jackson MMA)
I think both would be good for Cro Cop i hear Greg Jackson does wonders in the confidence dept.

CroCop has been my idol and to see him not pulling the trigger in so many opportunities vs dos santos really saddened me.
i know CC might be wary of dos santos’s power but it just seemed like he was afraid of getting KO’ed again.
hope this works out for him
go Cro Cop!

What happened to fishing in Privlaka?
I thought Cro Cop said he wants to quit because instead of thinking about fighting he thinks about wanting to fish … now he says he wants to be back again … sorry I’m just not convinced . However I am convinced he has nothing for the elite guys in heavyweight , he can try cutting down maybe. Or he can just get a few easy fights before he quits , why not…
by JoelMan on Oct 11, 2009 7:15 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
It's funny
because I think if he’d cut down right off the bat (when he came to the UFC), he might’ve done better. He’s a lean 220, which is less than Forrest; who knows how cutting for (what might be) the first time in his life would affect him, but it might just be what Mirko needs to jumpstart his career. Because at this point, he’s been soundly defeated by 3 of the UFC’s better HW’s in GG, Kongo, and Dos Santos, but they’ve all had a considerable size advantage on him.
He also needs to get his hunger back. But i’d love to see him fight Randy if he loses to Vera.
