Affliction: Day of Reckoning Live Results and Analysis

Affliction_day_of_reckoning_medium I know I've been away for a few days, but I'm back and ready to watch history unfold. I'll be liveblogging tonight's undercard results and I believe Michael Fagan will take over for the main portion of the card. So, expect results for the ENTIRE event, which means spoilers.

So join me back at 7 p.m. EST here as well cover all the action. And don't forget to hit that nifty Yahoo Buzz or Facebook button. We need your help to make this site a success.

Will Fedor continue to make history as the most dominant (heavyweight) fighter ever? Is tonight Andrei Arlovski's official ascension to the top? We'll find out tonight. See you in a few.

7:00 pm EST: And we're about to kick things off. I'm watching this on my new television in HD and I have to say, HDNet is seriously undervalued. This is a must-have for any MMA fan who takes comprehensive understanding of the sport seriously. Hats off to HDNet, but quit ignoring bloggers on Inside MMA.

8:46 pm EST: The baton has been handed off, and you're in the hands of Mike Fagan now.  We're enjoying the pre-fight hype show, which is surprisingly well done.  Haven't been paying 100% attention to it, but I haven't seen any specific mention of Yvel's checkered past.  Also, during the undercard, the arena looked embarassingly empty.  Hopefully Tom Atencio doesn't have to eat crow.

9:10 pm EST: I like the Pride-influenced introductions to start, but does it have to look like a third-rate version?  It does get me psyched, and this is a nice little card, especially when you consider the free undercard fights.  Also, nice to see Scott Ferrall getting more work...

9:17 pm EST: Looks like we'll get a nice look of hot babes at the fighter check-ins.  Arena seemed to have filled up a bit, but there's patches of empty seats all over.

Dan Lauzon vs. Bobby Green (lightweight)

Round 1: Herb Dean is our referee.  We'll see what Bobby Green's "Hood" style brings into this fight.  Green comes out aggressively, but Lauzon counters well.  Good pace so far.  Green corners Lauzon.  Low kick lands high, and we have a stoppage for a groin strike.  Lauzon appears to want to take the entire five minutes. Lauzon comes out with kicks and superman punch.  Clinch leads to Green on top.  Lauzon gives up his back, and Green suplexes him back to the mat.  Green escapes a triangle after sloppy strikes and throws ground 'n' pound from the guard.  Green gets up and calls Lauzon.  Clinch again, knee from Green lands low again.  Another groin strike from Green who is now complaining Lauzon is acting.  Dean deducts two points from Green.  Green ends up on top after a clinch and throws punches.  Lauzon has a hold of a heel hook, but Green is defending well.  Lauzon takes his back and locks on a choke.  Green taps with less than ten seconds in the fight!

Dan Lauzon submits Bobby Green with a rear naked choke at 4:55 of round 1.

Paul Buentello vs. Kirill Sidellnikov (heavyweight)

Round 1: Clinch leads to Babalu attempting to pull guard which Sokoudjou defends against.  Failed judo throw leads to Babalu taking his back.  Babalu pulls guard.  Big elbows from the Team Quest judo player.  Sokoudjou with the first judo throw I've seen in his MMA career.  Extended clinch along the ropes.  Competitive round.

Successful double leg from Sobral leads to big ground 'n' pound.  Sokoudjou looks lost on his back.  Sustained attack from Babalu.  McCarthy stops the bout to move it to the center.  Sokoudjou looks gassed.  Lazy sweep attempt gives Sobral half-guard.  Sokoudjou tries to scramble, and ends up in a Darce or anaconda choke.  Sokoudjou taps!

Round 1: Yvel lands a solid leg kick.  Head kick gets caught by Barnett.  Yvel throws punches before Barnett gets it to the floor in half guard.  Barnett with a kimura attempt from half guard.  Ground 'n' pound from Yvel after a scramble.  Barnett mounts after a kimura attempt.  Punches and elbows.  Vicious ground 'n' pound.  Yvel just covering up at this point.  Herb Dean could definitely step in at this point, but lets it go and the round ends.

