The Crow Returns at UFC 97 to fight Ed Herman

Former UFC middleweight contender David Loiseau will return to the Octagon on April 18 when he faces The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 3 finalist Ed Herman at UFC 97 from The Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada according to Cageplay.com.

“Short Fuse” is hoping to not only spoil Loiseau’s homecoming, but to also snap a two-fight losing streak inside the cage. Herman came up on the losing end of a split-decision loss to Alan Belcher back in September and was choked out by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu phenom Demian Maia at last year’s UFC 83.

Loiseau recently defeated Solomon Hutcherson via fifth round technical knockout to earn the Xtreme MMA (XMMA) middleweight title at the Claude Robillard Sports Complex in Montreal, Canada.

It was a big (and gutsy) win for “The Crow” — his third straight since a controversial split-decision loss Jason Day earlier this year — because it got him once step closer to a UFC return.

The Canadian was at one time a top 185-pound title contender. In fact, he challenged then-champion Rich Franklin for his belt at UFC 58: “USA vs. Canada” in 2006, losing to “Ace” in a lopsided unanimous decision.

Loiseau had won four of five bouts inside the Octagon, including stoppages of Evan Tanner, Charles McCarthy and Mark Weir, to earn the opportunity.

After the loss to Franklin, however, Loiseau dropped three of his next four and fell of the radar. He was cut from the promotion rather abruptly after a unanimous decision loss to Mike Swick at UFC 63: “Hughes vs. Penn” in September 2006.

Loiseau — who trains with welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and Patrick Cote, among others — has been working hard ever since in smaller shows to be invited back.

It looks like his efforts have finally paid off, which is good news for him, the fans and the middleweight division.

Just wanted to say, I am EXTREMELY excited to see David back in the UFC.

Not a bad thing to have your UFC comeback in front of your hometown fans in Montreal either ;)

I always enjoyed Loiseau’s fights. I thought that he threw some of the wickedest elbows. Going into the Franklin fight, he had lost a little bit of his luster, but I was rooting for him to pull it off. After that fight, he wasn’t the same — ironically, Franklin was to Loiseau what Anderson Silva was to Franklin. Franklin has since rebounded so I hope for the best for Loiseau.

Being overrated is overrated.

Got to imagine Herman is out of UFC if he loses.

I’m just stunned that people are actually excited to see David Loiseau. I didn’t know we had so many French Canadians on this site.

Only French Canadians could possibly support a French Canadian fighter?

by klown on Jan 5, 2009 7:12 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No, it’s not that. It’s just that Loiseau isn’t a particularly distinguished fighter and hasn’t fared well against top competition.

You could almost describe Clay Guida the same way, except Loiseau isn’t nearly as entertaining a fighter as Guida.

I don’t have any problem with Loiseau coming back to the UFC, I’m just surprised people are excited about this move.

While he may not have the best track record against stiff competition, Loiseau’s spinning back kick-to-the-ribs KO of Charles McCarthy made me a fan for life.

Oh yeah!!!

The look on McCarthy’s face was priceless. The Bas says, “LIVER KICK!”

That be the moment I was referring to.

You know, I was thinking “I bet people like him because he can throw a spinning back kick.”

Nothing wrong with being flashy, but getting the best of Charles McCarthy isn’t something I particularly get worked up over. Of course, that’s coming from the guy whose favorite knockout is James Irvin’s flying knee to Terry Martin, and knocking Martin out isn’t exactly some rare occurrence either these days.

For me it wasn’t who he was knocking out, it was me walking down to the kitchen when my brother stopped me and said “wanna look at something crazy?”. Then theres Loiseau crumpling MacCarthy with a spinning back kick and following it up with a flying knee.

My brother had been given UFC 53 for christmas after he watched the smashing machine on tv. And thus interest in the sport was sparked.

My first introduction to MMA was via the Crow, so I always like to see him do well.

When I Think of Loiseau...

I always remember the GRAPEFRUIT that Rich Franklin left on his face. If anyone has a pic of that, please post.

Good to see that The Crow has worked his way back into the rotation...

But can he stay there? When he’s good, he’s good. When he’s bad, he looks slow, lethargic and generally out of shape. If he’s on his game, he could give us some decent fights, but I can’t see him beating Bisping, Hendo, W. Silva (if he drops to 185) or A. Silva. Maybe he’s going to have the TUF middleweights fed to him; sort of to thin the weak out of the herd, but I don’t see who else is there for him to fight.

by Cmad77 on Jan 6, 2009 5:38 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

He worked his way back into the rotation because the UFC has this event coming up in Montreal. That’s why he was brought back to the UFC now also the same reason that Jonathon Goulet wasn’t released was because of this event in Montreal. Otherwise neither guy would be in the UFC now.

Oh, I forgot,

Maybe they can put him in there with Okami. That might be pretty good…
