The Real Threat To USA Wrestling? Title IX

Fightlinker makes an excellent point in the midst of cock and ball jokes.

It's been known to happen.

This came in the midst of a discussion of Maggie Hendricks' reporting (and Luke Thomas' excellent 'sky is not falling' post) on the angst felt by the traditional amateur wrestling establishment in the US at how many top collegiate wrestlers are making the leap right to MMA, with Jake Rosholt's WEC debut being the most recent example.  The overall feeling is that this growing sport, coupled with the loss of nearly 500 collegiate programs in the US over the last 39 years, could lead to a permanent drought in Olympic gold.

What happened 39 years ago?  The adoption of Title IX, which sought to end discrimination based on gender in America's educational system.  While it never specifically mentions athletics, it has been interpreted to mean that men's and women's athletic spending must be in parity.

The big problem with Title IX is it includes men's college football and college basketball, programs that a) cost lots of money and b) make unbelieveable shit-tons of it.  Volleyballs, softballs and swimsuits just don't cost that much, but the law is the law: parity in funding.  Thus, football and basketball get swank facilities and stadiums worthy of the pro's (the Seattle Seahawks played at the University of Washington's field while awaiting the completion of their new home, and there are hundreds of 40,000+ stadiums around the country, with Michigan's Big House capable of seating 100,000 at capacity), and other men's programs fall by the wayside, while women's field lacrosse is able to buy shiny new sticks and the curling team new brooms.

MMA might single-handedly save amateur wrestling in rural areas -  any kid that catches some MMA on TV is going to be intrigued, search around, and realize the nearest gym is 50 miles away or more away and oh yeah I'm 14 and can't drive.  Then, he'll see dudes in singlets during the prefight highlights (Rosholt, Cejudo, Hendo, etc) and ask his wrestling coach about them and he'll make the sale - the most dominant MMA fighters ever have been wrestlers, primarily (you'll hear the same thing from a BJJ coach, but go with me for a second).  A wrestler is born.

You want to save college wrestling?  Decouple men's college football and basketball from Title IX, with the express knowledge (or some sort of legal mandate) that these programs pay for the women's ones that can't even pay for themselves, let alone the school.

Or you could just legalize pot, tax it, use the money saved on jail cells ($100,000+ per year by some estimates for nearly a million marijuana offenses) for colleges and the tax revenue generated to buy rainbows and shit.  Just a thought.

I like the insinuation that “women’s sports that can’t even pay for themselves” are somehow less deserving of outside funding than a men’s sport that is similarly incapable of generating the necessary revenue to survive.

What makes wrestling so much more deserving than any women’s sport?

The above comment and the entire post… well done sir.

So why even bother with the comparison to women’s sports if it’s the popular men’s sports that are actually killing wrestling?

The whole Title IX debate always stinks of a sort of sexist elitism, as though an unprofitable male sport is worth saving while any number of frivolous women’s sports are just hogging all the free money.

Maybe instead of blaming outside factors for its lack of popularity, college wrestling should look inwards and consider what kind of changes need to be made to make the sport more interesting to ticket buyers and television sponsors.

A strong Olympic wrestling presence, as alluded to in a previous article about the death of wrestling, might be a good start. Michael Phelps may have single-handedly saved a number of ailing college swimming teams (both men’s and women’s) by stimulating renewed interest in the sport. It’s got to be hard for Americans to get excited about a sport that is dominated by countries like Belarus and Azerbaijan.

Just one thing. The Cardinals don’t play at a University Stadium. The University of Phoenix just owns the naming rights to the Cardinals’ stadium.

That said, Title IX did do a number on college wrestling.

I'll edit that - thanks for the catch

That being said, the Seahawks played at the University of Washington while waiting for their stadium to get done and two college stadiums, the Rose Bowl and Michigan’s Big House, seat over 100,000 people at max capacity.

Yea, your point is correct. In many schools football and men’s BB make enough money to pay for the entire athletic program at the school. It’s a very strange situation.

However, the Cardinals used to play in Arizona State’s stadium. That was before the University of Phoenix facility was built.

I never agree with any of your posts

This is good shit. Title 9 is a nice idea poorly executed.

I’ve yet to hear a more persuasive argument for the legalization of pot. I expect pot to be legal in Iowa shortly.

I'm just a dude who's trying to put it together.

i know, but a friend of mine just came from vancouver and he said that pot is legal there.. I dont know if its true or not. But if it is, why dont people in the US just cross the border more often? haha.

Its not legal

but the cops look the other way. Its not legal in the Netherlands either. Like when the dude delivers weed to the coffee shops he’s carrying way more than the legal amount. But the cops look the other way.

Well same here

but so the fuck is OxyContin, by that definition. I want to drop in to my local gas station and pick up a carton of Joints in my lifetime.

Think speeding ticket.

Back in 05 it was ruled that since there was no legal way for people needing medical cannabis to access it, cannabis was decriminalized, since it was deemed a violation of rights to deny medicine. That loophole has been closed.

Right now its a gray zone as far as legality goes. According to Wikipedia it is semi-legal to posess <30g of cannibis of <1g of hash. If you get caught, its just a max $1000 fine. It is highly illegal to posess for the purpose of trafficking, that gets real jail time.

I know from experience that as long as you stay on your own property and smoke its tolerated here in Southern Ontario. Keep it indoors or in your back yard, don’t bother anyone and you should be fine.

So who wants to go to Canada now?

by Ubernoober on Jan 7, 2009 11:04 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think it's ludicrous that pot is illegal anywhere.

I’ve never smoked in my life (serious), but I have no logical comprehension as to why it’s disallowed and alcohol and tobacco are allowed. (I’m not naive, I understand it has to do with entrenched industrial entities, partly owing to an historic cultural identification with said products. My point is that there isn’t a legitimate logical reason why it should be denied to the public).

No logical reason.

Haven’t you seen Reefer Madness! It causes black men to rape white women. That’s a documented fact!

But yeah, more comments about all that stuff I wrote before the last paragraph.

Its original goal is absolutely laudable

It was at a time when a school receiving federal funding could essentially say ‘cooties stink’ and ban women from joining. But it didn’t mention athletics for a reason, and nobody in 1972 could possibly have imagined billion dollar college football TV contracts. The interpretations have bastardized the original intent.
