UFC to Open Network of "UFC Gyms"
Our good friend Beau Dure of USA Today brings us the interesting news:
UFC is partnering with Mark Mastrov, founder of the 24 Hour Fitness chain, to build UFC Gyms, offering a blend of traditional and modern workouts with a healthy dose of UFC atmosphere.
For UFC President Dana White, who worked in the fitness industry before moving into mixed martial arts, the gyms are a chance to extend UFC's brand as the company goes global. White, not one to keep his ambitions quiet, thinks the new business can make an impact.
"The fitness industry has gotten stale, much like the fight industry had gotten stale," White says. "A lot of it hasn't changed much since the 60s — a lot of the same equipment, a lot of the same stuff going on. We're going to have treadmills and weights for people who still want that, but there's going to be a lot of different things."
Those different things may include flipping tires, lifting chains, swinging sledgehammers or lugging bricks.
"If you look at the world today when it comes to training, everybody's starting to morph off into what I call nontraditional training," Mastrov says. "What UFC Gyms is going to do is leverage that."
Workouts can also include classes in mixed martial arts disciplines such as jiu-jitsu, taekwondo or Muay Thai fighting. But Mastrov and White see their gyms as a lively workout facility for all types of people, not as a breeding ground for new fighters.
...
The atmosphere, though, may feel like a fight night. The gyms will have flat-screen TVs offering UFC footage as well as the usual cable choices, and Mastrov says they'll have plenty of music with "nice bass."
"When you're working out, it's going to almost be like being at an event — how visually stimulating an event is," White says.
An intriguing idea. If the UFC's gamble on this is correct, it could do wonders not just for the UFC brand, but for MMA and local MMA as well. Being able to associate MMA with fitness or gyms increases opportunity for local shows to market their product through partnership efforts with local gyms and organizations. As for the gyms, I hope they succeed, but part of me also worries about potential UFC overreach. I don't think the brand itself will be affected if the gyms do poorly, but for what they are offering I'm guessing the price point might need to be high. Additionally, they are offering the sort of workouts that people say they want, but can never commit to. I've spent a huge portion of my life in gyms, so how that intense and non-traditional push can squared with a relaxed atmoshpere will be a very tricky play. Then again, never underestimate the appeal of vicarious living. Best of luck, UFC.
UPDATE: A reader points me to a website the UFC has already set up for this venture.

I smell UFC boot camps
Bootcamps are huge right now. I expect the boot camp workout to be a part of the UFC gym theme for sure. I doubt we will be seeing any all out Sean Sherk workouts but many gyms already have big tractor tires, sledge hammers and chains. I doubt they will endorse a heavy bag room because of all the wrist injuries people suffer from improper training. Martial arts classes are popular in many gyms and have been for a long time but without striking equipment its all Tae Bo.

I’d be wary signing a contract with the UFC – you might end up signing away your likeness or ability to sign with another gym for eternity when you join!! To be fair, I think that’s less draconian than most other standard gym policies these days.

Unless they’re buying gyms, I don’t know how that’s gonna happen. The folks from 24 Hr. Fitness are no longer with that company. This is a different venture. I also agree with Lynchman.

Im sure they will take an existing gym
A franchise that has gone out of business like a local bally’s, repaint it, new logos and put an octagon where the racquetball courts were…. I mean, they are not going to build from scratch
Combattimento Gymnasiums, LLC d/b/a UFC Gym
from the Terms of Use page
Not sure if that was a preexisting company or another Zuffa “Bevanda Magica.”

While this may be good for the sport
I dont think its a gym I would like to be a part of. Its going to attract a lot of these guys:

who juice, tan and look at themselves in the mirror all day
and not a lot of these:

hot athletic eye candy.
Great News!!!
Now all the annoying meat-heads at my gym will have a place to go.

Oodles of tang coming my way! Not sure how my wife will feel about this though. :P

A gym for the casual fan? My oxymoron sensor is going off…

I think the best part of this whole thing is that everyone is discussing how it affects the membership of actual MMA gyms. Like, guys, did ya’ read the article? Its just a marketing gimmick for all purpose fitness clubs they’re hoping takes off in the test markets. If it fails, no one is gonna care.
I look at it as a gym for people that would absolutely hate rolling with someone that was actually trying to do it competitively. And you’re right, if it goes down in flames, big deal. See? I’m not a total nuthugger.

My guess: no. Outside of the “UFC gym,” probably, though.

The answer is “no” and that’s quite clear based on what those involved have said. Should it be a long term success (and my guess is that they end up, at best, having short term success comparable more to something like Discovery Zone than a 24 Hr. Fitness), it would do some great things like create a venue for aging fighters to make money doing stuff like seminars at various UFC Gyms.
