Varner vs Cerrone rematch in the works for Arizona

As reported by CBSsports.com contributer Gary Herman

WEC Vice President Peter Dropick not only confirmed the possible rematch, but said that Varner’s home state of Arizona is being considered as a potential destination.

“Arizona is definitely possible for the rematch,” Dropick told Herman. “Their rules have changed.”

Damn already?  Planning it so soon?

Varner is already on board for a second fight vs. Cerrone.

“Oh, hell yeah,” Varner is quoted in the report as responding when asked about possibly facing Cerrone again. “There will be a rematch. It was an honor to fight this guy. He’s still the number one contender. I can’t wait to fight him again.”

Could be a while though:

The scheduling of the rematch may not happen for an extended duration due to the fact that Varner broke a bone in his foot as well as the index metacarpal on his right hand.

Fortunately there doesn't seem to be any worry here about career ending injury so we can get this match on the books.

No career ending injuries?

“I broke my right index metacarpal, completely fractured.” “So I have to get pins put in it Thursday. Then I go next week to see my eye doctor to make sure my retina isn’t detached. And if it’s detached it could be a career-ending injury.”

Good.

That’s the way it ought to be. I’d rather the fight be here in Colorado, but whatever.

Cerrone by better takedown defense in the third.

Did Cerrone do the nipple tweak? Was that why he lost?

He did the SHIT out of it during the ref instructions.

He overtweaked in my opinion.

I would have preferred it if Varner fought the winner of Palaszewski/Cleat first.

Varner was very lucky to get out of that fight with the belt, he was on his way to being stopped by Cowboy he was gassed and looking for a way out and he found it. I personally can’t wait for the rematch because it’s going to be great to see him get what’s coming to him at the hands of Cerrone.

I love when peeps try and say that Cerrone was close to stopping Varner. Hilarious. Dud you not see Cerrone getting dominated for 20 minutes prior to that final round? I just don’t think he had nearly enough power to put Varner away in the first 4 rnds, let alone the 5th.

Did you not see Misaki vs Santiago

Misaki dominated Santiago more than Varner did Cerrone. ALOT MORE. What happened? Santiago RNC round 5

Gimme 1 Round!

So what? That doesn’t mean that Cerrone was close to stopping Varner.

Cerrone failed....

Though I argue that Cerrone won this fight by KO after kneeing Varner in the face as he was getting up for a failed take down, Cerrone did fail to execute an intelligent game plan. Seriously, did Cerrone think it would be a good idea to take right fist after right fist to the face without moving his head and allow take down after take down? Cerrone is a tough dude and he can take a punch, I get that, but in a fight scored by points and not toughness his plan was terribly flawed. I saw that he planned to catch Varner in a triangle from his back(almost did at the end of the 2nd) but Varner was ready for that as evidenced by Varner’s submission defense throughout the remainder of the fight. Hopefully Cerrone comes with a better plan to the rematch.

"Stop smiling you are about to be punched in the face !"
