UFC 94: Georges St. Pierre vs. BJ Penn - Live Results and Commentary

As with every major show we'll be here to bring you live results and commentary on UFC 94: St. Pierre vs. Penn. The real live blog will start with the beginning of the PPV broadcast so make sure to make Bloody Elbow your home for this event.
As always we have our one rule: NO SPOILERS! In the interest of not ruining anything from the undercard that may make the broadcast we ask that you do not discuss the results of the undercard in the comments until either the broadcast ends or the fight makes the air.
So again, join me for the show and share your thoughts as the event unfolds.
5 minutes to the start of the broadcast. Get ready!
The broadcast has started and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't about ready to jump out of my skin wanting the fights to start.
Nate Diaz vs. Clay Guida - Round 1 - Right hand lands for Guida early and he flurries to get the body lock but can't do anything with it. Uppercut lands for Diaz and Guida is doing a good job of keeping his hands up. Right/Left for Diaz now and he is starting to find his distance. Single leg attempt for from Guida but he has to give it up. Guida is most effective with his leg kicks right now but he is eating some straight punches. Diaz shoots and Guida reverses and ends up on top in the guard. Diaz gives his back up and stands up, avoiding a RNC attempt. Full Nelson by Guida and they're on the ground in side control but Diaz stands back up again. Big takedown by Guida and he throws a few shots before Diaz tries to maneuver up. Now Guida has his back standing again. Guida ended up stealing the round with the takedowns and ground work on my card. But I could see it going the other way. Guida 10-9. Round 2 - Hip toss attempt by Diaz is defended. Now it's long punches landing for Diaz again. They're clinched up against the cage now as Guida works for a takedown. Guida is working hard but Diaz is defending well so far. Finally Guida gets him down but they get back up quickly. Guida takes his back standing yet again, He isn't able to get the takedowns but he is controlling the fight pretty well not allowing Diaz any room to work on strikes. Trip takedown by Dias but Guida has his back, one knee to the body and Diaz stands back up. Takedown AGAIN and Diaz throws his legs up to get nothing. The round ends and I have to give it to Guida again. 10-9 Guida (20-18 total) Round 3 - Guida with a nice leg kick but he eats a jab. Right hook to the body by Diaz now. Big right hook by Diaz and Guida needs a takedown here. It's a very simple story here, Diaz wins the fight when they are at distance and Guida wins in close. Diaz is taking over now with big strikes...both punches and knees. Guida is ale to get ahold of the legs now and while he isn't getting the takedown he isn't eating punches. Clay takes Diaz's back off a trip attempt by Nick and they end up right back on the feet. 90 seconds to go. Single leg by Guida now and again Diaz stands back up. Another takedown and repeat the back to standing thing. 10-9 round for Diaz based on the early striking. 29-28 for Guida on the BloodyElbow scorecard. Offical Scorecards - 29-28 Diaz, 29-28 Guida, and 29-28 Guida. Clay Guida wins by Split Decision.
Karo Parisyan vs. Dong Hyun Kim - Round 1 - Kim eats a glancing right hand early but he gets a takedown quickly and is in Karo's guard. He lands a couple punches and Karo rolls and stands but Kim has his back standing. He's just riding Karo's back landing a couple punches. Karo is half spitting his mouthpiece out already and his mouth is open. His mouthpiece is now out. Kim is landing some punches and Karo is foced to stand back up. Back to the ground they go and now Kim goes ror an armbar but Karo rolls out and is now on top. Triangle looked deep but Karo slid out. They stand back up and Kim gets another takedown...he is straight manhandling Karo now. They stand back up and a right hook lands for Kim. 10-9 round that was close to 10-8 if Kim had done a bit more damage. Round 2 - High kick just misses for Kim. Three punch combo by Karo is blocked. Karo tries for a takedown and is spun against the cage. Scramble as Karo works for an armlock but neither guy gets position and they're back to standing. Karo's mouthpiece is out again. Beautiful judo throw by Karo and he is in side control now. Kim stands up without taking any damage. It's a better round for Parisyan but he has to do some damage here. Time out to throw Karo's mouthpice in and he is warned that he will lose a point if it comes out again. Right hand by Karo lands solidly. Right hand again for Karo. 10-9 round for Karo and it is tied on my scorecard. Round 3 - Takedown by Kim and Karo tries to push him away with an upkick but Kim was not up so Karo gets a warning. Kim with another takedown and he takes Karo's back but Karo is able to get out of it and they're standing with Karo's back against the cage. Karo is able to spin him and tries a jumping knee that misses. Single attempt by Karo but he isn't able to finish. Kim tries for a takedown which Karo avoids by grabbing the fence. They're still pressed against the fence and it really would be an appropriate time to separate them with a minute left in the fight. The round ends and I guess I give it to Kim...not an exciting fight. 10-9 Kim giving him the fight 29-28 on the BloodyElbow card. Official Scorecards - 29-28 Parisyan, 29-28 Kim, 29-28 Parisyan. Karo Parisyan wins by split decision.