BloodyElbow.com scores the round 10-8 Barnett.

Round 2: Yvel comes out guns blazing, but gets clinched and taken down.  Barnett straight into side control.  Barnett working for the kimura again.  Barnett takes full mount again.  Big elbow from Barnett. .  More elbows from Barnett.  Yvel active from the bottom.  Barnett switching his hips for an armbar, but Yvel ends up on top.  Yvel with a big left hand from the top.

BloodyElbow.com scores the round 10-9 Barnett.

Round 3: Yvel with strikes and gets taken down again by Barnett.  Mount right away.  Barnett throwing short elbows.  Yvel less active from bottom.  Barnett throwing punches, Yvel covering up again.  Yvel taps out from strikes!

Josh Barnett submits Gilbert Yvel due to strikes at 3:05 of round 3.

Fedor Emelianenko vs. Andrei Arlovski (heavyweight)

Speight misses several rights but lands a few inside leg kicks. Cooper lands a nice right and uppercut (twice) on the inside as Speight moves forward. Cooper is timing Speight's slow jab with his lead uppercut...lands a body shot. Coope is now dicating the action and taking the center. Speight lands a left hook. Cooper is going back to the well with setting up the uppercut. Speight shoots and is stuffed so he flops to butterfly guard. Cooper is up kicking Speight's legs.

BloodyElbow.com scores the round 10-9 Cooper.

Round 2: Speight misses with a left hook and lands a front kick. A few slapping left hooks land from Speight. Cooper goes back to the uppercut but misses. Speight is landing on the outside but with nothing potent. Speight lands an excellent overhand right after an exchange where Cooper overcommits. Cooper lands a nasty body shot with a left and Speight is clearly hurt but recovers. Cooper on top in half guard working GNP. Speight recaptures full guard. Speight is working an overhand rubberguard grip to hit an armbar but it goes nowhere. The fighters get back to their feet. Cooper lands a vicious inside right uppercut a la Arlovski vs. Matyushenko. Speight is out cold.

Cooper officially stops Speight at 4:10 in the second round.

Albert Rios vs. Antonio Duarte (featherweight)

Rios' entrance is reminiscent of a MMA Shock G. Put me in as a fan of this gentleman. Big John is back refereeing.

Round 1: Rios fakes a shot but eats a leg kick from Duarte. Rios throws a left straight right to the body. Rios works a single off the ropes, switches to a double and lands in Duarte's butterfly guard.  Duarte uses the corner to get back to his feet. Duarte lands a monster right that floors Rios. Rios trying to find ways to close the distance. Rios lands another double leg into side control, but Duarte is back up. Fighters exhcange decent leg kicks. Duarte throwing better combos but missing quite a bit. Rios shoots again and is deep but Duarte is pummeling much better this time. Duarte shrugs off the takedown after the switch to a single failed. The round ends with little damage being applied to either fighter but Rios is busier and pushes the pace.

BloodyElbow.com scores the round 10-9 Rios.

Round 3: Fighters land outside leg kicks on each other, Rios getting the better of them. Duarte lands a few more kicks now. Duarte is moving a little better this round and checks a kick. Imagine if this fight took place under the UFC banner?????????

It is hard to believe , but If Arlovski was still in the UFC and somehow Fedor fought AA under the UFC banner………This PPV would be the biggest to date, most likely.

I am predicting that this PPV does a little better than the first…..but nothing great. UFC 93 in Ireland probably did more PPV buys than Day of Reckoning will do

Just shows you what a powerful brand the UFC has built. I would bet if the SAME card was promoted under the UFC name the PPV buys would be one of the highest to date.

What do you guys think??

by fightfan on Jan 24, 2009 2:22 PM EST reply actions

I think if the UFC ever get Fedor, that card will be the biggest to date – no matter who the opponent is for Fedor.

