What if...Kimbo Slice Fought Ken Shamrock?

2796636597_199b3b05b1_medium

While I've never been a huge comic book fan, I've always really enjoyed the alternate arcs and universes of the traditional superhero stories.  I've especially enjoyed Marvel's "What if..." stories.  It never fails to make me reflect on life and how different life would be if certain events had transpired differently.

So...what if Kimbo Slice had fought Ken Shamrock?

October 20th, 2008

EliteXC announced today it would be closing its doors after less than two years in operation.  Director Gary Shaw officially released all fighters from their contracts.

Problems began after the now infamous October 4th card.  The night began well with a fantastic performance from Gina Carano and an exciting rematch between champion Robbie Lawler and Scott Smith.  Things then took a turn for the worse in the main event.

Ken Shamrock, winless in his previous five fights, looked visibly intimated from the moment he stepped in the cage.  At the sound of the bell, Shamrock cautiously stepped forward as opponent Kimbo Slice took the center of the ring.  After a brief exchange, Slice landed a left hand that would change the landscape of MMA.

The shot staggered Shamrock back into the fence.  The Miami native smelled blood and rushed in to finish.  Shamrock did nothing but cover up while Slice unloaded a barrage of hooks and uppercuts.  After a devastating left to the body, Shamrock crumpled to the mat.  Referee Dan Miragliotta, caught out of position during the melee, allowed ten seconds of more punishment before stepping in.

It only took a few moments before those in attendance sense something was wrong.  Shamrock lay motionless against the fence while ringside doctors looked at him.  After a tense fifteen minutes, the "World's Most Dangerous Man" was carried off on a stretcher.

In the two weeks following the bout, the sport has been put to the test by the mainstream media and politicians.  Angry mothers called local CBS affiliates complaining about the incident.  Dana White, when asked for comment, said, "I've been building this sport for ten years, and these [expletive] [expletive] it up in ten minutes."

Shamrock, in a coma since the fight, has been given an optimistic outlook by doctors.

Yeah because having fights on CBS on Saturday nights wasn’t a good thing was it.

So long as it was EliteXC it wasn’t.

Having Kimbo Slice vs James Thompson as the most viewed MMA fight of all time isn’t a good thing in my opinion (especially with that bloody ear pop). I just don’t think the public is ready for MMA on primetime TV.

by Pandanus on Jan 6, 2009 11:16 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I get what you’re saying about the public, but those who are turned off by James Thompson’s ear popping and the sight of the blood will never be fans of the sport.
Also if CBS didn’t think that MMA had a place in Primetime they would’ve never made a deal to televise it.

by tylerdurden1 on Jan 6, 2009 11:48 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It just wasn’t the right show or promotion. Promoting Kimbo as the ‘Street Brawler’ fighting in a cage, having basically strippers in between fights just enhanced this Untrained, Brutal, Illegal and dare I say Human Cockfighting stereotype about the sport.

Alot of people still have ill feelings about boxing on primetime TV.

lol. I forgot about that I’ve seen it before.
Listen I know I am in the minority on this site about this but I enjoyed a lot of the shows that EliteXC put on and wish they were still around.

And even though they’re gone I hope CBS gets another promotion on to televise fights I thought Frank Shamrock was good as a color commentator and even though he was a little over the top at times I liked Gus Johnson as a play by play man.

by tylerdurden1 on Jan 7, 2009 12:12 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Hey I liked Shamrock too, there were some good fights on the cards. I just hated that alot of great talent was shadowed by Kimbo’s Youtube fame. Especially after the questionable ref stoppage in the Kimbo-Thompson fight.

After watching it, as a production on a whole it left a sour taste in my mouth.

MMA is a sport you really have to package carefully and the right way to get to that “mainstream” crowd.

Even people that were horrified by that knew it was his corners fault

I talked to people that knew nothing about MMA that were like… Why didn’t his corner drain that cauliflower ear before he went out?!? Me: “Because they were completely retarded” And then it all made sense and they understood it was an EXTREMELY rare occurance

Ken Shamrock submits Kimbo. The next CBS show is headlined by Frank Shamrock vs Ken Shamrock in one of the most watched fights of all time. Frank plays with Ken for a bit but eventually beats him convincingly and becomes the new face of Elite XC.

