Rumor: Affliction is DONE... (Updated: Atencio Denies)
Promoted from the Fanposts by Kid Nate. Please note that this news is unconfirmed but MMALogic has shown himself to be a credible inside source in the past.
Affliction MMA is Done.
Tom Atencio will be making an announcement soon.
A third show will probably happen to fulfill Affliction Entertainments larger contract obligations unless a deal with Zuffa can be arranged to offset some of the costs while Affliction pays off their contract obligations via "sponsorships"...
You could hear in Tom's voice after the event - the realization that:
Everyone is making money here (Trump, Golden Boy, the fighters, etc...) at the expense of Affliction losing millions.
With Affliction footing virtually the entire bill and after PPV distributor: Showtime and Promoter Golden Boy taking their cut - Affliction is left with less than $13 per PPV buy to cover expenses.
Making the initial estimate of 250,000 buys not even close to what will be needed to break even.
Update from Michael Rome: I have been digging at this story for the last 3 or 4 hours since I first heard it. I believe it to be true. A source at UFC informed that Lorenzo Fertitta was contacted today by Affliction looking for a "beneficial" way out, but it was only one source and it remains just a rumor.
Update 2: Tom Atencio was apparently on a Sirius show and denied the end of Affliction. He also denied ever being on the Tom Leykis show, which was a rumor posted elsewhere:
Tom Atencio denies all rumors of Affliction closing its doors. He denies even appearing on the Tom Leykis show or talking with the UFC.

I have no doubt that you know your stuff logic, which is why I tend to believe this. I am curious however, regarding the announcement, are you saying that you expect Atencio to come right out and announce that the 3rd show will be the final one?
To bad they didn’t go about this the proper way, I felt last weekend was a good show and a vast improvement over Banned.

He said on some radio station today they would be “taking a break” after Show 3 allegedly. It kind of sounds like the “bankruptcy” scenario put forth by some people. Hopefully someone like Loretta Hunt is digging into it.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jan 29, 2009 9:23 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yes
From what I’ve heard, it sounds more like someone is trying to pressurize the situation, rather than Affliction MMA just calling it quits.
by smoogy on Jan 29, 2009 9:27 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I think it’s both…
There’s a reason this will be coming out before the third show rather than waiting until after the third show. They really don’t want to do the third show with the way things are – so if there’s ever a time to put the pressure on it’s now.
It’s a throw the ball down the field and close your eyes type of situation… it’s better to throw than to hold onto the ball and wait for the time to run out sort of thing.

Source: Tom Leykis Show
Tom Atencio stopped by the studios here in California, and was quoted by saying that their third show will be the final show for Affliction, and quoted that they have put on nothing but great fights.
Quote:
“The third show will be it. We dived into the MMA buisness for a reason. To put on good fights. We have done nothing but that. The third show will be it for us. We are taking a break.” said Affliction VP Tom Atencio.

So, can we agree it’s the same gamble Station Casinos took in 2001? I honestly hope Affliction has the same success and all fans can watch high profile matches besides when the UFC allows us to. Local MMA will survive, but we need a high profile promotion besides UFC, IMO.

How is it an out? The news will still come out that Affliction doesn’t plan on continuing to promote MMA which is what I am saying.
Do you think if Golden Boy all of a sudden says: “wait a sec, we’ll go in with you 50-50” that they will think about it?
It’s not likely but this is the reason why he will be letting it out now rather than after the third show… in hopes of getting someone bite.

Zuffa can totally take this and run with it. Cut a deal where Affliction’s last show is actually a UFC PPV and they get some advertising room, Affliction gets one last kick in the ass, but by bending over and taking it, are back in the UFC’s good graces.
Not gonna happen, but would definately be nifty. Hopefully Wamma will be dying as well…fuckers.

a bit skeptical, but intrigued at the same time.
anyone know what kind of contracts they made with their fighters? if they do fold, will we see zombiexc 2.0, with a majority of the fighters hanging in limbo? i doubt it, since they’ve said all along that they were focusing on their first three events… but it would be brutal for the fighters involved if it went down like that.
and if any of the big ticket fighters DO transition to the ufc somehow, that’ll mean alot less money for an elitexc fighters, should they ever become available. as much as everyone would like to see every single premier fighter in the world, fighting under the ufc banner, it’s just not practical.
by woooburn on Jan 29, 2009 10:54 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I doubt that we see a ZombieXC situation. Affliction always seemed like they were much more concerned with fighters than Elite. Besides, they have sponsorship deals with all these fighters (and many more). If they screw over a bunch of fighters, they have pretty much severed their connection with the MMA scene.

