How serious is your desire to be involved with MMA?

I'm the people's promoter. Whatever the people want, I'm going to promote. Whatever the public wants, that's what I want to give them. I want to give it to them with candor so they can quantify, qualify and identify with whoever the athlete is.

Your rival Bob Arum has made condescending remarks about MMA, referring to their fan base as too unrefined. Your thoughts?

They are Americans. They are people. Who am I to say that something is wrong with them when I'm always crying about, "Why you're treating me this way?" They bring competition. They bring people. Let's enrich it and monetize it. Let's bring the people something.

When you bring a new store to town, you can choose between the prices and the fabrics. When I bring my guys in we'll be getting prepared to take on Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta in their league vs. our league. The same thing I want to do with the sport of boxing I want to do with MMA. Make it competitive, man. Make it a comparison. Even though they've put on good fights, let's see what they do with someone totally independent.

So does this mean you're adding an MMA arm to Don King Productions?

Well, I can't do this all by myself. I'm 78 but I'm not slowing down. I've got all the time in the world to rest when I get to heaven.

Paul Malignaggi robbed against Juan Diaz.

What's worse: incompetent MMA judges or corrupt boxing judges? Scott Christ explains what happened last night:

"After a fight that many felt he won, Malignaggi still had no beef with Juan Diaz. But his nightmares came true when he lost 115-113, 116-112 and a ridiculous 118-110 -- from Van Hoy -- on the scorecards.

From my view, Malignaggi (26-3, 5 KO) largely dominated the fight defensively and with speed. He looked like the vintage Malignaggi that was a legit contender at 140 pounds. Diaz (35-2, 17 KO) did survive a bad cut this time around, and didn't fight badly. But he had a horrible time closing distance on the longer, taller, quicker Malignaggi, and it was Paulie that made much of the fight go.

It was also, it should be noted, a highly-entertaining style collision between two guys that came to mix it up and win. They both needed it badly, and fought like it. But it was Malignaggi, in my opinion, that won the bout. And I'm not alone. Bad Left Hook scored it 116-112 for Paulie. HBO's Harold Lederman scored it 115-113 for Malignaggi."

Blez: What's it like to have the Bloody Elbow/USA Today MMA Rankings?

Thomas: Unequivocally, that’s the finest reward of anything I’ve experienced since I started blogging. To be recognized by the second largest media on the planet written in the English language is an honor in and of itself. But we’ve actually contributed something to the sport as well. Our rankings demonstrate a step up and commitment to a higher, more sophisticated level of reporting in the mainstream press. Rather than one off articles about fighters that are essentially nothing more than human interest stories, our rankings remind folks MMA is a sport with athletes jockeying for position and hierarchy in hotly contested battles all over the world. That’s all together new for MMA in terms of mainstream media exposure and I am very honored Bloody Elbow helped bring that about.

Blez: What's your hope for Bloody Elbow?

Thomas: I have no formal vision. My only hope is that we can maintain the high standard of quality as we expand our format and grow our output. I’ve found that if I focus on delivering a consistently good product, the rest of the details often sort themselves out. The only major priority I have is quality. Again, with a sport like MMA that’s still grappling with sensitive image issues, I’ve found producing thought-provoking, measured writing can affect opinion more. The more mainstream sports fan and sporting world expect MMA to be followed by the dregs of society. Having writing and analysis beyond the third grade level can actually do wonders for MMA’s acceptance levels, to say nothing of how concerned we are with producing high quality work as a matter of professional responsibility. But yeah, I say openly I write concerned about how the mainstream perceives the MMA community. Someone’s got to write on a level they respect. Might as well be us.
