I HAVE AN AFFLICTION, AND THE ONLY PRESCRIPTION IS MORE TRASH TALK

"There’s the asshole. Oh! did I just say this on TV?" - HDNet analyst Bas Rutten. Yes, Bas, you did, and we're all a little happier for it. (MMA Mania)

"I was flipping through 944 magazine and I see Dana there all swelled out from steroids. You look at the kettle, the kettle's black. You can't look at him any other way, the kettle's black." - Former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz, I guess insinuating that he's the pot? (Cage Writer)

"No, I wasn't surprised because Sylvia just stood right in front of him. And I know Sylvia can be beaten quickly because I beat Sylvia in 47 seconds. Of course, after that he beat me twice." - Former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski, when asked if he was surprised that Fedor Emelianenko defeated Tim Sylvia in a swift 36 seconds. (Fanhouse)

"I think Andrei Arlovski is a douche bag and I think he's bad for the sport. He's rude to fans. I don't like him." - Former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia, returning the favor. But how does his pee pee taste, Tim? (RingleaderFightNews.com)

"I think there has to be (competition). I think when you have a one-horse race, things get boring. They put on 20 events a year, they don't have to put much into the cards. They don't give much to their real fans." - Donald Trump Jr., who must have missed UFC 91, UFC 92, and the upcoming UFC 94. Though Paul Buentello and Gilbert Yvel on the same card make a strong case for Affliction. (Cage Writer)

Star-divide

FROM THE MOUTHS OF BABY FACED ASSASSINS

"That guy's a dirtbag. He throws a bunch of money on stage, of course when a girl goes to pick it up, he slams her head into the stage. You can't do that. You can't be laying hands on women." - Former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett, not taking about upcoming opponent Gilbert Yvel, but former Dallas Cowboy Adam "Pacman" Jones. (Cage Writer)

"Gilbert Yvel hasn't ended anyone's career or paralyzed people or had anybody shot. I'd easily give Gilbert a chance, one chance, to fight agan. Pacman, I'd throw that guy in prison." - Barnett, going to even further lengths to defend a man known for biting, eye couging, and assaulting officials.

"As far as his striking not being impressive, I guess Freddie Roach is going to eat crow." Barnett, debating comments made by Roach with regards to Fedor's boxing. (Cage Writer)

"The minute you push him, he doesn't go back, he comes forward and he just immediately punches and tries to take you down. If he encounters trouble on the feet, he doesn't try to stay and work his way out of that, he changes gears." - Barnett, on Fedor's strategy and reaction to an aggressive opponent.

IF HE DOESN'T KILL ST. PIERRE, HE'S GOING TO IMPALE SOME CAMERAMEN

"I told them that if you keep doing this these cameras aren’t going to come around anymore so you guys better straighten up your act." - UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn, upset about being portrayed as a lazy, spoiled rich kid in the first episode of "UFC Prime Time." (TapOut Radio)

"People who don't believe I can win this fight, it's simply because they don't believe in themselves that they could go out and beat a great champion at a higher weight. And it's really their problem and their lack of confidence." - Penn, who needs to know that there are those of us who are willing to risk downing an entire bottle of maple syrup for him. (Cage Writer)

"It’s surprising that he’s in such good shape without the use of steroids or growth hormones, he’s eating cheeseburgers and all that. (GSP trainer) Firas [Zahabi], after the fight, he can go home, walk to his bedroom, take his shoes off, lie down in his bed, take about 20 or 30 minutes and go fuck himself." - Penn, badass. That is all. (Hardcore Sports Radio)

DEMOCRACY LOL

"What the people from Ultimate Fighting will tell you is that 'We've changed the rules and it's no longer this brutal, no-holds-barred sport that it was in the past. That's far from the whole story. What they don't tell you is what is allowed. Kicking to the head. Kneeing them. Sitting on top of them and repeatedly punching them in the head and face. They don't tell you those things." - New York Assemblyman Bob Reilly, who I must imagine has a little brother complex. Hey Bob, take B.J.'s advise to Zahabi and go fuck yourself, buddy. (Newsday)

YOU'RE A FUCKING LEGEND, BRO

"You won that round. You're winning that fight. You hurt him bad twice. He'll be looking for a way out. It's a war and you're winning. You hurt him twice. He's really hurt, he's on wobbly legs. Just throw punches. You're a legend, it's war. You're doing awesome. It's a great fucking fight. Blast the straight right hand. All you need is the straight right hand. Straight right hand. Straight right hand." - Phil Baroni, giving encouragement in the corner of former UFC champion Mark Coleman after round one.  Coleman lost a decisive first round. (Cage Writer)

"Coleman you're a legend. You're gonna win this fight. You are a legend. He's dead tired, he couldn't even do it. He's gonna go with two right hands in a row. Just throw rights hands. He's standing there dead tired. It's an unbelievable fight bro. It's a great fucking fight. You're gonna fucking win dude." - Baroni, after the second round.  Coleman proceeded to be knocked out in the third round.

