Tito Ortiz Berates A Homeless Man

Despite some of the things that I've written in my time here at BloodyElbow, I don't consider myself to be some sort of behavior police for fighters but when Tito Ortiz pulled this whole trip on a homeless guy, what in the hell was he thinking?

I'm honestly ashamed of Ortiz being in public, obviously on camera and berating a homeless man for being lazy.  What does he know about the situation that put this man on the streets?  It's really nice that Tito was able to get himself up out of "the streets" that he came from through hard work.  But for every success story where a man was able to survive these conditions and become a superstar in a sport there are tens of thousands of stories of men dying in those same streets.

Look, maybe Tito was right and the guy is just some lazy bum who would rather look for handouts than put in an honest days work.  Or maybe he is wrong and this is a guy who got into a situation he can't find a way out of.  Either way, this was just a dumb time for Tito to choose to deliver a pointless lecture.  These are the moments that can stick in peoples minds to cement our sport as one for cruel meatheads when Tito could have simply left it as "I'm sorry brother, but no."

If Tito gives the guys a handout, and people see it on TV, what will other homeless people do? It would be a nightmare for Tito on the streets because everyone would ask for money and they can reference this guy saying “hey you gave that one guy money…”. Tito set an example and I hope people follow it. Begging won’t get you anywhere.

There is a choice between...

laying into a guy as lazy and handing him money. It’s called saying “no”

Or better yet

“Sorry man, I only carry plastic.”

Works for me every time (though if I’m feeling benevolent that day I’ll give a bum a cigarette or something).

I get the feeling Tito was showboating for the cameras and trying to sound inspirational or something, but he just came across as a condescending jackass. Like Dr. Phil, but with a poorer command of English.

“Let me tell you how you feel…buddy!”

And it's true for me

I only get cash to pay my kids their allowance. Not having cash saves me money:

  • Can’t give to the homeless
  • Can’t buy my kids shit from vending machines
  • Can’t get fat(ter) off of the vending machines at work

WIN WIN WIN

Nice

I commend Tito all the time for his relations with the fans and public—-he is on the whole outstanding, even exemplary in this arena. I also sympathize with Tito in that he has a camera on him more than the vast majority of others.

That said, I agree with Brent. If you must, a simple no is sufficient.

I would have done the same thing. If you actually came from the streets as I/Tito did, you would understand the lecture. Growing up on the street you know people who beg for a living. Tito probably knew such people, and that’s why he has such a disdain for beggars.

Not to mention the number of times you see the guy you give money to head right over to the liquor store. Hence the lecture. I have given so many of the same lectures its not even funny. Again street people will understand and many other people won’t.

There is a well dressed lady that begs at an intersection I go through a lot while she listens to her ipod. I laugh at her. My girlfeind got pissed off once and went on a rant, not to the lady, but to me in the car. I told her “maybe its her first day homeless.” It’s a joke that makes me laugh even if it’s stolen.

I think a person’s reaction when a “bum” approaches them, really defines their character. I never understood people that were willing to put forth energy on judging someone and wondering if they “really” need it.

Then again, I wouldn’t expect a person who gleefully dates a woman who has sex for money to specialize in compassion.

With that said, I’m not defending his actions. I’m just saying that everyone commenting here should consider those times a homeless person has approched them and you think to yourself Oh God, Oh God… I hope he doesn’t talk to me. by szucconi on Oct 1, 2009 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Why should he be “sorry” he doesn’t have any money? And if he’s saying something that won’t get him stabbed, isn’t that subtly acknowledging that homeless people are threatening, and if thats the case, why berate Tito for aggressively attacking a threat?

I think Tito was being a douche, but the very fact that anybody feels the need to apologize to homeless people says something about why a guy like Tito goes off.

by Michaelthebox on Oct 1, 2009 7:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't follow this at all

Sorry doesn’t necessarily pertain to the fact you don’t have money. Why do you say ‘sorry’ at a funeral? Did you kill the person in the coffin?

Arguing the use of some of the words we employ in different social situations is the stuff of stand up comics, not serious discussions. They are what they are, and we use them accordingly.

You’re talking vicariously out of your own experiences. Even if most people who say “no” while they have spare change are assholes, at least they simply said no. This guy doesn’t just have spare change in his pocket, but a fat wallet with hundreds, and he was so arrogant that he lectured him too. Tito is not just a bad person, but he’s worse then most people.

by ontite on Oct 1, 2009 6:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I can’t actually watch the video, but based on the title of this post, it sounds to me like Tito verbally engaged the vagrant and didn’t have anything nice to say to the man. So, if you’re asking if that guy is worse than someone who simply abstains from giving a homeless man money, then yes, he is worse.

