UFC Primetime: St. Pierre vs. Penn Live Blog

You may be asking why I am live blogging a television show. It's a reasonable query, but consider this:
White was in the final stages of helping put together the debut episode of UFC Primetime, a three-episode docudrama that premieres on Spike TV tonight at 10 p.m. ET. The series follows Georges St. Pierre and B.J. Penn through the final weeks of preparation for their champion vs. champion clash at UFC 94 on Jan. 31. White and company were in the process of editing the first episode a mere 24 hours before it was set to air, and they hadn't even begun the voiceover work yet.
"We got tapes in today," White said, with more than a hint of urgency in his voice. White's mood was all too familiar to those of us in the media: This was clearly a man under deadline pressure.
"I mean, we got tapes in today," he reiterated. "Stuff that was shot today, we got in today, downloaded into the machine and start editing. You gotta put it together, and it's ... dude, I'm telling you right now. You know what we've done over the last nine years in building this business? I've never been so stressed out as I am working on this show."
UFC Primetime is different not just in depth or breadth of coverage, but in the spirit of new media it pushes detailed information with a true premium placed on speed. In that respect, the show appears to be very much the first product of 21st century information dispersion. When you combine that reality with what appears to be a show with quite a bit to unpack, I felt it only right to start matters off with a live blog which will follow the twists and turns of the show in real time as the community offers their take simultaneously.
It took a fight like BJ vs. GSP to help bring a show like UFC Primetime to life and I think reverse is likely true as well.
Join me at 10 pm EST right here. I suspect this show will kick hype for this main event fight and for the series into high gear. And I can barely wait.
*****
10:02: The "to the death" intro off the break grabs your attention and sets the tone. And immediately a quick contrast is set to help build rivalry, something GSP has heretofore shrugged. I also get the sense right away (and have had the hunch) this is more Penn's vanity project and desire.
10:06: "When are you going to see another Michael Jordan?" indeed after seeing those leaps over the hurdles. WTF.
10:08: The footage of Penn telling GSP who the real fighter was and into the rap song overlay of Penn jogging was utterly masterful. It's clear right away this is a step up in production from previous UFC/Spike TV ventures.
10:09: Penn is making himself the villain right away and unabashedly so. He also gets to the heart of the best argument against GSP: "it ain't easy" but once you get through, you can make him quit. I'm not endorsing that opinion necessarily, but I don't deny its meaning for Penn.
10:13: "The will to win" + hardest work possible in training = BJ's reason to believe he can win this fight. That's his argument: "the will to win" to success.
10:15: First quarter of the program: serious strengths in setting the scene with fighter identity and their relationship to one another. It's also a plus to see Dana White's analysis more naturally. He does so much promoting you lose perspective that White can actually offer valuable insight into fighters and fights.
10:20: And we're back...to Montreal. GSP pulls the blue collar card to help prove grit and perserverance.
10:22: Whoever is in charge of incorporating the music into scenes is excellent and knows how to incorporate theme, the fighters background and even tastes.
10:29: The conversation between White and Regan was probably not staged but certainly looked so. That was my least favorite part of the show thus far even if it was instructive.
My first take away was that it was too short. What they were developing takes more than three 30 minute installments. It deserves serious attention and that takes time. But I realize this series is just getting started. It will obviously evolve over time.
Optimistically, though, I will say this is the sort of show this sport deserves and needs. This is the antidote to "The Ultimate Fighter" reality show that has devolved into a game show version of "Lord of the Flies". The beauty of TUF originally was that it showed people who fighters really are. And now with UFC Primetime, we circle back to that original discovery. This is the sort of footage you show new fans, interested parties and MMA skeptics. It teaches succinctly everything we, the fan, already know about these fighters and this sport and does so artfully. I say kudos to the UFC for getting it right while preserving its entertainment integrity. The sport deserves this kind of series and its further evidence that any fan who cares about MMA must recognize it is the hitch of the UFC that we must tie our wagon if we want this and better. Not in full commitment or unconditionally, but in good faith. They are our best hope.

