From weoweoweo:

lyoto’s learning some english!
..at least he’s doing something to market himself better.. the way they showed lyoto here was really good, i guess the UFC better start the hype train or else they’d soon have their marquee belt being held by a fighter the casuals dont like/know.

From Pandanus:

I’m surprised the UFC aren’t pushing him as the Karate fighter more.

The GSP-

“I’m going to make a story” line was pretty good as well. Not up there with his “he beat me squarely fairly” line, but still funny.

was it “a story” or “his-tory” ?

lol

guess my canadian-american translator must be on the fritz! It was a squarely fairly mistake

Its funny to hear BJ

Say “talk is cheap” since thats all he’s doing. Can’t wait till GSP smashes him, again.

by xFenixKnightx on Jan 6, 2009 11:01 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

lol,

agree about BJ being a hypocrite but saying GSP smashed him the first time? Come on. I am big fans of both of these guys, but you could not watch that fight & say GSP won convincingly much less smashed him.

by dnevil001 on Jan 6, 2009 11:06 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

k

*Can’t wait till GSP smashes beats him, again. :P

Seriously though, I think GSP has elevated his game and evolved more and BJ will be owned.

It should be a great fight

regardless of who wins. I really do not have a pick in this fight. I like both fighters too much to go against the other one. Just hoping for a freaking war

by dnevil001 on Jan 6, 2009 11:31 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I find it hard to believe anyone can like BOTH GSP and BJ since both are complete opposites as far as attitude is concerned. GSP is ever-humble, gracious if you will….BJ on the other hand is an arrogant tool.

I hope and I pray that GSP not only beats BJ but does so in brutal fashion.

by cauliflower_ears on Jan 6, 2009 11:17 AM EST reply actions   1 recs

Sure you can.

I like GSP for all of those reasons that you stated, but I still like BJ for his talent and ability. Not saying I think that he is as good a person as GSP, but still respect him as a fighter.

by dnevil001 on Jan 6, 2009 11:32 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Why not

This isn’t a miss congeniality contest.

by cyph on Jan 6, 2009 11:36 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, Penn can be arrogant, but I like both him and GSP. There’s no reason why someone can’t like both fighters. I like GSP because he is humble, and I like Penn because he is arrogant. It’s the same reason why I like a variety of beers. I like lagers for their specific properties, as well as dark beers for theirs. I don’t think it’s ever an either/or situation with fighters. At least not for me.

by pud333 on Jan 6, 2009 12:07 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

I like to watch fights and they are both bad ass fighters. That is why I like them both. I hate that fake humble act anyways.

If Fitch reminded GSP of the Terminator, he’s gonna think I’m God

As much as I like Penn, I don’t believe he has the tenacity that Fitch has. Regardless, the guy can sell a fight and despite my reservations about weight class hopping, I am looking forward to this one.

by pud333 on Jan 6, 2009 12:02 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

You do not think that Penn

has the tenacity that Fitch has? If nothing else, BJ is all tenacity. He does talk a lot but you cannot say that he does not bring it in fights, especially recently.

by dnevil001 on Jan 6, 2009 12:06 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Nope, Penn doesn’t have Fitch’s tenacity. Penn is great as a front runner. He’s unbeatable at the beginning. When guys don’t back down from him or can take his shots, weather the storm, and begin to tire him out or get their game going, he’s not the same terror.

Fitch was getting brutalized and never stopped trying to implement his game. He wasn’t succeeding in the least, but he never relented during a 5 round beating.

by Hardcharger on Jan 6, 2009 12:58 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I can kinda see what you’re saying but not really. Fitch should not have even been in the cage with St. Pierre – all he did was take a beating – he did not even hurt St. Pierre one bit. What was his gameplan? I’d rather see someone blow their wad trying their best to finish their opponent, than watch a guy basically take a beating for five rounds.

Your post is non-sensical. Fitch was the consensus #2 WW in the world. He’d clearly earned his shot at GSP’s title. GSP was just so good that he outclassed him.

What was Fitch’s gameplan? You’d have to ask his camp for the official answer, but it appeared that he wanted to mix it up in the standup, because he mistakenly (like many fans) thought that GSP had a weak chin and/or was gunshy. Fitch also attempted to take GSP down, but like pretty much anyone else, those attempts were futile. On his back, Fitch tried to use his BJJ black belt to neutralize GSP and scramble to his feet, but he got battered there as well.

You’re creating a false dichotomy. Gassing out vs. taking a 5 round beating aren’t the only 2 options when fighting GSP, even though it may appear that way. If Fitch got another shot, maybe he could make the fight closer. Either way, he showed a tencacity that’s rarely been matched in the UFC, and he never gassed in a high paced 5 round fight.

"If Fitch got another shot, maybe he could make the fight closer."

HA!! Fitch has absolutely no answer for anything GSP gave him other than not giving up. And while that is commendable on his part, it does lend itself to him being better next time.

Enough Penn, Enough hype

I wish Penn would just shut up. UFC practically invented the LW Division to give him title. He beat Pulver (no kudos), Stevenson (barely kudos) and Sherk . . . who if you remember correctly was an average WW who never would of had a shot at Penn w/out the LW division.

2 years later after a fairly forgettable fight I’m suppose to get excited because Penn has jewelry dangling around his waist and he beat 3 guys he would have beaten before the first GSP fight? Now I have to listen to Penn talk like he is the fight master of the universe.

This fight is so overbilled. It’s not between two champions! It’s still BJ Penn outside looking in at the WW belt.

I disagree on the basis that Penn has fought elite competition in many weight classes. BJ Penn has only lost to the best unlike GSP who lost badly to Serra.

It’s quite obvious that GSP’s loss to Serra was a fluke, and he avenged it easily.

Penn’s competition hasn’t been that elite. Pulver is a former champ, but he’s not even a title guy at 145, let alone 155. Stevenson is basically a gatekeeper at 155. Sherk is elite.

At WW, Penn has zero recent success.

by Hardcharger on Jan 6, 2009 4:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Penn’s lost to the elite competition he’s fought in other weight classes, with the exception of his original win over Hughes.

Penn’s list of victories absolutely pales in comparison to GSP’s list.

this is why i love this fight.. on a normal basis people would love GSP in his fight, and BJ on his.. But now they’re fighting, most fans are split between the two.. Most people who would generally agree on something are now opposed to each other. I also expect the UFC to increase the hype once 93 is over. so that would surely pump things up even more..

I personally, am rooting for BJ. via first round boxing clinic then leads up to a choke..

I love hearing Machida call Tito “Cheeto.” Hee!

I think Dana had the worst advice for Silva. Trying to chase down Machida is a losing strategy. I’d be focusing on counter-punching and backing away. Make him take the fight to you, make him hunt you down, and capitalize on some of the holes in Karate-style striking.