It’s not such an open-and-shut case. I’ve had this discussion before, and there is a lot of moral ambiguity in these scenarios. Is one responsible for blind charity to a fellow man, or should that which is earned be kept and encourage others to follow suit?

I love the stuff Brent writes, but to title it “Tito Ortize Berates a Homeless Man” is a tad sensationlist, IMO. Perhaps to Brent, it is a berating, but I just don’t see it that way. You really need to see what Tito says.

Nobody is saying you have to give homeless people money. I’ll admit it right now: I rarely give out money.

What everyone agrees on (or should agree on) is that if you don’t want to give money, just say something like “sorry, man” – saying “ever hear of a job” is being a jerk. That’s Brent’s point.

I’m not sure if it’s true or not but a few people in the comments section on TMZ were saying, the homeless guy was harrassing people well before he asked Tito for Money. Apparently he had harrased a lady who had given him some change and yelled at her for just giving him a few cents.

by asmiley420 on Oct 1, 2009 2:51 PM EDT reply actions

When I was in college there were tons of bums on our little college street. They would beg for money all the time. We were warned by the police not to give them money because they would go buy crack cocaine and get arrested. The cops didnt process these people (no ID, no address, not worth it I guess) and they would end up back on the streets the next day.

Also, when I was in the ER for an illness, there was a homeless guy who checked himself in on a cold night for a warm place to sleep. He was complaining of chest pain and was really just looking for a warm place to sleep (he told me all of this because our beds were next to each other). He even asked if I could switch IVs with him because I had a morphine drip (I said no) The nurse by law had to tend to him though he had no insurance, good thing I didnt have to have urgent surgery (I did). He got up and left at 6am without checking out. The nurse said he and others do this all the time.

I dont have much sympathy for these people. There are non profits and half way houses for them to get back on their feet and get a job. The only thing holding them back is their addictions, but thats not our fault. No one forced you to start smoking crack.

by ryanwk628 on Oct 1, 2009 2:54 PM EDT reply actions

That's not really true

While I’m sure there are plenty of homeless guys that are in their position because of drugs, 90% of them have some sort of mental illness beyond addiction.

by WestbergIDFC on Oct 1, 2009 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

90%? Source?

Many of these people, mentally ill or not, are addicts of one kind or another. There was a guy who died in an alley on campus because he drank a bottle of rubbing alch. Lots of mentally Ill people function fine in our society. It depends on their circumstances. Either way, they can collect from the state, get meds an apartment without doing anything. There are also programs for job placement. But for most of these people, drugs are the reason they have no money. Dealers know they are reliable customers.

Let’s have the courtesy accept random numbers for what they are.

You don't look like a Tanaka.

by spectaa on Oct 1, 2009 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

My source is me

I work at a hospital in Minneapolis, and volunteered at a food shelter when I was in medical school. Granted, our homeless population probably isn’t the same as somewhere like L.A., N.Y., or Vegas, but I’m sure it’s representative to some degree.

So this 90% is obviously an estimate, but I don’t think it’s that far off. Bureau of Justice Statistics has come out and said ~ 55% of prisoners suffer from mental illness, so I don’t think 75% + is much of a stretch.

by WestbergIDFC on Oct 1, 2009 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Now you got me curious...

I just briefly checked our hospital literature database, and came up with this paper published in April.

Am J Orthopsychiatry 2009 Apr;79(2):236-43

Their brief case series said ALL homeless people suffered from some sort of mental illness. 100%.

by WestbergIDFC on Oct 1, 2009 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Right, but does that take into account that some of them became mentally ill only after being on the streets so long?

I’d say it’s fairly obvious that 100% of legitimate homeless are mentally ill once you pick them up off the street.

I think the % we’re looking for is how many homeless people ended up there due to mental illness.

Knowing Tito's opinion of himself,

He probably thinks that little soliloquy changed that poor guy’s life.

Way to go Tito. Real impressive, digging into a homeless man like that. I don’t know what the exact circumstances are with that homeless man and where he lives, but being from Vancouver, we have our own big homeless / affordable housing issue. It’s something that has become a big issue in the past few years, especially with the Olympics coming and the local government trying to “clean up” the streets any way they can, like giving out jay walking tickets to the homeless. It’s all in an attempt at pushing along the almost inevitable gentrification of the downtown east side of Vancouver.

