Thiago Alves 16-3 vs Mike Swick 13-2 in February?
According to an interview with Marcus Davis at MMAWeekly.com:
"Swick’s got Thiago Alves now coming up in February, so he’s got to get by him. If he does not get by him maybe that’s something the UFC will do is be like ‘Okay let’s have Marcus fight Swick.’ And then, you know, at some point I’d like to go fight with Thiago again."

but why
why remove the only threat to GSP crown. if swick wins, who will be next in line for the title fight? i dont think swick will win, but the off chance he does, it screws everything up. this is a very strange move by thiago.

yeah, well mmabay is reporting....
That Alves, Randy couture, Urijah Faber, Dan Severn, Mike Tyson, and The Ultimate Warrior have been booked for a no holds barred steel cage ladder match in February so I really doubt he’ll have time to fight Swick too.

i remember reading about this a few weeks ago, but still haven’t heard any confirmation about it. one would think if they were going to fight in feb, that it would have been announced already. i’m sure alves would rather wait and get his shot at gsp if gsp wins against bj, but maybe the ufc wants to make sure alves can make weight one more time, just to make sure he doesn’t screw up a title fight. with him walking around at over 200lbs at 5’9, i’m think they might worry about that alot.

Seems like Thiago just wants to stay active and he thinks he can win easily. Though with this fight Swick may be the bigger fighter and Alves wont be able to bully him around like he did Hughes. And Swick is a better striker than Koscheck so theres that

if that’s the case and alves is overlooking swick, he could be in for a rude awakening, but this is just assumption.

Swick is a Scrub
There is no reason for Alves to fight a scrub like Swick. They are building Alves as the next threat against GSP, no way they will put him in against Swick.

Hey now! Swick has not done anything horribly impressive in recent memory. But I like his odds to give Alves a run for his money. While maybe not the force that he once hyped to be, calling Swick a scrub is not necessary. If he gets destroyed in his next couple fights expect an apology…

Its all about money. Fighters can’t be waiting 8-12 months for their next payday. Titles are nice, but fights pay the bills.
