Dan Henderson Talks About His Contract Situation
Dan Henderson talked to sherdog about the meeting he had last week with Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta, regarding a potential 5 fight deal:
"It didn’t go quite as I hoped. Let’s put it that way. It could have been a lot better... Obviously I feel my value has gone up enough to warrant what I’ve asked for. I don’t think I’m being greedy by any means. There’s a lot of numbers being thrown around out there and I feel I should be paid what I ask for. They feel like, I guess, I’m not worth that though.
I haven’t talked to anyone [from another promotion] yet. I’m just kind of giving the UFC a chance to figure things out. I don’t want to be disrespectful in any way and I don’t want to waste anyone else’s time, like Strikeforce."
Vitor Belfort had already verbally agreed to fight Anderson Silva for the belt this January, and this did not make Henderson happy. He feels that deserves the title shot as he has already beaten Belfort before:
"Yeah, I’m not real thrilled about that. And I like Vitor. He’s a good guy and he’s been around for a long time, but I just don’t understand why he gets to jump to the front of the line, especially when I beat him... I think it’s something that might have slipped their minds, that (that fight) happened. I’m not exactly sure. You’ll have to ask them on that, but to me, that’s what it seemed like.
I don’t know what they’re thinking. They haven’t gotten back to me at all since I flew out last week. I’m not trying to pin them over a barrel or anything. I feel like I was just undervalued before, especially toward the end of my contract."
Dan Henderson earned $350,000 in his last fight, which included a $100,000 'KO of the night' bonus. He also mentioned that he's willing to fight Nate Marquardt as long as he gets this deal done, which really points to money as the sticking point of the entire deal.

Good to hear
Hope he gets the deal done and fights Nate. Can’t wait for that fight! Wish it was in Manchester though.
I sense a Belfort rematch soon too.
Thnx non-staff member weo.

Staff or not, It’s good to have you around to do alot of the updates & posts etc. during the quiet time in the US of A. Keeps bored @ work people like me here in the UK entertained!
On topic, I don’t know if I agree with the undervalued assessment of Hendo. He lost his first 2 fights in UFC and hasn’t impressed too much except against Bisping. He is a legend and deserves good pay from an MMA standpoint, but UFC? Not so much…
Tough call. Although he seems to be a good company man a la Franklin and could maybe get rewarded for that…

Dear Dan,
They jumped Vitor ahead of you because Anderson very recently beat you and hasn’t fought Vitor yet. Even though you beat Vitor once, they saw that you took a very close and controversial decision over Franklin, while Vitor KTFO Franklin in quick and impressive fashion and figured that maybe that is worth considering also. They want you to beat somebody in a meaningful fight and in a meaningful fashion to suggest that Anderson won’t do the exact same thing to you again. That’s why they want to see if you can get past Nate Marquardt. Simply being a legend doesn’t equate to everyone needing to bend over backwards and give you whatever you feel you deserve.
…
I hope he works this out, too. And I hope Marquardt destroys him so we don’t have to hear more about how entitled he is to another shot right now.
i wonder if hendo asked for one of those 'paycheck linked to ppv buys' deals...
they seem to be all the rage these days.
There are still big fights for Henderson right now, and the immediate one being Henderson vs Marquardt. Even if Henderson loses, I see a couple good fights for him at Middleweight, but there are a lot of good fights for him at Lightheavy (Henderson vs any UFC top ten Lightheavy that he hasn’t fought would be a good fight). I can understand his stance in getting leapfrogged by Belfort and wanting what he thinks he deserves, but at the same time, the UFC is a business as well.
I think it’s something that might have slipped their minds, that (that fight) happened.
That applies to you and Silva as well Mr. Henderson…
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
I can just imagine Hendo bringing tape of his fight with Vitor to the meeting, showed it to Dana and Lorenzo, and then shouting in true Ricky Bobby style “THAT JUST HAPPENED!”.
Dana flips around the monitor and raises an eyebrow