Huh.
Well, I’m speechless. I mean, who saw this financially strong operation crumbling?
I’m going to lie down now. This stunning revelation has taken a lot out of me.
Also, the “initial estimate” of 250k buys is rich. If you do psychotropic drugs and write down nonsense you see while you’re tripping balls, it probably doesn’t count in real life.
What else? Oh, their shirts are the most poorly designed things I’ve seen this side of Alan Belcher’s Johnny Cash tattoo. I know I used that one before, but I like it, and I figure I’d better get my fill while anyone remember what Affliction was.
And now, in honor of Affliction’s demise, I’m going to take a large pile of money and have Donald Trump set it on fire, then I’ll take another large pile of money and invite Oscar De Lay Hoya over and have him flush it down the toilet while Shane Mosely fights at my neighbor’s house. Finally, just for funsies, I’ll let Tito Ortiz with his impressive grasp of the English language comment on the proceedings.
Still, here’s to hoping that ZUFFA signs Fedor and a couple two and three other of Affliction’s fighters to deals. Smart deals, I mean, not any of these “hey, we’ve got 90k sitting around, why don’t we hire Paul Buentello to beat up Fedor’s training partner?” kind of deals.

This comment has been brewing in you a while now. All obvious and great points. A masterpiece if you will. But what do you have to say about the fact that Affliction started a fighting org in order to feature there crappy shirts and the entertainment brand was to be a loss leader for the clothing. AND NOW they are talking about giving up a % of a profitable business so they don’t go under. It is ripe for more satire.

So what?
Why is everyone gettins so pissed at mmalogic? If he is wrong he’s wrong, but I doubt he would post something that has absolutely no truth to it and risk what credibility he has if he didn’t at least believe it to be true. Last week Chris Mortensen reported the Chiefs had Mike Shanahan all but signed, then an hour later he said they were just in talks, now a week later he hasn’t said another word about it and nobody is burning him at the stake, and he was reporting that story as fact. Logic throws up a fanpost clearly labeleld “Rumor” and everybody gets their panties in a wad. Chill out guys.

Some would construe that to be an insult. Haha
by Blackout612 on Jan 29, 2009 11:52 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Mort is the worst in the business, a weasel…..Schefter is correct 98% of the time when he “breaks” something, Jay Glazer right there about 95% of the time…Mort is about 25% of the time correct, and what ESPN does anyways is once he makes up a story like usual, they have Clayton or Werder report the opposite, then whichever plays out (if mort guessed correct or if werder saying the opposite holds true) they act like “ESPN” had the info all along…
true football fans notice this all the time, especially been bad the past 3 or so years, next time Mort has “breaking” news on ESPN, wait two or so minutes, turn to NFL network and look for Adam Schefter to cut into whatever program is on and say “people are saying this, it won’t happen and isn’t true” then goto foxsports.com and see Glazer saying it also isn’t true.
Mort once said Eli Manning would be out a month, guaranteed it. Schefter said Eli wouldn’t miss a game. That was last season, who was correct?
Mort says Shanahan WILL be the next Chiefs coach, 2 minutes later Schefter and Glazer are both saying he WON’T be the Chiefs coach and its a made up rumor, Mort sticks with his story, next day says how its still possible and they are in talks (schefter says no talks have taken place) then 2 days later Mort isn’t saying anything about it, never admits he was wrong or made it up and is instead giving other names as possible candidates for the job…hah

2.3 Million Reasons
Tim Sylvia’s 36 seconds and Arlovski’s three minutes in the ring with Fedor cost Affliction 2.3 million. What did Fedor make? 600k plus what, $3 million in unreported bonus money funneled through M1? These guys had great intentions- fighters should be making more money than what they do at UFC, but how do you justify $300,000 for Matt Lindland, $500,000 for the Baby Faced Assassin? They may be top level fighters, but they are both boring and have no draw! Giving up PPV percentages with nothing in return to two companies who don’t need charity…it is actually embarrassing how they went about their business. The icing on the cake was letting Jerry/Gary Millen post his blogs and now everyone at Affliction seems not only incompetent but they seem like scumbags too. Good riddance.
by I don't wear mma t-shirts on Jan 29, 2009 11:47 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I agree with most of your post, but I don’t get the line of thinking that “fighters should be making more money than what they do at UFC.” Fighters only deserve the amount that the market says they do. Everyone who has attempted to pay them more (they need to in order to lure them away from the UFC) has failed in spectacular fashion. Yeah sure, it can be done for a fighter here or there, but not on a wide scale. The UFC has a huge advantage in the exposure and credibility of their product. As long as that remains true, they set the bar on how high fighters’ salaries go. At least they will when promotors realize that they can’t realistically compete with the UFC.
I do sympathize with the fact that undercard fighters are making peanuts. The only thing that will drive salaries upward is the growth of the sport. Despite promotions dropping left and right, I still think the sport is growing- it just might not look like people expected it would.

