Quote of the Day: Mark Coleman Talks Mauricio "Shogun" Rua
Adam Wagner (MMAmania.com): This fight is a rematch from PRIDE 31, where you obviously got the TKO victory, and Rua got the elbow injury. Does that make this fight mean anything more to you, the fact that there’s a history there, some unfinished business?
Mark Coleman: No, I think because we’ve already fought once, and “Shogun” has decided to make the fight personal, and everything involved in the whole situation definitely makes it a little more important to me. It’s not personal to me … Well, because he’s made it personal, I’ve had to make it personal. But really, he’s just another opponent - a very good one at that. But I just need to win this fight to keep my career going.

If you haven't seen "The Smashing Machine"...
Check it out. It’s about Mark Kerr, but you get to learn a lot about Coleman as well. You can see how much even top fighters struggled financially just a few years ago. He’s talking about keeping his career moving, but I think he really means “getting one more pay check”.

I’m sorry, but did I miss Coleman being an addict?

I heard an Interview with Coleman on Tagg Radio yesterday and he said he’s about 220 now and making weight wasn’t going to be an issue, but I still wonder if Coleman is going to get injured leading up to the fight sort of like Ken Shamrock did for the Kimbo fight.
mini Coleman looks like Frank Trigg
but the rematch aspect from that infamous Pride outcome makes it slightly more interesting to see an old man get pummeled into submission.

I agree with the outcome
you predict, but one thing is for sure-Coleman is one tough mother fucker! His pace & fierceness always made for good fights.
not all bad
Hendo vs. Franklin and Lytle vs. Irish Hand Grenade should be good.

Also, it’s a European event, which means 250k buys would be on the good side.
Or, you know, about three times the number of buys Affliction: Day of Reckoning will do.

The Afflcition card looks much more appealing though and yes, one would assume a startup promotion to do less PPV buys than an established company even if that event blows.

UFC 1 did more buys than Affliction: Banned.
That did not occur to me until the other day, but that’s both hilarious and disappointing.

And to think that the fighters or even the UFC was largely an unknown entity back then..
lbk – I’m guessing they had pre-WWE Shamrock..
Yeah. I would say to be a sucess that they would have to beat UFC 2’s buyrate since it’s there second show. So I looked that up and that is 300K. They have no chance at that
I was thinking of the same thing. That they’ll get their pass for their first show and try to follow the UFC trending of PPV buys as a template for their passing rate (as a measure of success). But that’s too steep. There’s no way in hell that they’ll get that much.
But then, these are both at different time periods. UFC 1 was the only show at that time and Banned had to compete with the UFC juggernaut.
I wonder how much reliable is the comparison between the two?
Yeah, one was creating an industry, the other trying to siphon off of it.

I’m not sure you know what an aborted fetus looks like if you think a 220lbs. ripped up dude looks like one.

Of course its f**king personal
He pushed the ref aside when he called the match due to the broken arm, stomped Wandy’s face when he was on the ground and acted like a hulked-up steroid superhero celebrating his “win”. If I was Shogun I’d want to smash him as well.
I think Coleman is a reasonable underdog pick here. Lets face it, Shogun isn’t the same fighter in the UFC octagon as he was in the Pride ring…no huge stomps, no soccer kicks. The cage favors Coleman’s wrestling and ground and pound, and you have to wonder how good Shogun’s takedown defense will be coming off of a serious knee injury. If Coleman makes weight, it’s gonna be competitive.