The Silva beat Hendo already line is getting old....
Matt Hughes beat Frank Trigg convincently the first time and the rematch was made fairly quickly. Matt Hughes beat GSP the first time and GSP got a rematch. Chuck KTFO Randy and Randy had to beat Mike Van Arsdale to get a rematch. Silva destroyed Franklin the first time and Rich had to beat Travis Lutter to get a rematch. Anderson caught Hendo with a nice head/throat kick and had to submit him. Hendo is the only guy Anderson has faced that he hasn’t just beat the crap out of and say what you will about the first round of their fight, but Anderson’s Black Belt didn’t mean anything the entire time they were on the ground. The UFC is bending to much to Silva. He is not a huge pay-per-view draw and Dan and Nate should both fight him because they are the top contenders in 185.
Anderson’s Black Belt didn’t mean anything the entire time they were on the ground
I agree, it is not like Anderson took Dan’s back and choked him out…oh wait.
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
Anderson’s Black Belt didn’t mean anything the entire time they were on the ground
Notice I said that Anderson landed a nice head/throat kick that rocked Dan. There are a lot of fighters who are not Black Belts who finish fights with a rear naked choke after landing a great strike. Forrest finished Shogun with a RNC for crying out loud. Anderson spent almost the entire first period on his back in Guard and didn’t do anything. Which is why everyone says Henderson won the first round. Multiple takedowns and zero offense from the BJJ Black Belt.
Zero offense on both sides in the first round.
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
I applaud your patience.
Or boredom? Haha ;)

False
if you notice the way Hendo took Anderson down, he should’ve been able to take side easily, but Andy was able to modify a half guard to stop Dan from passing to the side, and when Hendo did try and pass to the side, Silva easily reclaimed god.
Those shots Hendo was hitting Anderson couldn’t have felt good, but they didn’t have enough power to stop him, and to be honest when a guy like Dan is on top of you, in smother mode, there’s not much you can do but wait for him to posture up to try and create a scramble

Silva easily reclaimed god.
Would have been handy to send him with Richard the Lionheart into the crusades! Silva could have been a hero like Alexander the Great if he was born in the right century.

I keep telling everyone that this guy is going to end up out of a job if he doesn’t change his attitude. He’s acting like he’s a big draw when in reality he’s nowhere near as valuable to the UFC as he thinks he is. If he keeps this up Nate The Great will be moving past him and he’ll end up fighting for SF and missing out on alot of money because of his dumb business skills.
Hendo would clean up house in Strikeforce, I think the UFC knows this and and doesn’t want this to happen. Being Strikeforce champion is better than being UFC gatekeeper wouldn’t you agree?
for all intents and purposes, just consider all my posts as works of satire.
Agreed about better to be SF champ then UFC Gatekeeper for sure, however he’d have to get past Gegard which would be no easy task, but definetly a good fight :) Also if they do sign Ricardo, theres a few good fights there for him, Gegard, Arona, Shields, Miller, Shamrock, and thats just off the top of my head as theres definetly more. I can actually see Coker signing up Hendo in a heartbeat too. He was/is prett popular in Japan and SF is paired up with DREAM making for some more huge fights there as well.
How do you Know where Im at? If you dont Know where Ive been...Understand where Im coming from??
It’s not better to be the SF champion if you are Henderson. It is very unlikely that SF can match the offer the UFC is making, never mind be able to beat it.
It’s better to be a SF champ than a gatekeeper to the upper level of the UFC, but that’s not what Hendo is, he’d be a gatekeeper in the sense that you have to get through him to be elite or get a title shot, so at that point it comes down to mostly money, and the money is in the UFC.
If Dan had his big run in the UFC instaed of Pride he’d be getting what he’s after. But because he’s not a UFC made fighter they’re not going to give the retirement package they gave Randy and Hughes. Which is to bad Dan deserves what he’s asking for. IMO He fought along time with out the pay days that guys are getting now, it would be nice to see him get that bread now towards the end of his career.