"I didn’t have any money for a training camp before this fight. Those things cost money man and I just couldn’t afford it." - Coleman, legendary. (Telegraph)

AS COOL AS THE OTHER SIDE OF THE PILLOW

"Stuart Scott from ESPN, because I’m tired of his one-liners that haven’t been cool since Hammer couldn’t touch this." - Drew Fickett, when asked who he would choose if he could fight anyone.  Boo yah! (MMA Fiend)

IS MIKE THOMAS BROWN A SATANIST?

"To get a title shot anywhere is a dream come true, but to get it in my home state is unreal. I have a lot of advantages fighting in Texas. I think God is stacking the deck against Mike. That’s my take on it anyway." - Leonard Garcia, taking the "Jesus in sports" thing way too far. (Corpus Christi Caller Times)

MORE WORLD CLASS TRAINING REGIMENS

"It’s just me in Auburn up here at Vision Quest. It’s a bunch of new guys I’m working with." - Former UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver, downgrading his training for a fight with a man who dominated him for five rounds.  Smart.  (MMA Weekly)

"Man, I wish one of these days, I’m going to give AMC and Matt Hume two solid months to train, but I haven’t had that luxury." - Pulver, it's not like you're a professional fighter or anything.

THE CHUCK LIDDELL DEFENSE

"I'm known for letting it all hang loose. I barely missed that elbow. Live by the sword, die by the sword. It's part of the fight game. On occasion you lose." - Former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber.  Maybe next time you should throw flashy, wild elbows at really solid opposition.  But that wouldn't be alpha male, would it? (Cage Writer)

WHITE NOISE

"If you saw the fallout with me and B.J. during ["Primetime Live"] — a lot of people thought that was contrived, but we don’t fucking fake anything here — it was all real." - UFC President Dana White.  Um, what about the ringtone we heard which was clearly added in post-production?  (IGN)

"The whole thing with the phone call was just that all he needed to do was pick up the phone and say, ‘Everything’s good. I’m training.’ It would have avoided a lot of behind the scenes drama." - White, or you could just get the fuck out of his business.

"You’re lucky if you see three or four of these fights in your lifetime." - White, true story.  Hopefully it lives up to the hype. (Las Vegas Sun)

PARTING SHOTS

"I’ve had a string of bad luck." - Ken Shamrock, yeah, a 3-8 record sine 2000 is "bad luck." (Sherdog)

"I think they’ve put me in other fights where they expected me to lose, but that didn’t happen. I guess I’m the guy they get to step in whenever they need somebody." - Keith Jardine, UFC whipping boy. (SI.com)

"We’re talking you’re up there with Anderson Silva and St. Pierre and Miguel Torres. That’s a pretty long, tall list to be on top of." - UFC interim heavyweight champion Frank Mir, arguing that calling Brock Lesnar a top fighter would put him on top of a very exclusive list.  Mir, predictably, disagrees. (MMA Weekly)

"I think with Silva you have to rough him up a bit, get in his face and smother his work. I think that is where people have been going wrong, they give him the distance to work with." - TUF 2 winner Michael Bisping, who should ask Dan Henderson, Rich Franklin, and James Irvin how that worked for them.  (Fighters Only)

"She has a heart. If she wants to be a fighter, she can be." - Master Toddy, trainer for a young girl who was chained to a bed by her dad as punishment for sneaking food when she was trying to make weight. (KTNV Las Vegas)

Hey now, if Jardine left the UFC he’d be the insta-WAMMA 205 champion. And you know this.

by subo on Jan 25, 2009 8:11 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No he wouldn't

Mousasi would kill that dude. I mean BADLY. He would mud-stomp his ass. And honestly I think King Mo would beat him based on style. Takedown to disgusting GnP death.

Gimme 1 Round!

by skwirrl on Jan 25, 2009 8:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Temper your enthusiasm

Mousasi hasn’t even taken a fight at 205 yet and you’re crowning him WAMMA champ? And I love King Mo, but he’d get Jacksonified via his inexperience. But I would take Babalu over Jardine by a narrow margin.

by Blackout612 on Jan 25, 2009 8:43 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Mousasi beat Musashi in a K1 kickboxing match, Musashi is regularly a heavyweight participant.

I would love to see Babalu vs Mousasi, but Jardine does not have the tools to contender with Mousasi, but I think he would be a good match up for Jardine.

The talks of him being the best in the Affliction card at 205 is easy.

I’d rather see him (Mousasi) fight Vitor Belfort at 185, that would be the two best non-UFC 185 pounders going at it.

by DirtyML on Jan 25, 2009 8:45 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

K1 fight?

