Quote of the Day: Randy Couture Talks Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir Rematch

"I think that kind of depends on Lesnar and how much he’s learned and is able to keep the fight where he wants to keep it and uses his advantage, which is his size, strength, and length...That’s the question. That’s why everyone wants to see the fight again. Can Mir take him down and catch him in another submission? It’s hard to say. I can’t make a choice right now."

One thing Mir certainly cannot do is take Lesnar down. Can he pull guard or bait Lesnar into taking him down, in order to get the fight into his realm? Quite possibly.
I’d imagine Brock has a much better gameplan this time around, much more skill, and will be octagon seasoned, which is bad news for Mir.

But if Mir's striking continues to improve
he might be able to get the better of Lesnar on the feet. Doesn’t seem likely, but its something I’d be working on if I were him.

If Lesnar’s striking continues to improve at the pace it has thus far, he’s going to kill Mir on the feet as well. Lesnar has knocked down his opponent in all 3 UFC bouts, and he was doing very well on the feet against Couture.
Mir looked very good against Nog, but to be honest, Nog was basically a stationary punching bag that night. Brock won’t just stand there.

Nog was actually worse than a stationary punching bag when he fought Mir, because he leaned back and fell away from the lead uppercut, opening himself up to pretty much any attack Mir chose to unleash.
Lesnar will not lean back. He’ll stick his nose in there and fire back, and I don’t think anyone will suggest that Mir’s power is superior to Brock’s. That cannonball right hand can drop anyone, and he even displayed a serviceable left hook against Couture.

Good points regarding Lesnar’s striking. He’s also proven he can take a clean shot and not be phased or taken out of his game. Lesnar’s striking has gotten actually very solid in a short amount of time. He keeps it basic, but that’s good enough when you have great power and a long reach.

Nate,
what about that line about Randy’s new training partner Brock Lesnar? Any word on this?

per the Sherdog article I linked, Lesnar is heading to Xtreme Couture to do some training in advance of the fight.

Someone draw Mir a map to New Mexico, and hurry!

Oh shit!
Randy basically wrote the book on how to win with Brock’s skillset.

Word. If Lesnar is actually training with Randy, rather than just making PR appearances at Xtreme Couture, it’s a serious problem for the rest of the division.
Look at what Brock’s been able to accomplish all by his lonesome…training with one of the best HW fighters of all time is almost unfair.

training with sherk and greg nelson, doesnt actually qualify brock to be ‘lonesome’.. That is also a good camp. Greg nelson is a good trainer and sherk has the same qualities as brock. (minus the trex boxing)

lesnar was winning the first fight made a rookie mistake and got caught. i dont think he will make the same mistake twice. if he stays smart and level headed during the fight i dont think there is a fighter in the world including Fedor who can beat him.

Did I miss something?
Is Brock @ Xtreme Couture?

If this fight does hit the ground
I bet Lesnar gets up quickly like Mir did against Nog. With Lesnar’s reach & power I do not see Mir winning the standup battle as easily as he did against Nog.

Don’t be surprised to see Brock Lesnar and Randy Couture back in the cage together this year.
This time they’ll be training partners, though.

HAHAHA little nicky? Brock at Xtreme Couture training with some of the best fighters in the sport? Bad News for the other heavy weights.

Brock wont be taking Mir down until they are very sweaty and slippery and tired.

I love your tenacity, subo.
For one, it makes me feel less like the chairman and more like the co-chairman of the BLNHC (Brock Lesnar Nut Hugger Club).

Considering how Wand and Forrest did at the last ppv, i’d hold off on crowning Lesnar undisputed champion for now. I’m honestly very excited about seeing Mir shutting up alot of his haters once again, hopefully Brock decides to tap and not see how far his arm bends once Frank gets a hold of it.

mm hmm..
even if wand and forrest lost.. That doesnt mean brock wont learn more in this camp compared to his old one..
and dont get me wrong, his old camp is good too, but the training in extreme couture will surely let him learn new things..
