WEC Welterweight Champ Carlos Condit to Fight at UFN18

The folks at Five Ounces of Pain have an exciting report up, about the future of exciting WEC welterweight champ, Carlos Condit (read the full scoop at the link above):

Instead of finding a new opponent for Condit, sources have informed FiveOuncesOfPain.com that Zuffaofficials have decided to transfer Condit to the UFC’s welterweight division. Additionally, Condit’s Octagon debut could take place in a televised bout during UFC Fight Night 18 on April 1 against Martin Kampmann.

It appears that Brock Larson has had to pull out of a proposed title fight with "The Natural Born Killer", and rather than find a replacement, Condit has been transitioned over to the UFC instead. I for one, am excited to see how Condit fares against the UFC crew. Say what you will about the talent pool in the WEC's lightweight, and welterweight classes... Condit is the real deal. Kampmann is certainly a tall order right off the bat. Should make for an exciting scrap. What say you?

Finally. Hopefully Brock Larson doesn’t pull something crazy and screw this up.

No Point in a WEC WW Class anymore?

Who is Larson supposed to fight now with no Condit?
Its like PB without the J.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jan 27, 2009 6:09 PM EST reply actions

Agreed...

I don’t get why they are getting rid of all the divisions in the WEC… its not making the appearance of a WEC PPV look to good.

by Gunslinger20 on Jan 27, 2009 6:10 PM EST up reply actions

Either the WEC is folding into the UFC altogether, or, the WEC will focus on LW’s and down.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jan 27, 2009 6:12 PM EST up reply actions

You’re probably right…

Sucks, but you’re probably right.

Larson is also expected to make the move to the UFC. Despite reports that the Minnesota fighter was injured, causing the fight cancellation, MMAWeekly.com learned that the fight was simply cancelled and neither fighter had any kind of injury to force the situation.

Ehhh???

Now the WEC WW division is folding into the UFC? Why do they have to fold it in, can’t they just have Condit fight on UFN w/out folding the whole division? What happened to Larson anyways?

by Gunslinger20 on Jan 27, 2009 6:09 PM EST reply actions

WEC has no WW’s.
Condit was its Urijah, and not a popular one as that.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jan 27, 2009 6:10 PM EST up reply actions

Why not add up and comers to the WW division?

Bring the other divisions back and have the WEC be the proving grounds for fighters before they get brought up to the UFC.

by Gunslinger20 on Jan 27, 2009 6:12 PM EST up reply actions

I think the UFC gave up on that idea for some reason.
TUF and UFN is where they will focus for that I guess.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jan 27, 2009 6:13 PM EST up reply actions

good point..

Sad its been reduced to Mac Danzig and Josh Neer as co main events and last season’s TUF speaks for itself.

I always enjoyed the early WEC shows.

by Gunslinger20 on Jan 27, 2009 6:18 PM EST up reply actions

For me, Danzig and Neer are a side note. I had Kampmann making serious noise this year in the WW division so I’m extremely stoked about this fight.

I also agree that more talent in one place makes for better match ups – so I’m all for using WEC as a proving ground and moving the top guys to the UFC.

by donkeypunch on Jan 27, 2009 6:37 PM EST up reply actions

Shit, Kampmann was making noise at 185 until Marquardt fucked his shit up. He’s legit.

by Derek Suboticki on Jan 27, 2009 8:15 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

I’m just having trouble picking a winner in this one.

by donkeypunch on Jan 27, 2009 8:29 PM EST up reply actions

This is a good idea. The WEC doesn’t have room for women’s MMA right now. Cut out another weight class, you can make room for chick fights.

by Michaelthebox on Jan 27, 2009 6:18 PM EST reply actions

Cutting down that weight class basically gets rid of what, 4 or 5 WEC fighters?

Condit
Larson
Miura
……….???
Alessio is already gone…

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jan 27, 2009 6:20 PM EST up reply actions

They had 6 WW fighters at WEC 38 alone.

by Michaelthebox on Jan 27, 2009 6:30 PM EST up reply actions

That was their entire WW class minus Condit and Larson

Condit
Larson
Miura
Edgar
Lennox
Avina
Villefort
Campbell

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jan 27, 2009 6:38 PM EST up reply actions

Hendricks, Haskins.

What are you arguing? That dropping one weight class won’t make room for another? I’m quite certain the WEC can make a 145 womens division with roughly 10 fighters or so. That might be optimal actually, given the talent out there right now.

by Michaelthebox on Jan 27, 2009 6:46 PM EST up reply actions

The entire WW payroll minus Condit probably equals what Tara LaRosa wants per fight.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jan 27, 2009 7:20 PM EST up reply actions

I doubt the WEC would want LaRosa.

by Michaelthebox on Jan 27, 2009 7:40 PM EST up reply actions

Anyways, if they can’t get Gina, which will be another big contract, I don’t even see the WEC creating a womens division.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jan 27, 2009 7:21 PM EST up reply actions

I would probably agree with that.

