Sengoku 7: No Ran 2009 Complete Results
via Sherdog:
1 Hidetada Irie d. Minoru Kato TKO (Punches) 2 4:21
2 Maximo Blanco d. Seigo Inoue KO (Stomps) 1 0:38
3 Mu Bae Choi d. Dave Herman TKO (Punches) 2 2:22
4 Eiji Mitsuoka d. Sergey Golyaev Submission (Armbar) 1 4:22
5 Antonio Silva d. Yoshihiro Nakao TKO (Knee Injury) 1 1:42
6 Muhammed Lawal d. Yukiya Naito TKO (Punches) 1 3:54
7 Sanae Kikuta d. Hidehiko Yoshida Decision (Split) 3 5:00
8 Jorge Santiago d. Kazuo Misaki Technical Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) 5 3:26
9 Satoru Kitaoka d. Takanori Gomi Submission (Achilles Lock) 1 1:41
Couple of upsets there. Gomi has been on a downward slide for a while, but its still shocking to see him lose two in a row. It also hurts the promotion to have three of their biggest stars lose in one night: Gomi, Misaki, and Yoshida.
Jorge Santiago has made a strong case that he's a top 10 middleweight.
I wouldn't say that this loss derails Dave "Pee Wee" Herman's career, but I would say this is a roadbump. Maybe he'll start training more seriously now.
Is anyone that pumped about a Kitaoka vs Mitsuoka rematch?
Couple of fight videos in the full entry.

Now finally gomi will free fall through the rankings…

So What? Rankings are absolutely meaningless.

Yeah...
in some respects. But not when it comes to a freefall…which shows that there is a significant change in results/ability/whatever.

I understand what you’re saying, but my point was that people don’t need a top 10 list to tell them that Gomi isn’t the same force he was in Pride. You can see it in his performances and I don’t know exactly why. I mean I can’t see a clear erosion in his skills. I have to imagine that it must be mental more than anything else. Hopefully he can rebound I have always enjoyed watching him compete.

You say rankings are meaningless...
I think WAMMA would beg to differ with you…. lol

I agree
with that fully. The idea that it shouldn’t matter where someone is ranked when you can see the truth. I’m not sure what it is either. he doesn’t seem noticably more gunshy or anything. There is just that “something” he had when he was at the top that just isn’t there now…and I hate to be so vague and “x factor-ish” about it…but that’s all I can tell.

Herman looked pretty darn bad. He looked like he had no professional fights as opposed to thirteen. He needs some serious training and now.
by Rundownloser on Jan 4, 2009 11:37 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
i dunno...
he looked bad later in the fight…but he looked fine early and he was close to finishing the fight early. He seemed a bit shocked when it didn’t happen though and that just threw his game off badly

Oh absolutely...
I’m not defending him. Just saying that he didn’t look ALL bad. He needs to train for real if he wants to be worth a damn in the long run though.

But I thought he looked pretty awesome before he gassed really. The way he uses kicks to set up his punching attacks is totally unique among heavyweights. And if he actually trained with someone who could help him build on that — like Anderson Silva or Cung Le or Frank Mir’s coach — he’d be on his way.
I’m sure this fight will be a wake up call for him.

Was worth staying up for.
Santiago vs Misaki made it worth staying up late and watching a crappy feed… but it was free so I can’t complain. Misaki is a warrior, but there is a difference between being tough and being stupid… hopefully Santiago didn’t cause any permanent damage to him by not tapping.
I’m not the least bit surprised that Herman and Gomi lost, Herman’s fight was kinda funny considering Choi had to chase him around the ring to finish him. Antonio Silva looked impressive, too bad Kiss pulled a Cote.
I’m sorry, but King Mo didn’t look impressive at all. He’s definitely an entertainer but I think he needs to train a little bit more. His striking is pretty erratic, with proper training… he could be a beast.
Mitsuoka and Goyalev put on a good fight and I look forward to see Mitsuoka take on Kitaoka… I’ll stay up to see that fight.

You realize he's an olympic caliber wrestler
with about 8 months of proper striking training right?

Spot on. The fact that he’s knocking people out with that little experience is nothing short of remarkable. Yeah, there are still some holes- I think he could be in trouble if matched up against a good counter-puncher. But it seems likely he will continue to improve as well. I’m also impressed with his confidence and his aggression given his lack of experience. Most guys with that background would be all lay and pray if thrust into the spotlight this early in their career.

