WEC 38 Live Results and Commentary
Another day, another show, and another BloodyElbow Live Results thread. I'll be here with you live starting with the Versus broadcast of the show.
It's a little unfortunate that this show had to be the day after such a solid and newsworthy Affliction card, it will be a fun card with a lot of fireworks but it is just not going to get the press it deserves in the build-up or after the fact.
Regardless, we're here to talk about it with all of you. So chime in with your thoughts and lets give this show the attention it deserves.
Our one rule stands, no spoiling any fight that has already taken place until it is shown on the broadcast or the broadcast ends. No exceptions!
It's 9:32 on my watch and here we sit...with WEC not on and me forced to watch Sports Soup. Any idea what's going on?
Okay, so the deal is that the NHL All-Star game ran long, so rather than go to live fights Versus is giving Sports Soup (a show it re-runs constantly) its full 30 minutes. Which is pretty amazingly dumb.
9:42 and the broadcast is getting underway!
Jose Aldo vs. Rolando Perez - Is up first and will be starting shortly. Round 1 - Aldo's quick punches are flying early as Perez tries to circle to his left, which is right into Aldo's power hand (the right). Left hook, right high kick combo from Aldo. Perez with a right hand now. Lead uppercut misses from Aldo and Perez with a nice body head combo in return. Quick right hand lands for Aldo and then he eats a combo as he tries to follow up with a body kick. These two are going at it with some good technical striking, much better than the typical "sloppy kickboxing" we see in a lot of standup fights. Perez bent in with a punch and Aldo timed it perfectly with a perfect knee to the chin that knocks Perez out cold. Aldo jumps out of the cage and runs up about 20 rows high in the crowd celebrating. Perez leaned in for a jab to the body and paid the price. Jose Aldo wins by knockout round 1.
Danillo Villefort vs. Mike Campbell - Round 1 - Campbell throws a high kick right away and misses. He is bent low at the knees and is circling. Roundhouse kick to the body lands for Campbell. Villefort throws a kick and Campbell takes him down off of it. Big slam by Campbell and now Villefort works for a leglock but Campbell gets back to the feet. Knee just misses for Danillo. Campbell drops Villefort with a left but Danillo is okay. Kneebar turned into a sweep and now Villefort is on top in side control. Campbell gives up his back but is able to stand up. Hip toss by Villefort and he quickly moves to mount. A few elbows and again Campbell gives up his back. A good 40 or so punches land by Villefort to the side of Campbells head and the fight is finally stopped. Danillo Villefort wins by TKO (punches) round 1.
Scott Jorgensen vs. Frank Gomez - Round 1 - Gomez with a low kick early. Jorgensen in a lot shorter here. Shot attempt by Jorgensen and Gomez avoids almost right into a guillotine. They scramble a little bit and the guillotine gets sunk very deep and Frank Gomez is forced to tap. Scott Jorgensen wins by submission, round 1.
Jens Pulver vs. Urijah Faber - Round 1 - High kick attempt by Faber and Pulver throws him down. Back to standing and now Faber tries for a takedown but Pulver says no go. Faber pushes forward again and Pulver is able to separate again. Left hand to the liver lands HARD followed by a right hand and Pulver is hurt. Faber pounces and now locks in the guillotine and Pulver taps. Three losses in a row and Pulver did not look right at all tonight. Urijah Faber wins by submission (guillotine choke), round 1.
Pulver says he's not done and says that he does wonder if he is relevant in the division at this point.
Jamie Varner vs. Donald Cerrone for the WEC Lightweight Championship - Round 1 - Right hand lands square to the chin by Varner. Now a left lands for Cerrone. They trade shots and neither guy lands anything clean. Left hand lands for Varner and Cerrone's legs buckle. A left hand lands now and Varner takes him down which seems like an odd choice. Very high guard by Cerrone now. Varner separates and he is landing some huge bombs to the head of Cerrone. Varner is really pouring on some damage now. It's all punches and elbows and Cerrone has a very large knot on his forehead. Fourty seconds left and this is a totally one sided round. Cerrone gets back up and lands a knee to the body and then a body kick. The round ends and the last 30 seconds kept it from being a 2 point round on my card. 10-9 round for Varner. Round 2 - Varner with a takedown less than 30 seconds into the round. Side control now by Varner but quickly Cerrone gets him back in full guard. Cerrone gets right back up to his feet and we're standing again. Right hand just misses by Varner. Jab from Cerrone now and he is looking confident. Takedown by Varner as he gets tired of being walked down. More big ground n pound from Varner and then they go back to standing. Varner is looking a bit tired now. Low kicks are landing for Cerrone now. Close round with 90 seconds left. Body/Head combo lands for Varner. Lead uppercut lands on Varner's chin. Overhand right by Varner misses again. Another takedown by Varner and that may win him the round. Triangle is locked in as time expires. Very close round but I'll give it to Cerrone 10-9 (I have the fight 19-19). Round 3 - Some odd shenanegins to start the round with Varner drawing a line in the canvas and them touching gloves a few times. High kick blocked by Varner. Left hook lands for Varner and a jab from Cerrone. Body shot from Cerrone and he is looking pretty comfortable. A few right hands land hard and Cerrone's eye is bleeding badly and he stopped to wipe it so it must be bothering him. Guillotine choke by Varner gives up position and Cerrone is on top. Wall walk and they're standing. Cerrone keeps pawing at the cut, the ref should really let the doctor take a look. Left hook lands for Varner now. Cerrone's face is swolen and bloody with a minute ten seconds to go. Right hand lands for Varner again. He's slowing it down and just using his boxing a little more. Cerrone isn't quitting but Varner gets another takedown. 10-9 round for Varner as he moves ahead 29-28 on my card. Round 4 -Cerrone has to squint to see and he eats a high kick right off the start of the round. Body kick lands for Cerrone. Varner with yet another takedown and some more GnP. Solid elbow for Varner. Back to standing and a quick takedown again for Varner. Not as flashy of a round...but a save one to score for Varner. 10-9 Varner to move the card to 39-37. Round 5 - Varner with yet another double leg and he almost falls into a triangle. Cerrone is a tough dude, they're back to standing and he is still trying to walk Varner down. Takedown by Cerrone now and he is in half guard. Varner eats an illegal knee as he had more than 2 points on the ground and the fight is stopped to let the doctor take a look. Varner says he can't see so the fight is stopped. Official Scorecards: 49 - 46 Varner, 48 - 47 Cerrone and 49 - 46 Varner - Jamie Varner wins by split decision.