Did you know we are in high demand, Laura?

by Eugene Schelfaut on Jan 27, 2009 7:25 PM EST up reply actions

I can see WEC paying out the nose for Gina. She would instantly be the most valuable fighter on their roster.

Even without Gina though, theres some reason to create the division. You gotta have somebody fighting to fill a fight card, even if they aren’t draws, and eventually they can build a real division with or without Gina.

by Michaelthebox on Jan 27, 2009 7:41 PM EST up reply actions

If they have a division by the time she gets out of her contract garbage with ZombieXC, that’ll probably sweeten the pot for her.

There are a number of gal fighters out there. If they build it, she will come.

Larson not injured

MMA Weekly is saying that Larson is not injured, and that the fight with was simply cancelled by the WEC. They also add that Larson is headed back to the UFC as well, where he’s 1-1 (split decision loss to Jon Fitch, unam. decision win over Keita Nakamura). Furthermore, there’s been no official confirmation that WEC’s 170 lb division is folding, but without Condit and Larson, it seems rather obvious.

Awesome. I am intrigued by this match up as well. This is def a true test for Condit and will be his toughest opponent since Jake Shields a few years back..

Rec'd

This should be fronted for its significance, since it suggests that the WEC 170 division is being absorbed into the UFC.

If you go into the HTML editor for the post, selectable under the space for the title, and in the code for the image you will see class=“photo” .

The photo part adds the gray line as a border. It is added automatically and photo can be deleted if you don’t like the border.

If you have class=“photo left” the picture will be anchored on the left of the entry with text wrapping to the right side.
class=“photo right” will do the opposite.

Wrapping the text is probably the easiest thing you can do to make a post look better.

I’ve been saying it for the past year plus, but I don’t find the reason to have a WEC, calling WEC style shows UFC whatever would make it more known, and plus with the monthly PPV could have a monthly free show also, and have 7 or so weight classes in UFC. Didn’t see the point of keeping Condit in WEC or even some of the LW’s, and Faber, Brown, Torres, etc (Kid!!, ha, if he signed) could easily be in a UFC FW and BW classes…

by Reaser on Jan 27, 2009 9:20 PM EST reply actions

I sort of agree with what you’re saying.

To me the WEC couldn’t exist and it wouldn’t make a difference. With the exception of Faber and Torres in the feather and bantam weight divisions respectively, I don’t see the need for an alternate WW division existing in a Zuffa owned subsidiary.

The WEC should exist for the purpose of holding weight classes that do not exist in the UFC, like feather and bantam divisions, and a womens 145lb division.

WEC is sort of hidden away in the shadows and only comes out to play when Faber is making a title defense.

According the WEC’s site, Condit was the one who got injured so somebody must have really bad information regarding this match being cancelled. I also seriously doubt that the UFC would out of nowhere decide to end the WW division in the WEC, there is no reason to Condit is becoming a star in the promotion and he’ll probably be on the WEC 40 card.

by Raker on Jan 28, 2009 3:44 AM EST reply actions

MMA Weekly is now recognizing Condit’s injury, but reporting that he’ll still be on the UFN card in April as the injury is minor.

Frontpage this!

This is big news, and evidence that the scenario discussed in Toward a Workable UFC-WEC Hybrid is already coming to pass.

I like it. There is/was some utility in breaking in inexperienced fighters in the WEC, out of the bright lights of the UFC. But the duplication of weight classes lead to the perception that the WEC was only the little brother of the UFC. Concentrating on divisions not in the UFC is a good first step in creating a second top-notch product. If they can replicate what they’ve done in the Featherweight and Bantamweight divisions in the rest of the roster then they’ll really have something.

by BilboMcFonzie on Jan 28, 2009 9:57 AM EST reply actions

Condit is the 1 WEC guy I really wanted in the UFC.

WEC doesn’t need WWs.

If you're not submitting, you're just rolling around with another guy.

by BJJDenver on Jan 28, 2009 11:04 AM EST reply actions

Condit and Kampmann are very similar fighters so this should be an interesting matcup, They are both strong on the ground and standing. I give the edge to Kampmann because of his experience in the UFC but Condit has fought some tough guys the last few years as well.

by lbk on Jan 28, 2009 12:13 PM EST reply actions

I wonder if anyone at Bloody Elbow knows what the hell is going on?, because it’s obvious that Five Ounces and MMA Weekly don’t see to. I’m a big fan of Condit and want to know where all these rumors are coming from and neither Sam nor the people at MMA Weekly are exactly hitting the ball out of the park with their sources so far with this story.