Stephan Bonnar vs. Jon Jones - Round 1 - My Yahoo stream cut out for the first 30 seconds here. Jones tries for a takedown but lands a few knees to the body. Awesome takedown by Jones but Bonnar gets back up. High kick misses for Bonnar now. High kick lands to the chest of Jones and then a spinning back kick from Bonnar misses. Pressed against the cage and Jones with a takedown attempt but he takes Bonnar's back. Single leg attempt by Jones and he throws a spinning back fist that drops Bonnar but Stephan recovers and they're back to standing. Knee by Jones lands hard. Takedown by Jones and the round ends. 10-9 round for Jones and he looked much better than I expected here. Round 2 - Bonnar throws a few leg kicks early. Side kick by Jones, now a leg trip and he takes Bonnar's back. This doesn't look like a case of ring rust, i t just looks like Jones being a better fighter. Kick lands to the body for Bonnar but Jones takes him down off of it. Bonnar has him in half guard and really unable to get out from under Jones here. Knee to the chin as Bonnar stands back up. Right hand by Bonnar and he pushes Jones against the fence. Jones' breathing is getting heavy and he looks a bit slower here as pointed out by Rogan as I type it. Elbow/left hand combo for Jones and now Bonnar returns with sharp uppercuts. Elbow by Bonnar lands. Jones is gassing here and is watching the clock now. Big takedown by Jones as I call him gassed. Round ends and it was Jones 10-9 again. Round 3 - Jones is moving backward here early. Bonnar is now landing some sharp punching combos. Right uppercut lands for Bonnar now. Jones is very gassed here and Bonnar hurts him with a right hand. Jones is falling in now and isn't as explosive. Uppercut again for Bonnar. Right hand looked like it buckled Jones' knees briefly. Bonnar tries for an ill advised trip and Jones ends up on top. Triangle attempt for Bonnar but Jones gets out. They're standing again and time is running out for Stephan. Very impressive first round and a half for Jones but he needs to get that cardio up. Bonnar wins the third 10-9 putting the score at 29-28 for Jones. Official Scorecards - 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 all for Jon Jones. Jon Jones wins by unanimous decision. Very impressive showing for the youngster.
Lyoto Machida vs. Thiago Silva - Round 1 - Right hand lands for Machida as does a low kick. Jumping knee to the body now. Body kick lands hard for Machida now. Thiago is stalking and eating shots. Accidental groin shot with a knee from Machida and they stop the fight to allow Thiago to recover. They restart and Machida with a foot sweep takedown. But Lyoto stands back up and continues to circle. Right hand again by Machida. Knee to the body and a left hook puts Silva on his back. Machida is just sitting on top throwing elbows and now they're back to standing. Right hand again for Lyoto puts Silva on his back and he jumps to side control and then full mount. Back to standing they go after a scramble and time runs out. On the strength of 2 knockdowns and takin no punches that was a clear 10-8 round. WAIT! WiTH 2 SECONDS LEFT MACHIDA LANDS A TRIP TAKEDOWN AND A HUGE RIGHT HAND AND IT'S OVER! Yeah guys...real boring fighter this one is. Lyoto Machida wins by KO, Round 1.
BJ Penn vs. Georges St. Pierre for the UFC Welterweight Championship - It's here...and holy crap am I jacked up. Round 1 - Pen punches and GSP grabs a clinch quickly. Single leg attempt fails for GSP now. Single leg attempt again and again Penn fends it off. Double jab from GSP. Right hand for St. Pierre now. Single leg again and Penn hops on one leg to defend. Right hand for Penn now as they separate. Right hand to the temple by GSP and a jab to follow up. Right hand again by GSP and he won the striking battle in the first round. 10-9 GSP. Round 2 - Left hand for Penn now. Clinch against the cage again and the fans boo briefly. Right elbow lands for GSP. GSP with a takedown and Penn grabs mission control right away. Penn is working his legs up but St. Pierre keeps pushing forward and now allowing the legs to work. Huge right hand lands for GSP from the top and he passes to side control. Short left hands over and over from Knee to the midsection now and St. Pierre is absolutely dominating here on the ground. Penn is able to regain guard finally. GSP with some big shots to the head and body now from the top. Elbows now for St. Pierre and this is really close to a 10-8 round. Again GSP passes to side control but he eats some more elbows and is cut under the left eye. 10-8 round on my card and GSP is up 20-17. Penn got dominated in that round. Round 3 - Left hand for GSP now and Penn's nose is bloodied. GSP is dominating the boxing apsect, and tore BJ apart on the ground. Cling by GSP and he uses the single leg to take down and passes to half guard quickly. Big left to the body by Georges. Hammerfiss now from GSP and Penn gets to his feet which was very much needed. It's now Penn working for a single leg but GSP pulled out and pushes Penn back against the cage. Double leg and they're right back down. Right elbow lands hard again. Left hand lands hard and then a right to the body. Not as bad of a round for Penn as the second, but it certainly wasn't good. 10-9 GSP (30-26). Round 4 - Jab/low kick by GSP and he seems like he can do whatever he wants here. Now a single leg into half guard and then an easy pass to side control. Elbows now by GSP and this is one of the most dominant performances in a fight of this caliber I've ever seen. Both of Penn's arms are trapped and GSP is landing punches and elbows at will. GSP tries for the mount but gets pulled to half guard but pulls his leg back out like it's nothing. GSP is just battering Penn from side control here. Just an absolute barage from GSP here and Penn has not one single answer here. 10-8 round again and it's 40-34 on my card. Round 5 - THERE WILL NOT BE A ROUND 5. Herb Dean stops the fight and Georges St. Pierre pulled off one of the most amazing performances I've ever seen. BJ Penn is one of the best fighters in the history of this sport and he was dominated in EVERY aspect of this fight. Georges St. Pierre wins by TKO (Corner Stoppage), round 4.