I think we’re at a point where holding Santiago’s loss to Leben against him is like holding Anderson Silva’s loss to Ryo Chonan against him. Yeah, he probably can’t beat Silva, but neither could Cote and neither can Leites. I’d say he has a better shot than either given his combination of size, striking power, and grappling ability. He hasn’t fought a single creme puff over this current stretch of wins, and that’s something I can’t say about Mousasi.

Gomi…oye ve.

Takanori, we hardly knew ye
Maybe now other orgs will take note and refuse to put a guy coming off of a loss into a title fight. Then again… maybe not.
And it’s not like the last guy Gomi lost to, Sergei, is a worldbeater – he lost, too.
Very impressed with both Herman and Silva. More HWs, I say, more!

I’m a big believer in potential, and I think his has yet to be tapped. Cardio is one of the easier things to fix, ultimately.

Out of curiosity, what leads you to believe that he has this untapped potential? To clarify: I’m not disagreeing with you, I’m just asking.

He very nearly KTFO’d Choi with a really nice kick/punch combination. I saw several things from Herman in this fight that made me think he’d make a very promising Light Heavy with more training and improved conditioning.
by Kid Nate on Jan 4, 2009 6:59 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Light heavy?? Dude is a legit Heavyweight.
by lbk on Jan 4, 2009 8:54 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
220 is not a great weight for a heavyweight. The guy is barely bigger than Chuck Liddell. Plus cutting weight will be good for his conditioning.
by Kid Nate on Jan 4, 2009 11:27 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I’m pretty sure Herman weighs in the 240’s for his fights.
by tylerdurden1 on Jan 4, 2009 11:49 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
unless he’s cutting weight for no reason I think he’s fighting at his announced weight.
by Kid Nate on Jan 5, 2009 8:56 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I’m not sure where 220 is coming from. According to Sherdog, Herman weighed in at 243- they’ve also got him listed at 6-5 on his fight finder page. As a LHW, his skillset wouldn’t make him much more than an average prospect, but as a heavyweight I still think he’s a guy you have to pay attention to. By all accounts his training methods are somewhat suspect. That obviously played a role here when he gassed after kicking Mu Bae’s ass in the first round. I was somewhat impressed that Mu Bae was able to survive. I think if you put Herman in a good training camp he wins that fight 9 out of 10 times.
by BilboMcFonzie on Jan 5, 2009 10:01 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Herman's
been right around that weight for this fight and all the EliteXC fights I can remember. I don’t know anything about him being 220 in for any fight.

"Jorge Santiago has made a strong case that he's a top 10 middleweight."
If you’re saying you had 10 middleweights in front of him before last night, you really have some explaining to do.
Silva, Okami, Santiago, Mousasi and Marquardt… and I suppose Franklin and Lawler depending on how you look at it. Those are the 185lbers that have unquestionably asserted themselves as the top in the division.

I would like to see Santiago beat someone inside the Octagon. He had some problems fighting UFC caliber middleweights. When you get KO’d be Belcher you have a ways to go before being considered top 10 material IMO.
by lbk on Jan 4, 2009 4:20 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Please, I don’t see how you can hold that over him any more than Anderson’s losses to Okami and Chonan. Belcher has been proved to be a middle of the road flake, and Leben a gatekeeper. Meanwhile Santiago has a monster streak of wins, virtually all of them against legit competition. He has clearly become a much better fighter and earned his place, I can’t say the same for Belcher.
by smoogy on Jan 4, 2009 4:43 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Also..
belcher is a dangerous guy when he is on. That loss is in the picture somewhere…but it’s much more faded than it was 6 months ago.

He’s beaten plenty of UFC caliber middleweights. He took Jeremy Horn out in just over 3 minutes, and last I checked, that guy is fighting Palhares in what is being touted as a significant/competitive bout (even if it isn’t) in a couple weeks for Zuffa. I really don’t see how him beating Jason Day or Rob Kimmons would do more for him than wins over Horn, Nakamura, Prangley, or Misaki did.

Compiling the metas is too much work for me to put together a personal list. Of all the lists we use, I pretty much like the metas or FightMatrix the best. They’ve got Jorge at #2 now. We’ll see where he is on the metas this week.

Dana may have finally realized
Saying anything negative about Japan really does nothing for the UFC if they wanna ever promote over there again.