I think this card will do less buys than Banned… Its sandwhiched between two UFC PPVs and at around $45 a pop, people really have to think of their wallets… especially when they can get it ‘other’ ways…

by constantin3 on Jan 24, 2009 6:01 PM EST reply actions

I agree. First one did around 100k buys, right? I’d say this one does about 75k, tops.

by Tim Burke on Jan 24, 2009 6:04 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t understand why you’d think Fedor would have the biggest PPV in UFC history when Anderson Silva couldn’t break 400k.

by cyph on Jan 24, 2009 7:18 PM EST up reply actions

Andersen Silva is the perfect comparison because he sets the best case scenario in terms of his dominance. I think that hardcore fans overestimate the importance of being undefeated. The trinity of Chuck-Tito-Randy all have fairly embarrassing and/or devastating losses on their record.

Interesting. I added the little facebook thing to my page. Cool feature, hope it brings some new people to the site.

You know im really excited for this card. It’s a shame that i couldn’t get any of my friends to watch it and Hooters, BW3 or any bar is not showing it. Put UFC behid it and it’s sold out. I know it’s a prelim fight but it looks like no one is there.

I was thinking that too.

I suspect all the people who actually paid for a ticket (less than 5,000) to be in the arena soon.

PPV BUYS

I’m not buying this PPV, I think the UFC is to ahead of the game and supporting other organization will only slow down the UFC control and as fans the best way to ever really see all the best fighters in the world fight each other. I think Golden Boy and M1 are all about trying to make money and jump on the band wagon now that the UFC has set up the sport. I love the Fedor vs the pit bull fight but that it.

Well for Affliction

you also get massively overpaid. In theory, Afflictions acts as both the sponsor and promoter. Besides that, the exposure the UFC gives allows them to pay you less so Affliction has had to pay each fighter more….. which is why people complain about Affliction’s business model.

If true, this is Vitor’s ticket back to the top and into money. He needed this bigtime.

Who could possibly care about Silva-Leites if we can get Silva-Vitor in April? Vitor has to be considered top 5 at 185 now.

by Michael Rome on Jan 24, 2009 11:00 PM EST up reply actions

Really?

Because he knocked out a very old Matt Lindland? I don’t think he can walk in the UFC and get a shot – give him Nate Marquardt while Silva-Leites happens, then have the winners face in August. Beautiful.

But um…there are 30 minutes left in the broadcast…if this fight goes the full 5 rounds that is 29 minutes…and they still don’t have Fedor in there yet, and have to do introductions…and would have to read the scorecards.

Anyone else a bit…concerned?

Absolutely he was looking impressive, but “dominating” etc. is completely overblown. It wasn’t even out of the first round yet – I think people need to realize that. Not to mention that as soon as the opening appeared, Fedor finished him.

by The_Gaijin on Jan 25, 2009 12:11 AM EST up reply actions

I agree

A title fight is 25 minutes long. Losing 3 out of 25 isn’t such a big deal. If Fedor got severely rocked or beat down then maybe. But Arvlovski didn’t give Fedor the chance to get his rhythm. lol

You can’t expect Fedor to get the timing right away. He got lumped up in the Cro Cop fight too.

by zeroword on Jan 24, 2009 11:59 PM EST up reply actions

I really don’t think that it was the fact that he was losing in the standup. It was what Brent mentioned earlier: something in his eyes and demeanor changed. I hadn’t ever seen that from Fedor. Not against Fujita, not against Hunt, and not against Mirko after that rough left. Something was very different in this fight.

He still won, but I can’t help but think that something new just happened in the ring.

Commenting on BE is inversely porportional to PPV buys. Lots of people flipping back and forth between live streams and the forum. YAMMA got a million comments too.

by Ubernoober on Jan 25, 2009 12:01 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah...

I said that earlier. I do the majority of liveblogs here for our staff and you can tell when people are paying for shows (as they usually have friends over…or whatever and aren’t paying attention to a computer) or when they’re bumming a stream off the net. There are always more comments on the shows without a ton of buys…

Freddie Roach has to be pissed....