I’m sure maple syrup is still #1 – right, Fagan?
by Derek Suboticki on Jan 31, 2009 7:24 PM EST up reply actions
Maple Syrup is not #1, GSP is
A way to consume an entire bottle of maple syrup and not die is to make tarte au sucre. Back when I was little we used to make maple syrup from the trees in the back lot, but it always had bits of twigs and bugs floating in it.
Quebec does make the best damn maple syrup in the world, but it mostly gets exported to other syrup deprived areas.

I got a question…I recently axed my cable company because they sucked, so I ordered the fight online with Yahoo…
Has anyone here ever ordered the fight through Yahoo? I’m kinda sketchy about the stream, and am just looking for some feedback. I have a 5mbps conection and I’m running on a Mac so my system can handle heavy feeds.
Thanks Guys!

The streams are honestly pretty great...
BUT you need to use IE and not firefox. That will allow you to do a legitimate full screen. The full screen attempt if you use firefox remains in a window. The picture also seems to look clearer in IE for some reason. Not that I’m ever a big fan of suggesting using IE but in this case…yeah, do it.

I’ve never had problems with buffering or anything on Yahoo during a live event. Their highest quality is 1200kbps.
I’m watching UFC 93 on a 32" RCA HDTV (my brother’s) through Yahoo and it looks about as good as you could ask for a stream.

Can’t wait to see Lyoto get down tonight, and BJ/GSP is a no-brainer, but is it just me that wants to see Nate get clubbed by that caveman-looking mofo? Are you guys throwing a UFC party? We’re going to have at least 20 people, half are casuals, 1/4 is hardcore, the other are newbies.
Uh…half of the people at our party are girls (that’s the casual part). And no, you don’t need women to have a party.
Well, I guess we’re having a party then. So you can come over Pandanus. Just leave the anus at home.

MACHIDA > ANDESON SILVA
I wonder how many times Joe Rogan is going to say “evasive” tonight while Machida is fighting.
This isn’t political, he has a talk show now so I’m evaluating his performance as a TV personality (and I’m forcing myself to watch it): Mike Huckabee is an idiot.