Buzzed.
Let’s hope the show gets a big ratings boost from its slot right after the All-Star Game… okay probably not.
For Canadians
I hate TSN. They can go suck on one.
It’s NEVER on the main channel live. It’s always either a regular season hockey game or in this case tennis.
Please TSN just give up the rights to one of your competitors because no one gets TSN2!
oops
yeah…. i have it watch it on a stream just to see free tv, great.
Hmm
Must’ve updated the schedule (or I read it wrong, my excuse is that I’m on pain killers which makes me judgment poor). Okay ignore my ranting.
Good to finally get a WEC card live.
How can you see the fights tonight if you don’t have the Verses channel? Is there a place on the net to watch them?
I don’t put it past him, but Donald’s another kind of animal.

An animal that will be walking out of San Diego w/ some new hardware in the form of the WEC Lightweight Championship. I’m probably going to get banned after that fight when Donald pulls it off.

What is this “buzz” of which you speak?

Jamie Varner is going to absolutely destroy Donald Cerrone tonight.
Varner by TKO and utter domination in the 2nd. He is WAY too much for Cerrone.
Varner will show why he is a top 10 LW in the world after tonight.
Why is Muira on the undercard?
Didn’t Hiromitsu Muira just give us one of the fights of the year? Didn’t he make the champ look like a chump as he judo thew him several times before gassing out? Muira should be getting more exposure. I’d love to see him against Brock Larson.
Quick picks
Only missed on Duarte and Sidelnikov last night. Excited for this card and totally torn on the main. Should be one hell of a fight.
Just doing straight up picks on my five favorite fights.
Cerrone over Varner
Faber over Pulver
Villefort over Campbell
Aldo over Perez
Miura over Garcia

I know this guy knows his sports because he has exposed chest hair.