Ken Shamrock beats Kimbo, and goes on to reboot his career, eventually holding the UFC MW, LHW and HW belts in the greatest comeback in history.

The UFC would now resemble something to a XArm competition, and MMA would be a brutal and foreign sport to us Americans.

Most of the time it would go unnoticed in the mainstream, other than the occasional “and now a clip from Japan… It’s called Pride fighting, a brutal and bizarre sport from the land of the rising sun” on World’s Wildest Videos.

(I actually first saw Pride on one of those shows, and the host said something very similar. I didn’t realize it was MMA till after I had started watching the UFC and heard of Pride again.)

This post is nonsense…

If this happened, Dana’s quote would have way more than 2 expletives.

Haha, very true.

I’m not going to lie, these “what if” posts are the worst thing ever.

by jbotter on Jan 6, 2009 11:15 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Why? I think it’s fun to speculate, and they take me only 30sec to read, so it’s not like they’re huge time investments.

“I’m not going to lie, these "what if" posts are the worst thing ever.”

100% Agreed. It’s just dumb. Especially this one, sorry Fagan. =/

Totally disagree

I found this very entertaining and loved the touches about Dan M. not stepping in and Dana cursing. These posts are great thought experiments and a window into an alternate world.

Then again, I was always a fan of the What If? comic book too.

I personally don’t think its funny to joke about a guy being beaten into a coma even if it is Ken Shamrock. It is something that has happened to fighters for real and i assure you that their families found nothing humorous or funny about it. I have enjoyed most everything i have read by Mike Fagan but in my opinion this is in bad taste.

I understand your sentiment, but I don’t believe Fagan was trying to be funny or to mock Shamrock. I think he’s taking a moment to reflect on what could have been. As you point out, it’s a nightmare that might very well come true in the MMA world, so it’s worth contemplating the possibility.

This wasn’t a “funny” post – it’s just speculative. He wasn’t trying to make a joke.

Yeah, this definitely wasn’t supposed to be funny at all. Well, the Mirgaliotta part is, but whatever.

It wouldn’t make sense for there to be extreme public backlash without a serious injury to a participant, imo. I tried to lessen the severity with the “doctors are optimistic” part.

by Mike Fagan on Jan 7, 2009 1:57 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

This was a very real possibility

A lot of people talked about Ken’s age and health leading up to this match. It’s an important thing to consider with more old school fighters coming back (Coleman vs. Shogun comes to mind). I for one am glad Mike Fagan played out this thought experiment and raised the issue before we have to deal with a REAL mma fighter being in a coma.

I want to see BJ Penn fight Kimbo. He’s got a nice jab, so he could probably put Slice’s lights out. Likewise, he’s got a head like a coconut and Kimbo couldn’t KO James Thompson.

Also, I’d love to see Aoki in a freak show fight against Kimbo. I can picture Kimbo running while Aoki butt scoots in hot pursuit.

by Jahbulon on Jan 7, 2009 12:09 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Is Kimbo going to actually compete again or what?

by Pandanus on Jan 7, 2009 12:12 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It has a lot to do with what happens with the EliteXC contracts, and to see how long some guys are tied up for.

Kimbo didn’t make that appearance in Japan at K-1 for no reason. He’d be popular in Japan.

I can see a Kimbo vs. Bob Sapp fight being a big deal for K-1 or Dream.

This post is unrealistic in the fact that I do not believe I have ever seen slice throw an uppercut!

by Rob J Nathan on Jan 7, 2009 6:02 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

he threw and landed at least one upper cut followed by a cross hook against Thompson.

my bad

i thought it was a joke at first and then i replied anyway. then i remembered all the stupid Kimbo you tube fights in which he throws upper cuts all the time and realized your comment had to be a joke. my bad. as a side note: i sure wish we could edit or maybe even completely delete our own posts. i understand proof reading and accountability but sometimes i really wish we had these features available to us.