Do you think Dana White will ever root harder against a fighter than he will be against Machida tonight?
Dana would rather give Tito a title shot instead of Machida. The idea of Machida as champion seems to be his worst nightmare.

Dana likes Machida
He was on Brazilian TV and stated he’s a huge Machida fan and he has the potential to be the top P4P fighter in the world. Beating Cheeto gave him alot of extra points.

Like Brent, I would have scored 3 for Diaz based on striking, but Guida did finish strong. One was all Guida, and 2 was closer, but Guida seemed to be in better position most of the round.
by Cannon Jacques on Jan 31, 2009 10:40 PM EST up reply actions
That was not fighting. I love Guida, but holding onto your opponent with both hands for 10 minutes is not dominance or damage, and it was barely octagon control.
How about slamming him, repeatedly taking his back, trying to submit with a nasty nelson? I think they might count.
he took his back and did nothing
he slammed him and did nothing
did guida land a single punch? he saw one knee and that is it.
Does he have to land a punch?
He slammed him, he took his back, he tried to submit him.
Diaz threw some punches that did nothing, and then spent 4 minutes of each round trying to survive.
I wanna see the fightmetric analysis when it comes out.
My pro-Diaz view might be clouding my view on this. Regardless, it wasn’t very good TV.

Any fool can put together a main event.
It’s the everything else that has been suffering on the UFC cards lately. Why would you put two judokas together? What do you think will happen? Lots of clinching maybe, yes? Apparently that thought doesn’t run through Joe Silva’s head.

This is sweet after that crap third round of the last fight. How is it possible that Bonnar is still standing?
yeah, thats what I was thinking. Obviously not intentional though.

Good point. I think it’s often overlooked how important learning English really is. Even just the attempt at speaking English to thank your fans is a huge PR boost.
i think that’s one of Anderson Silva’s biggest reasons he can’t draw ppv numbers, he’s never been much for learning english, recently he’s tried a bit harder. It’s hard to connect to fans through an interpreter

To be successful in the UFC these days, you must train the way GSP has shown is possible. BJ, cocky as he is, changed very little about his training.

Smartass answer for FTW!
Whatever the fight was important, and BJ bit more than he could chew (but nobody knew it be). He started slow and never really put up the pace while GSP was all over him like guida over diaz, but with punches and elbows. The gap between the two was nothing like I expected. That was just the best performance against the worst, and that’s no coincidence, cause GSP executed the perfect gameplan.
I've said it several times...
that there are 2 ways a fight can be significant and I should have clarified earlier.
1) Before a fight starts (i.e. Penn/GSP II)
2) or because of what the fight causes in its wake (i.e. Bonnar/Griffin)
This fits into #1 easily.
Contributing Editor - BloodyElbow.com - SBNation's mixed martial arts headquarters.
by Brent Brookhouse on Feb 1, 2009 2:01 AM EST up reply actions
of course the fight was significant. i just question the historical nature of that significance. i do not believe that five or tens years from now MMA fans will look back on this fight, where GSP dominated Penn for the 2nd time, as a turning point, milestone or culmination of our sport. those moments usually thrust their significance on us not vice versa.
Only after he beats Spider

I’m a guy who’s happy to see the good guy win.
Thanks
Like I said, perfect gameplan, to the dude saying fedor > GSP, fedor is amazing and all, but his performance against a lesser competion (the pitbull is on no one P4P list) doesn’t even compare to what we saw tonight. Until fedor put his shit together (even his corner recognizes he wasn’t impressive), GSP is my #1 P4P.
GSP beat up a Lightweight
Fedor at least defeated someone in his own class. In fact, Arlovski was the larger, stronger fighter with the larger reach and speed advantage. Yet Fedor knocked him out in one round.
Fedor #1. Silva #2. GSP #3
???
Did you just watch this fight? GSP should be the clear cut #1. He just dominated another top 5 p4p fighter. When has fedor or Silva ever done that?
LT 4 MVP
If GSP beats Anderson Silva...
… It would then be time to raise his standing on the PFP list.