NHL all-star game went into OT and a shootout, running to about 9:15 so sports soup was given its 30 minutes still, so VS won’t show it until this is over. I actually like sports soup because of the clips. the host I could do without
damn, guess i shoulda watched it. at least crosby wasnt playing, so we didnt have to hear them suck him off
it was pretty good. 22 goals in all. and yes, no cindy crosby was a relief.

I gave him round four only because after the last takedown Varner didn’t land anything from the top and Cowboy landed a lot of shots from his back. I don’t think a takedown that leads to no damage should be beneficial on the scorecard.
Varner controlled the location of the fight and positioning. Should could for more than strikes from the bottom, given that next to no one is ever hurt by those.
by D.Capitated on Jan 26, 2009 12:05 AM EST up reply actions

by D.Capitated on Jan 26, 2009 12:05 AM EST up reply actions
Thats fine, I’m just not in favor of the takedown and rest. I think its a valid strategy to fill up your gas tank to make something else happen but in and of itself I don’t think it should be beneficial on the scorecard, especially when the other guy is working from the bottom trying to set up submissions and landing strikes

Neither did Varner
That knee barely grazed his head…plus he was almost off his 3 points of contact and then slipped… it was a split second.

Even if Cerrone was set to lose that fight, he won a lot of fans the way he persevered and kept coming forward. The guy is straight up enigmatic, the further he gets into the fight. Varner, on the other hand, loses his luster as the fight wears on .
Alot of guys can't see in a fight
Tell Yuki Nakai about that and watch him call Varner to his face in front of his friends and family.

This happens after every illegal blow ends a fight. The chorus of guys acting like the victim here is wimping out. There’s a reason why the blow is illegal! It’s cause they cause too much damage EVEN IF THEY DON’T LOOK THAT BAD.
Cerrone looked shocked he had one judge called it for him. That tells you all you need to know about who was really winning the fight; Varner had no reason to ham it up.

What that means is that you are in no position to judge the damage that caused watching it from behind your keyboard.
When I see you take a knee to the eye in the cage and get back up for more, then you may have a point. You said it didn’t cause any damage with no real way to prove that.
If you are disappointed that the fight ended that way, then just say that. I wanted Cowboy to win too but that doesn’t mean I am going to cry about it by accusing Jamie of bitching out.
*sigh
I did just say that, and actually I watched it on a 52" Samsung flatscreen on VS HD, not “from behind my keyboard” lol Anyway Im just saying that because of his reaction, it lead me to believe it didn’t do any damage. I...
don’t think anyone here is in the position to determine if it DID or DID NOT do damage. That isn’t for people watching the fight to decide. It landed on the eye. So if he says he can’t see I don’t want him going out and getting blindsided and seriously hurt. I’m not in a position to say a guy is lying…

It wouldn't be such a big deal had Varner not made such a big deal about hugging and shit
As it was he was all about a spirited friendly battle. Until adversity. Then it was first ticket to the locker room when he thought he was gonna get an easy win out of it.
Gimme 1 Round!
He doesn't have to come out for the last 3 minutes
But I don’t have to respect him as a man either.
Gimme 1 Round!
Disappointing end, I think Varner was winning handily but the dramatics at the end left a sour taste for myself and the crowd I think.
If he would have simply said my eye was hurt by the knee I would have been fine with it but when he had trouble standing up on his own power to sit in his corner, walked around with a limp, etc it felt pretty lame.
I hope they have a rematch and soon.
I’m shocked anyone here cares that much. Maybe if Cerrone wanted a better shot at winning, he shouldn’t have thrown a knee at someone who’s down on the mat? Or maybe come in as a significantly better striker and wrestler than he had been the entire fight?
I can’t say I’m excited for the inevitable rematch. Varner looked gassed in the third and Cerrone about the same.
At least we learned something today: a knee above the eye can cause you to spontaneously dry heave on camera. People dogged Renzo for quitting vs. Shamrock, but this looked even worse to me. He couldn’t even figure out what particular ailment he was going to complain about.
LOL
I mentioned that one above. Renzo did the JC Van Damme Bloodsport “IM BLIND!!!” eyeblink. Varner did his best impersonation of the little girl from the Exorcist after being hit by that knee.
Gimme 1 Round!
Yea I mean nobody really does that. Do they???
The medical expertise here is overwhelming.
I don't know the last time I got kneed in the eye
Oh 5 or 6 times in a row. I cupped a handful of blood and threw it after the guy that finished what his buddies started. I could still see well enough to see my way to the car.
Gimme 1 Round!
Do you know precisely how the entire human body works? Can you delineate how the errant knee Varner took is the exact same and landed the exact same way as your knees? Is you physiology the exact same to where you and Varner would always have the exact same reaction? Or do different bodies react differently to stimuli?