I’m sorry, but if this ends with Fedor in the UFC and Zuffa owning part of Affliction clothing, the people that hate Dana better run for the hills, because they will be blinded by the smile on his face at the press conference to announce this.
by Phildo on Jan 29, 2009 11:54 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
This could be a win-win
If Affliction gets their clothes back in the octagon it increases thier audience ten-fold from what it is running their own shows, and if the UFC gets $5 from every one of those shirts that is sold then that is just millions more added to their bottom line, not to mention eliminating their #1 competitor from the marketplace (even though it looks like that was gonna happen anyway). Really it seems like this could work out good for both sides, plus it would bring Fedor one step closer to fighting for the UFC and maybe bring back Arlovski.

Affliction gave us two great events with two great Fedor fights, so I’m not going to launch any futher scathing attacks at their business plan or whatever. They just got too many partners and were eventually sucked dry.

Well if true i hope the talent goes over to japan. MMA needs diversity and japan offers an entirely different perspective than the states. PRIDE started out with just heavyweights, an influx of heavyweight talent is just what the doctor ordered to get the japanese scene up and running.
I can’t think out of the guys Affliction used who would want to go to the UFC. Arlovski and Belfort have interests outside MMA that they want to persue that conflicts with the UFC exlusivity, so they won’t go. The UFC burned it’s bridges with Lindland, Barnett, Fedor, Alexs, Babalu, Soko, Werdum and others, and you can be sure they will never go to there. The only reasonable place seems like japan.

Wow, I feel sorry for Tom . . . how bad do you have it when you’re a guest on Tom Lekyis?
Smart of Zuffa asking for a piece of the t-shirt business to let them back in but I don’t think that will happen. UFC needs the sponsorship dollars because of the {expletive} economy, but it’s always wise to try to take advantage of the situation.
If Affliction really needs to cut bait and put on a third show to fulfill there contract w/partners I suggest a Brett Cooper main event on HDNet next month. It will interesting to see who will come into the UFC fold and who will not. Also, can we say MMA union attempt in Dec 2009?

fighters follow the paycheck
Fedor is just about the only one of the Affliction fighters that no longer worries about the paycheck… just the legacy.. which he could further solidify in the UFC. Babalu will come back.. Werdum needs big wins to get back in the picture.. Vitor loves money and attention and is on good terms with the UFC.. if Affliction does pursue the 3rd show.. Barnett will be demolished by Fedor in my opinion.. that wouldn’t leave him being desired by the UFC no matter what terms they are on. Just hope the Russians get on board (Russians = Fedor, Aleks, Mousasi, Magomedov, Khalidov, Schlmenko)

by Michael Rome on Jan 30, 2009 1:46 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Everything about this situation is weird. But Atencio says he was never on that show. To quote from a UG thread:
"Atencio is on hardcore sports radio with Gabe Morency right now. He is saying the rumors are complete fabrications, that he recently talked with Golden Boy and they are investing huge money into Affliction’s mma promotion and that Affliction mma will be around for many, many years. He went on to say he has never been on the Tom Leykis show, people are bored and making up lies, and that Affliction will be around for a long, long time.
Gabe brought up the fact that mma fans make him laugh because they are the only fans who care as much about ticket sales, ppv buys and promoters money as they do good fights. (great point)
Atencio said there is a sitdown in the next few weeks with Trump and Golden Boy, and they are going to announce a plan to host fights every 3 or 4 months. He said Golden Boy and Trump invested A LOT of money into the company that people do know about. He said he loves the hate because it means he’s doing something right if people are talking, it’s only their second event, and they will be around for many years as a legitimate thread about the UFC. He thinks Zuffa is spreading the rumors because they are worried, as they are with cross promotion."
That certainly sounds way more in line with the recent reports about Affliction’s better than expected PPV performance.

Affliction probably did call UFC. Who knows? They did after their 1st event, maybe it was to bargain a better deal this time around. As always, the truth usually lies somewhere in the middle.