He’s been training AA in standup this whole time and he was winning. The second AA went for a MMA move, he gets ko’d

Best American MMA Card Ever?

If you thought UFC 92 was FotY, then it was better than the best card of 2008 at the very least.

by smoogy on Jan 25, 2009 12:02 AM EST reply actions

err, I guess it would be CotY or EotY

No way, 92 was overrated. 3-4 of the fights could charitably be described as “B-level kickboxing”, Wessel vs. Hardonk and Andy vs. Hamill in particularly being ugly as hell.

Full disclosure, I was rooting for Lauzon, Rogerio, Babalu, Belfort and Fedor, so I’m pretty happy with how it turned out on that end of matters, as Tito might say.

by smoogy on Jan 25, 2009 12:08 AM EST up reply actions

Better than 93, not as good as 91 or 92. But a really solid card nonetheless.

I have to give you props though – you were spot on.

Who the fuck would have imagined that Andrei would be foolish enough to try a flying fucking knee on fucking Fedor.

by mmalogic on Jan 25, 2009 12:06 AM EST up reply actions

Had Arlovski been a bit more methodical, he would have won, no doubt. Fedor looked confused (as much as he can look like an emotion). I couldn’t even see Andrei’a hands on my stream TV.

too bad title fights are 25 mins long. Grats to Arlovski for 3.5/25

by Sokonojudo on Jan 25, 2009 12:04 AM EST up reply actions

The announcing was bad and the stuff between fights horrid, so I ignored it and did other things. The actual fights though were entertaining. Yvel showed incredible heart in the one flat out mismatch, and everything else was competitive with lots of back and forth. Arlovski’s hands were a quantum leap ahead of Fedor’s, and then he throws that flying knee. Roach must have shook his head in shame. He had it. Even Andrei knew it when he woke up.

by spectaa on Jan 25, 2009 12:12 AM EST up reply actions

Exactly. Fedor weighed in at 230, Arlovski was 237. Brock and Carwin are “huge” but even someone like Velasquez is like 245lbs.

It’s not like he’s never fought a HW before and he’s now finished the two former long-time HW champs from the UFC.

by The_Gaijin on Jan 25, 2009 12:13 AM EST up reply actions

Mir can also come in around 250.

by Derek Suboticki on Jan 25, 2009 12:17 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah and Gonzaga as well, but ~20 lbs at HW is not that much of a difference in my opinion. I think the fact that he’s so light on his feet makes up for a lot of the size difference, plus he probably hits harder than anyone at HW, including Lesnar.

Jay Hieron vs. Jason High

From Sherdog’s Play by Play:

High, stalking early, lands a high kick that is partially blocked. Hieron flurries back with a combination that backs off high. Heiron loands a crushing lead left hook that freezes High before he crumples to the mat. Hieron follows up with punches before referee Herb Dean intervenes. The official time is 1:04 of the first round.

Was it shown on HDnet or the PPV? I thought I saw all of both, but I guess not.

by Rundownloser on Jan 25, 2009 1:24 AM EST up reply actions

Great card, thoroughly enjoyed it.

Lots of great moments, although I think everyone was concerned for Lindland.

Fedor, Belfort, Barnett, Sobral, all looked great and continue to be the best prospects affliction has.

I’d like to see Belfort fight Mousasi, more than Mousasi vs Babalu.

The next card should be great.

And BJ/GSP coming up, greaaaaat month.

… goes to Jay Hieron. Even over what Fedor and Belfort did. I was there to see it. It took place after the main event. My god what a brutal knockout and vicious shots afterwards.

Andre thought Fedor was going to shoot.....

Andre had Fedor in trouble, or at least he thought he did. When he hit Fedor with the nice combo and front leg kick that pushed Fedor up against the ropes, Andre expected some kinda of shoot or charge forward, thus he left his feet for a flying knee to end it…..I guess Fedor wasnt in as much trouble as he thought. Fight over.