The reality in Vancouver is that much of the homeless problem is due to mental illness. My gf works as a psych nurse and local facilities are being closed down due to funding cuts, which means there is more pressure on existing facilities, which means only the most unstable patients are kept while others are released early, before they are completely well. Once they get into the real world, they find they cannot cope and end up on the streets, which only causes them to spiral further and further into their madness. This is what is happening in Vancouver, and you gotta figure this is what’s happening in other cities as well. When you see a homeless person, there’s probably more to his/her story than you think. Tito should have just said no. How hard is that?

I love me some Sexyama!

by nastyem on Oct 1, 2009 3:25 PM EDT reply actions

I couldn’t disagree more with this article. Tito was right on and this guy needs to go get himself a job and be a productive member of society. Tito said no and the guy kept pestering him leading to the lecture. The guy looks in good health isn’t old and there is no reason he can’t have at least a minimum wage job. The only reason he is outside fancy clubs with rich people begging for money is because he makes more doing that than he could with a real job. If more people were like Tito and would stop enabling people like this he would be forced to get a job, be productive, and pay his fair share of taxes.

Dispite the constant smirk from the homeless dude, Tyrese handled that very well. Props to the man. Tito is Tito…did he handle it well? No. Should we go on a witch hunt because Tito went off on the dude? No.

For all we know, Tito could have been having a shitty day and just went off the deep end. I know I’ve had moments where I go overboard on someone for something simple…it happens. Now let’s keep speculating on the Kimbo comeback, and start hyping UFC 104. =)

When I lived in California I used to drive through Salinas a couple times a week and there was a guy sitting in this little park area in the middle of he road downtown with a sign that said, “Homeless Vet, Want a sandwich and a beer.” So every few days, one of the guys in my unit would get the guy a sandwich and a beer. He was always appreciative, and evidently this was as much of life as he could handle. It was cool.

On the other hand, I had a kid run up to me when I lived in Baltimore and tell me an elaborate story about how the cops had run over some little girl (a surprisingly common occurrence in B-more) and how he was collecting money for her funeral. And all I could tell him was, “This is the third time you’ve told me this story in a month. How many times are they gonna bury this little girl?”

In the UK 1 in 10 homeless people are ex-armed forces.

In the US it’s even worse, 1 in 4 homeless people are ex-armed forces.

So chances are very good that any homeless person you see fought for your country. I thought Tito was supposed to be very pro army, yet he’ll pre-judge anyone who is homeless and look down upon them, even with the very real possibility that they are someone who he in fact is supposed to be very supportive of…

by drudog1715 on Oct 1, 2009 4:40 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

The unfortunate reality is that Tito is a self-promoting douche-tard and was likely just playing it up for the cameras, regardless of whether or not he meant the things he said. I’d bet my next paycheck that if there had not been any media around that he’d have avoided any sort of confrontation entirely. Either way, it was a weak move and one he deserves to be criticized for.

"Chaaaaaange?"

I wouldn’t exactly call the guy “lazy” because I’ll bet begging for a living is HARD work. I sit on my ass all day at a desk and pull in money doing that. Who’s the lazy one?

Still, I don’t think what Tito did was wrong. The guy asked Jenna, kept standing there after being turned down, and then asked Tito. “Leave these creatures alone!” (Many rec’s to anyone who knows where that quote is from)

by YelirNoj on Oct 1, 2009 6:48 PM EDT reply actions

I just can’t understand any criticism here. Tito used himself as an example, right in the guy’s face. It’s not as if he just called him a bum, he elaborated on what he was saying. If the guy wasn’t lazy, he wouldn’t be next to Tito begging for handouts. He’d be resting somewhere, preparing for the next day’s search for a better tomorrow in my humble opinion. As a former homeless guy myself, I like what Tito did there. Sugar coating doesn’t get anywhere with hardheaded people. SOmetimes, in your face, no BS advice doesn’t either. Can’t win em all.

Seems a bit nitpicky.

by bonez2799 on Oct 1, 2009 8:11 PM EDT reply actions

So your idea of lazy is going around begging people for money, while the alternative is resting somewhere and elaborating? Think you got things a little mixed up there buddy? Well we don’t know for sure man, maybe the ‘bum’ who asked him for money worked for a company whose stock crashed and screwed him over. Just saying that we can’t judge.

That guys seemed pretty articulate and determined for a mentally ill bum. He also had a freshly shaven head and face and managed to get in front of the reporters which makes me question the validity of the situation.

Celebs do not like paparatzi because they say and do terrible things to get you upset for a good shot. They dont say “hey tito simile” they say “hey tito, how does it feel to get smoked by the dragon” then take his picture. You always here stories about how celebs attack these guys… its because they instigate the situation that much to get a photo.

The guy in the clean white beater and sweat shirt, in front of the camera men, not picked up by club security, was likely placed there by the photographers as a set up.