I liken how I just saw an affliction ad on Spike
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
awww
shit… It is 10:00 on my computer.
BJ PENN vs. GSP II…. bring it on!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why are all my favorite athletes named BJ? Do you think I can call Penn 'Beej'?
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
Toronto apparently isnt so bad
I still complain when it’s cold though. It can’t be worse weather then Buffalo though.
Watch
all of this hype be for nothing, and one of these guys gets TKO’d or submitted in 2 minutes :(
Not at all, but with this fight being huge, you would want to see at least a round of fighting.

It's good to know GSP is the creepy rich guy in the club who doesn't drink but just plays grab ass all night.

The shot driving through the tunnel before the break was cool.

Yup
Does that make you question BJ winning?

wtf?
Its only 30 minutes.
25 days of filming and we get 90 minutes, but then a regular countdown is 3 days of training for 60 minutes.
Can’t wait till next wednesday!
Usually it’s 3 days and the main event gets a half hour.

Rap song when Penn was running...
Anybody know what was the song that was playing when Penn was jogging??
was only able to catch bits and pieces of this, but thumbs to the ufc crew for getting henry rollins to do the voiceover work.
Deosn't really sound like him to me.
But I still like him better than the Countdown show guy.

Staged
i think the who busing bj on vacation was staged. funny how dana had the cameras on him the exact same time as they were on jd at home. why are the cameras with jd when hes not around bj and why are the cameras with dana when hes in a limo ride? nobody gives a frick about either of them. so i think it was staged. other than that i was a good show. much like 24/7 has some very intreging things to watch. i predicted manny would destroy ocscar just by watching how their training camps where from the 24/7 show. don’t see that with this fight though. both are getting great training in.
also henry f’n rollins is the doing the voice over! cant get better than that.
Hey Luke
I just wanted to correct the part of where Dana White was talking on the phone with one of BJ’s brothers. It was JD instead of Regan. I know its kinda confusing with all the brothers and them looking sorta alike. :P

I think I heard Penn say that Dana White was like an older brother to him. That was a strange moment. I liked the suit size stuff for GSP. I don’t think that he was putting in 18 hour work days as a garbage collector. I felt like the show was too short.
"Stop smiling you are about to be punched in the face !"
I think 3 parts is perfect also. There is often a lot of fluff in the 4 part HBO pieces…hearing the documentary guy go on and on about Manny’s dog, etc. I feel like this gives you a tease, and after 3 episodes people will be itching for the fight. It’s not a season of lost, it’s a preview show. I think the point is to leave you unsatisfied.
word.....
Jones/Calzage and Pac/Delahoya could have been edited way down, there was a ton of filler, not quite as bad as Arlovski 360 where we talked to his jewler and dentist etc. but still a bit drawn out and forced. Prime time leaves you wanting more which is IMO the point of a show like this..
YAMATO DAMASHII
hell yeah
this show was bad ass, I watched it on DVR then tried going to bed! Im ready for this fight
all you gotta do is...
I watched right before going to bed and couldn’t fall asleep for like 45 mins – my mind was racing with scenario’s of how this fight would go and so on. Then for most of the night I had dreams about the fight – WTF? Was this planned by Zuffa?

Penn is not training and suffering in his camp like GSP is. A 5 day vacation right before his fight? Peaking faze? Baloney. He’s not gonna be able to handle the beast that is GSP. I had to go put 100 on GSP after this before the line changes as a result of seeing a lazy Penn.
Well this was filmed in December so it wasn’t exactly right before the fight. Also he said that he just wants to rest up a little bit before going hard again. And im pulling for BJ on this one. :P
by bigislandboi808 on Jan 15, 2009 2:03 AM EST up reply actions
Dana has said that it was filmed more recently than that. Sure, some if it is from December, but we don’t have a clear timeline about when each event went down.

tapering is common in sports where you need to be at your peak for an event every once in a while. Taking a whole week off is a little different, but we don’t know when that took place, or how common it is for BJ lately.
Agreed.
According to BJ’s trainer, the 5 days off occurred last week through the beginning of this week. Seems like a strange time for a break. If BJ has really trained for 5 months without any breaks (very, very hard to believe), then his camp isn’t designing their training schedule correctly.
I believe Penn is training very hard, even with the 5 day break.