Moot. He’s gotta do two things; fight at 205 (as in, MMA), and sign a deal with Affliction, before we start talking about him winning the title. He’s not going to get a WAMMA title fight at 205 in Japan. The argument is way too hypothetical, and it’s a poor example to make regarding why Jardine would not win the WAMMA title if he weren’t in the UFC.

by Blackout612 on Jan 25, 2009 8:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’d actually like to see Jardine/Babalu. Jardine would have the advantage standing and Babalu on the ground, but I’d like to see how the wrestling plays out and what Jardine’s ground game is like.

I do wonder what Freddie Roach thinks about the fight. AA was winning with his boxing and arguably lost in part because he abandoned it, so Roach could claim boxing>mma, but once the “mixed” aspect entered the fight, Fedor won. No one would probably doubt that boxers’ striking is overall better than mma striking, simply becasue that’s all the practice doing. I do wish Fedor had outstruck AA simply to further piss off Roach. (Can you tell I don’t like boxing?)

Fair Enough

I hadn’t heard of him until he began coaching AA, and apparently is a fantastic coach given how sharp AA’s striking was. However, dismissing Fedor’s armbar-thingys and saying ground fighting isn’t “manly” is, to me at least, MMA vs Boxing.

by themachiavellian on Jan 25, 2009 6:34 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Thats gamesmanship - he wanted Fedor to stand with AA to prove him wrong. And it WAS working Fedor's knees wobbled twice in one round. Nobody's done that

if you saw some of the lower profile interviews he’s been trying to learn the ground game but when it comes to training he does what he does best. Works on guys hands – then asked his other coaches what punches would work in this situation and what would happen if he countered with this in that situation. Any MMA fighter would be lucky to have Roach in their corner.

by skwirrl on Jan 25, 2009 7:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree – AA’s striking was incredible, Fedor looked flummoxed. After seeing Andrei’s improvement, I don’t doubt that any MMA fighter should turn him away. It’s just Roach’s apparent attitude toward MMA pissed me off. If he is learning the ground game, not necessarily to teach others but to aid in teaching more diversified striking, more power to him.

“"I think there has to be (competition). I think when you have a one-horse race, things get boring. They put on 20 events a year, they don’t have to put much into the cards. They don’t give much to their real fans.” – Donald Trump Jr., who must have missed UFC 91, UFC 92, and the upcoming UFC 94. Though Paul Buentello and Gilbert Yvel on the same card make a strong case for Affliction. "

I understand this is supposed to be tongue in cheek or something, but lol, what a slanty way of putting it when UFC 93, 95 and 96 are so lacking, and Affliction was so stacked with names besides Yvel and Buentello.

by smoogy on Jan 25, 2009 4:50 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

When you consider that some cards are free (85, 95) and that you can’t have Penn/St. Pierre superfights every card, the UFC has a very good track record with putting on entertaining cards. I could probably count on one hand the number of UFC cards that underwhelmed me in the past few years.

Also, I liked the Affliction card (both on paper and after the fact) and think competition is generally a good thing. I just think Trump’s statements are completely off-based given what the UFC has provided us the past few years.

by Mike Fagan on Jan 25, 2009 6:19 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

I think they’re downright accurate, given the context. UFC is now running near a dozen PPVs a year, and we’re already seeing the cracks with stuff like Hendo vs. Franklin and Rampage vs. Jardine main eventing. When you give a serious account of the stars on the Affliction card (Fedor, Barnett, Belfort, Rogerio, Hieron, Davis) as opposed to poking fun at Buentello and Yvel, you can see that PPVs like 93 and 96 look relatively thin by comparison.

by smoogy on Jan 25, 2009 6:58 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t really understand the argument. Affliction is going to be able to pack more star quality per event because they’re going to run a max of 4 shows in a year. If that. The UFC is running around 20. Obviously, they can’t put A+ main events on each show. It would be impossible. But take the UFC’s top 4-6 cards a year and compare it to this Affliction card, and it’s not even close. The UFC blows them out of the water.

In my opinion, 93, 95, and 96 may be lacking big main events, but the cards are still solid. You also have to remember that they’re coming off a disgusting run with UFC 91, 93, and 94 and want to gear up for a huge show at UFC 100. I expect UFC 98 and 99 to be pretty trashy so they can get as much star power as possible for 100.

Also, I’m not sure wher eyou get off listing Jay Hieron and LC Davis (and even Rogerio) as “stars.” Not to mention leaving off Andrei.

by Mike Fagan on Jan 25, 2009 7:24 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Um I really don't think so

Fedor vs AA is a main event that honestly to me is bigger than BJ and GSP

BJ is 3 and 2 in his last five fights. GSP has 2 wins in a row granted they were dominating.

They are truly in different weight classes with GSP being a large WW at the top of his game and BJ being a big LW.