I think he was being melodramatic, certainly, possibly emotional because of the stakes of the fight. However, I have no empirical evidence aside from tape of the knee strike and Varner’s comments. The strike hit his orbital bone/eye socket. Having been hit there before from an unexpected kick, it can be brutal (soccer game, guy tried a fancy bicycle kick, I was out cold)

in that fight he did. Maybe because his family’s reputation wasn’t on the line in the Shamrock fight. Renzo showed tremendous heart against Saku, but that dissappeared against Frank. the faber/pulver results just ran across the espn ticker, so the wec is starting to get a little more national recognition. cerrone definetly needs to work on his takedown defense, varner deserves an oscar, and jens needs to hang’em up. cant wait to see jose aldo fight again. all in all a pretty entertaining night of fights.

Eh, this is just like every other incident like this.
Bunch of trolls come out and act like its a put on, can’t be dissuaded, everyone should be Rocky and just keep on coming no matter what. Even with the Bonjanksy/Hari incident, where Hari should have been DQ’d for that shit, Remy gets pissed on. Oscar nominations abound.
If nobody else is gonna say it, I will.
Great night of fights. I really liked the action. It was varied and surprisingly skillful.
I thought that Aldo proved himself to be a friggin beast. He is incredibly fast, and more importantly, powerful for 145. To think that he has a black belt on top of his kickboxing game…that is crazy. In some ways he reminds me of Vitor circa 97’ only better.
Danillo Villefort looked very impressive and its always nice to see a no-gi judo toss of some sort (I’m a sucker for judo). His striking wasn’t up to snuff, but a strong judo and jiu-jitsu game is a great base for a fighter. We’ll have to see if he can take the step up in competition that he’ll be seeing soon.
Jorgenson over Gomez was a fun fight while it lasted, and that choke was unpleasant and gratifying all at once. It sorta reminded me of Dan Miller’s guillotine on Dave Phillips at the IFL 07 semi’s.
The Faber/Pulver scrap was disappointing but really should never have been made. It was sad to see all the crap that Pulver has had to deal with the last few months hit him all at once, especially when asked ‘are you still relevant in the 145 lbs. division?’
The Cerrone/Varner fight was pretty good prior to the foul. It was clearly unintentional and I’m not even gonna speculate about Varner’s condition. The rounds that preceded it were exciting. I walked away very impressed with Cerrone’s striking and durability, though his wrestling was very clearly lacking. I had the 2nd and 5th rounds going to Cerrone, and I could see somebody scoring the 4th for Cerrone, even if I wouldn’t agree with it.
All told, a great time. For a free card, it was a excellent deal.

Guys.
WEC 38 was an excellent event. I didn’t have to deal with any nonsense or ads because I watched the show delayed online without ads. In my eyes it was awesome.
Aldo and Villefort were impressive.
Pulver vs Faber should never have been made. Maybe Pulver should fight Aldo next? Faber should get his title shot.
Many mismatches and the one evenly matched fight was tainted by an illegal knee.
Far from a “GREAT” card, although it was free, so hard to complain I guess.
