Jeremy Stephens steps in for Franca, faces Lauzon at UFN 17

MMA Junkie is is reporting that the UFC has found a last-minute replacement for the injured Hermes Franca to take on Joe Lauzon at UFN 17 a week from Saturday:

Multiple sources close to the fighter today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that [Jeremy] Stephens has officially accepted the bout, which takes place Feb. 7 at the USF Sun Dome in Tampa, Fla. The night's main card airs on Spike TV.

Franca was forced off the card this week after suffering a torn ACL in his right knee.

Stephens, who's recently been training with Franca, is also currently scheduled to fight "The Ultimate Fighter 8" winner Efrain Escudero at UFC Fight Night 18. He still plans to compete in that April 1 event, health permitting, a source said.

As the report mentions, Stephens was originally training to face TUF 8 lightweight winner Efrain Escudero at UFN 18 in April, and he still plans to take that fight so long as he comes out of the Lauzon fight relatively unscathed.  This is very similar to Josh Koscheck's situation in the fall, where he stepped in for an injured Diego Sanchez to take on Thiago Alves at UFC 90 in October, even though he already had a fight with Yoshiyuki Yoshida scheduled for December.  Koscheck fell to Alves, but overcame the loss and brutally KO'd Yoshida less than 2 months later.

Stephens last saw action in November, when he KO'd newcomer Rafael Dos Anjos with a brutal uppercut at UFC 91.

Stephens is my favorite UFC Lightweight. I like Joe, but Jeremy is the man. Love his style.

Have you forgotten about Florian, or is it blasé to like the Ken-Flo?

ive never met a Florian fan to be honest

people just dont like him as best i can tell. He seems to me to be very used-car-salesman-esque.

that may be just my narrow perception though, i really dont know.

im a florian fan.. Not a BIG florian fan, but i like his fighting style.. And how can anyone forget BJ? haha. Stephens is one of the most exciting prospects out there, and is one of my favorites too, but kenflo and bj are higher.. Aoki too, although fly said UFC guys..

I’m a fan of the Ken-Flo. I like the slow-pace technical aspect of his game, and others such as Machia and Silva (albeit Silva is a little more aggressive than the two).

To me, the technical guys will always stand out over the brawlers. The latter are fun to watch, but their games are very limited and they usually fall at the hands of the technical striker.

I would love to see Florian fight a brawler like Gamburyan or Stephens and just pick them apart.

Hi

I’m a massive Florian fan. He’s a thinking man’s fighter and a real follower of the sport.

You know if BJ loses his bout against GSP, Florian is next in line for a crack at the LW belt.