Anderson Silva – GSP…that’s the fight that needs to be made

Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
LOL
Yeh I pretty much agree with this….
He would have a decent chance at beating Alves if they fought again.
Who are the top 5 UFC WWs? The metarankings say…
1. GSP
2. Alves
3. Fitch
4. Koscheck
5. Jake Shields (not UFC)
6. Diego Sanchez (gone to 15%)
7. Matt Hughes (never going to challenge for belt again)
8. Carlos Condit
9. Matt Serra (never going to challenge for belt again)
10. Karo Parisyan (pretty crap…would get beat down by any of the top four easily)
11. Mike Swick
The only reason I included Mike Swick is because Swick and Carlos Condit (who will fight at UFN 18) are the only two possible challengers for the belt after Alves. Jon Fitch can have another shot and Josh Koscheck can have another shot but who honestly really wants to see those fights again.
Joe Silva better step up the matchmaking – Swick needs to fight an overrated Karo and Fitch/Koscheck needs to fight Carlos Condit. Dustin Hazelett needs to bring it on with Fitch/Koscheck
Thinking about it – Silva’s matchmaking in the WW division sucks. Big problem with 3 of the top WW being from the same camp.
When BJ was walking out he didn’t seem to be himself. I hope all is well with BJ and his family. BJ seemed distracted – I can’t believe what happened tonight – I just knew that the fight was going to be a back and forth war.
"My job is a decision-making job, and as a result, I make a lot of decisions." --George W. Bush, The Decider, Lancaster, Pa., Oct. 3, 2007
I had to explain to my roommate who has never watched mma that Penn is a highly skilled fighter. THIS as he is watching GSP dominate.
...
When has Fedor or A. Silva beat another top 5 PfP in such a complete and dominating fashion? Anyone…ever? No. Logic then dictates that GSP IS the new PfP King.
Yeah...
Or Fedor/Cro Cop. I’m pretty sure (but not positive) that both CC and Nog were in the top 10 P4P at the time of their fighting Fedor. Still…it’s amazing for GSP to have dominated the way he did tonight.

Ridiculous
All the affliction wearing neanderthals who expected BJ Penn to dominate Georges St. Pierre need to re-evaluate how they study this sport. The days of the mouthy, disrespectful fighter is over. Guys who showcase class and respect are going to be the better fighter because those are traits of real champions. Make way for St Pierre and Machida. Throw Jake Shields in there as well. BJ Penn was out classed and out of his league. Great fighter but got DESTROYED. So glad my winnings covered the Pay Per View order. Any guesses how much UFC earned off this one?
Good point!
GSP showed that he was the better fighter AND the better person, which makes Penn a two time loser.
Before I get to GSP-BJ, let me say…
Lyoto Machida just tries to score points…he dosen’t have KO power…yeah. I had said tonight to look for Machida to finish, hard. I was very impressed, he’s not p4p yet, but he has to keep working, and it can be a reality.
Now let me take you guys to the main event…I was explaining to my girlfriend’s friend all the trash that BJ had been talking and how they are both very skilled fighters…the fight commences.
After round two I brought up how BJ was talking about GSP being a quitter, and I said and I quote…
“BJ Penn will not make it to the 5th round of this fight without quitting.”
I understand it was probably out of his hands, but dammit, I don’t care. lol GSP was very dominant, and showed an excellent gameplan. He dosen’t let the pressure get to his head, he knew he needed to fight to win, not fight to show off (Faber back elbow? I think all p4p should have learned from this.). I think GSP could have KO’ed Penn if it stayed standing…BJ’s boxing wasn’t there…BJ wasn’t there.
BJ Penn is a 155 lber, wether he likes it or not. GSP sent him back to his title tonight, hopefully humbled, and motivated. GSP will defeat Alves, then he will go to war with Silva, and my friends, that fight will determine who is the greatest p4p.
Great night of fights. period.
The title fight was simply BJ getting put in his place. He’s not strong enough to be best in class at 170. He’s a great 155er. Didn’t expect much different.
GSP frustrates me. He had side control for over 3 minutes and couldn’t finish. I actually thought he could have finished in the second round when he had side control with some more aggressive elbows. Dominate performance but he’s bigger so it should have been.
Finishing is a unique characteristic for a fighter and some are much better at it than others. It’s my favorite characteristic. Hard to practice but makes all the difference. If you have an advantageous position exploit it. Don’t let the opponent hang around and catch you with a lucky punch. Can’t wait to see Swick get a shot a St Pierre.