Fedor has… Shit I don’t feel like counting the number of wins in a row somewhere around 25 or 26, (30 if you take into account the elbow was illegal).

AA had 5 wins in a row and the last 2 were dominant over decent competition and his hands had recently improved vastly.

Honestly its a bigger fight to me. Lets name the rest of the fights on the GSP vs Penn card

GSP vs Penn
Machida vs T. Silva – great fight
Bonnar vs Jones – wtf?
Parsnippyan vs Dong Hyun Kim – I care about this fight about zero except to hopefully see Parsnippyan lose again
Diaz vs Guida – Meh I think Guida is boring as shit – he’s a high energy lay’n’pray guy

Fitch vs Gono – Awesome matchup only on the undercard cause Dana is a dirtbag POS. Same as lil Nog vs the janitor
Manny gam vs Thiago Tavares – good fight except Manny Gam is another Lay’n’pray fighter
The other 3 really aren’t intreaging in the slightest

All in all – gimme the Affliction card that just passed over the “legendary” GSP vs Penn card.

Gimme 1 Round!

by skwirrl on Jan 25, 2009 7:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Guida’s boring? You, sir, are watching a different fighter than I. And GSP/BJ are the #1’s in different divisions at the peak of their careers. Fights like this happen so, so rarely.

by subo on Jan 25, 2009 8:14 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Never liked Guida

He’s got a ton of energy. Go back and watch the Danzig fight and see what he does with it. At least Sherk passes guard and slams people for Takedowns. BJ is overrated – YES I SAID IT, and GSP is going to tear him up.

Not to mention Buentello is 3 and 1 in the UFC

and recently fought for the Strikeforce championship against Overeem he’s alot better than random can on a UFC card. I would actually pick him over half the guys fighting at HW in the UFC right now. Yvel was on an 8 fight KO streak and every time that fight was on the feet you could see he was a threat to Barnett.

Oh btw – Buentello and Sidelnikov’s fight was good and not some stupid press against the fence 4 minutes a round and catch my breath stinkfest that a great deal of trimmer heavyweights end up resorting to.

Gimme 1 Round!

by skwirrl on Jan 25, 2009 7:34 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Buentello’s UFC wins were against Justin Eilers (1-3 in the UFC), Kevin Jordan (0-2) and Gilbert Aldana (0-2) – against competition that went a combined 1-7. The loss was to AA.

If Roger Huerta ain’t shit because he hasn’t beaten anyone, then neither the fuck is Paul Buentello.

by subo on Jan 25, 2009 8:17 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Hey he won his next fight after the brutal AA KO

then went to strikeforce. His 2 losses in the last 5 years have been to top top tier competition

List the opponents he’s beaten and try and tell me how any of them are relevant.

by Mike Fagan on Jan 25, 2009 8:45 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t even know where to start.

If you can’t see the importance and magnitude of Penn/St. Pierre, I’m not sure I can explain it to you. Stating that B.J. is “3-2 in his last 5 fights” without any sort of context is just mindblowing.

Same with Yvel being on an “8 fight KO streak” and Buentello’s UFC record and fight with Overeem (a fight in which he was destroyed). You just leave out the context of those statements.

by Mike Fagan on Jan 25, 2009 8:42 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Ok BJ lost his last 2 fights against top level 170 lbers

Hows that. BJ lost against a GSP that was half the fighter he is now and then against Hughes.

Yvel killed 8 cans in a row and Barnett knew not to risk standing with him because of his bad prior results against a guy that can kick the hell out of his legs.

I stand by Buentello tooling half the UFC HW division. Or do you forget how many people are saying Overeem is the one to challenge Fedor and beat Brock now. At least Buentello made it to the second round with him. Overeem is even a bad style matchup for Buentello. Buentello is a counterpuncher better at keeping distance and Overeem is a clinch fighter with devastating knees. As soon as Overeem got inside and started laying knees to the gut it was over.

Gimme 1 Round!

Buentello tooling half the UFC HW division.

Do you consider the crappy one-and-done fighters in the UFC to be part of the HW division? Because almost every single HW with a win in the UFC, I’d take over Buentello. Maybe not McCully.

Freddie Roach sez: “Fedor got lucky!”

by DirtyML on Jan 25, 2009 5:51 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I agree with skwirrl

….to a certain extent.

The UFC has put on a lot of good cards recently but there has also been a lot of ‘milking’. Rampage vs. Jardine should not be a PPV headliner nor should Henderson v. Franklin have been. In my mind, if these were free cards then they would be great. But if you’re putting on a PPV the main event at least has to be of the calibre of Evans-Griffin at least. Basically it is hard to justify a PPV unless there is a title at stake.

In the long run – I think the UFC should reduce its profitability and aim to get more free fight cards out there in order to expand the fan base.

Therefore, I would say that in the context of what he’s doing (i.e. he’s a rival promoter!) Trump’s comments are fine.