The END of WAMMA
This is the bigger story…. When Affliction does go down, all the WAMMA parasites that tried to steal the UFC’s hard earned investment in making one belt per division that ‘really’ meant something, will make a thud heard nowhere around the world.
Affliction just putting on shows is/was admirable… Affliction trying to promote World Championship belts and dilute the entire sport into a boxing scenario of multiple belts with no real juice is altogether a different beast. I hope Affliction dies hard, fast and ugly and sends a message that resonates with impunity.
I live in Fiji… there are no Affliction T-Shirts here… but i can tell you in my last trip to the States this Xmas, I saw plenty of Affliction shirts selling for 25-40% in bargain stores. The end is near for the skull and gothic wear clothier.
Whether or not Affliction folds just yet, the ‘real’ day of reckoning is coming sooner as opposed to later. Fedor’s silly management will resort to once again fighting Ho He Huge and other UFC castoffs in Japan or finally step up against the best and reap endorsement opportunities that will dwarf his fight purses.
Dana and his mafioso policies will NEVER allow Affliction back in the fold “dat would be bad for f’ing business” So it will be soon time to say goodbye to the sinking S.S. Affliction
and watch Atencio join the banquet line with Gary Shaw for the $8.99 all you can eat meal deal in order to stay on a personal budget at the end of the month. Quite a fall from his Vegas style schtick.
Their shows did have some entertainment value… too bad they wanted the slice of pie they had no right to eat. So when it happens I will say, “good riddance to bad rubbish”

He tapped out due to strikes at the last minute of the third round. And as the Cabbage Patch kid says, “You’re a bitch if you tap out due to strikes.”
I don’t know what happened to Banett too. He’s should’ve been able to finish Yvel in the first round. In the second round as well. Those submission attempts at the dying seconds of the first two rounds was just overly sloppy, not what I expect from him. Although, he could’ve done those attempts just to rack points with the judges.
Atencio and White are promoters, one would expect half-truths, half-lies and whole mouthful of hyperbole from these guys.

If you think we manufacture our work or don’t do due diligence or don’t properly couch information, go somewhere else.

I’d like to see some tangible numbers on the buy rate. That said.. I sincerely hope that Affliction does well enough to stay around. Adversely, I hope that they aren’t too proud to pack it in if they’re hemorrhaging cash (both with lack of profit and the total submission of any real residuals to their "partners"). Pride has dealt the killing blow to many a business..

LOL
Attencio also came out saying he had to “open up more seating” because ticket sales were so good for Day of Reckoning.
Give it a week or so my furry friends…

What does it feel like to start a shitstorm? :-)

I don’t care about affliction. Everyone knew the end was near. What I want to know is, why does your woman call you logic?

She calls you “lol”? That’s not a good sign, man.

I take it there is nothing to add to the story?

No shit, but it’s only cool for your woman to call you by your internet handle if your internet handle is your name or something like Horsecock, or Stalion, or something more descriptive that she might call you while not knowing it was your handle.

I’m guessing they were in some Sim’s room or somewhere in Oz world when that conversation happened.

You, for one, have my complete confidence. Or you’ve got balls the size of oranges to make this up :-)
The next question, of course, is which fighters will be moving directly from Affliction to Zuffa?
by subo on Jan 30, 2009 2:43 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
How about none since contracts are not transferable and would all be free agents to all lpromotions?
by MMASuPreMaCy on Jan 30, 2009 3:08 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Dude. I know it wouldn’t be transferred. I’m asking what Affliction fighters, as free agents, would sign with Zuffa.

The idea of Zuffa having someone post on blogs to try and manipulate things has me rolling, yea because starting rumors in fanpost is really going to bring Affliction down. Lets face it they don’t need to do anything to get people on the internet to take up sides and argue stories back and forth that happens naturally but the internet fans are just a small part of MMA fans. I guess that is part of what makes all this so fun.

Yah cheapseats
If you really knew as much as you’d say you’d look at it the same way as WEC 34 who had to open the upper deck. The only difference was Affliction had to open more seats because nobody would buy 500 dollar tickets
Gimme 1 Round!

They may not be done today, but they can’t continue running things like this and barely breaking even. Fact is, UFC has a monopoly on US viewership right now and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

Ah, so I guess this thread is a fail?
Well, its been a month since this prediction and no announcement. We have seen the (rumoured) signing of Din Thomas to a multifight deal by Affliction which suggests that no announcement is coming at all. So, what happened? mmalogic? Were you misinformed? Did Tom change his mind about pulling out? Did early ppv reports prove to be a poor estimate of the total? Was it simply a Zuffa-initiated rumour to discredit Affliction and quell the apparent positivity surrounding the success of DOR?? Give us something.