UFC countdown was great. Definitely a major step up in production quality (the poster is epic as well). It is a great move for the sport to introduce these guys as top notch athletes instead of “NHB cage fighters” . Maybe it will open some peoples eyes.
BTW, does anyone get Spike in HD?
Lucky bastard :P
I dont know wtf is up with DISH not having Spike HD yet! I think only DirectTV has it right now. >:(
Just wish it was an hour long since there are commercials in it. The HBO 24/7 is so sweet since there aren’t any and you stay so focused on the story. Oh well, maybe they’ll change it down the line…

Awesome show. I’m very impressed with its performance.
Anyway, I think the overwhelming reaction that the show should be an hour long means the show is working. Leaving you wanting more each week will only increase the amount of people that want to see this fight. If the show maintains its strong showing, this could be a very big PPV.

I really enjoyed the show, I was a bit upset that it was only 30 minutes.
It would have been nice to see more of Georges family, but maybe his family is not as involved in his mma career as BJ’s family is.
The differences between the two fighters is clear and I like how the viewer can become torn between the two – although I am a die-hard BJ Penn fan, I will try not to be too upset if GSP wins.

Did anyone else find Dana's presence unnecessary?
Seriously, it felt as though that the Dana bits didn’t need to be there. I was so into Primetime for the first 20 minutes or so, but the drama that they inserted into the end was unnecessary. Sure, Dana should be concerned that both of these fighters are in peak shape for this fight as it is huge for the UFC, but BJ’s vacation shouldn’t be a major plot point of the show.
I don’t think this fight needs any “zomg, BJ is on vacation” drama to be successful. Showing their personalities and training methods was interesting enough. The fact that it seems that BJ’s vacation would be a major plot point for next episode is even more off-putting. I mean, this is obviously manufactured by the UFC as well. BJ knew that camera crews were going to be around and Dana would HAVE to know if they changed locations for BJ’s vacation, so the fact that he’s acting surprised is lame.
What I’m trying to say is that this fight doesn’t need any manufactured hype. Both of these fighter’s personalities and training is what’s going to sell the fight. Showing how bad bother of these fighters want this fight is what’s going to sell the fight. The first 20 minutes did a masterful job at this, but the last 10 kind of dropped the ball.
Agreed
They better make up for it big time on the next one. I wanna see BJ training and running up Volcanos sweating like a madman. Hype the fight dont make ppl say oh GSPs gonna win easy. Seeing Dana so much kinda killed the mood for me. I want to see the fighters!

Excellent production. Nice camera work, Henry Rollins and well placed music.
Do any of us not know that GSP trains hard and that BJ has the tendency to take breaks? Yet I was still held to the show.
I like how they made such a big production out of BJ taking a few days off, but portrayed GSP going out, as almost a good thing. I don’t think either will be any sort of factor.
If you're not submitting, you're just rolling around with another guy.
Whether or not you think BJ taking 5 days off from the end of last week to the beginning of this week, there’s a fundamental difference between BJ’s and GSP’s scenarios.
Penn was taking a 5 day vacation from training, heading out of town to relax and recharge. GSP went to a club to hang out with friends after a day of training, and never altered his camp or took any extra days off.
by Hardcharger on Jan 15, 2009 12:07 PM EST up reply actions
I’m not saying that isn’t what happened, what I am saying, is neither scenario is a big deal. However, they tried to play it as though it is.
If you're not submitting, you're just rolling around with another guy.
Possibly/probably not. However, for a guy who’s not trained up to the expected level in the past, taking 5 days off when you’re 3 weeks out may not be the best bet. Maybe his trainers aren’t scheduling his training correct. Maybe BJ is just not working as hard as he needs to.

Maybe he is respecting his body and trying to stay injury free.

Dana’s presence wasn’t annoying so much as I feel it was unnecessary. The part where Dana is talking about each fighter was okay, but the other part about checking up on BJ and the whole limo/walking around in NY and what not – was unnecessary. Just glad Joe Rogan wasn’t on there doing his usual hype monologue.
Why wouldn’t Joe Silva be the one calling and checking up on BJ & GSP? Why don’t we ever see Joe Silva in the Countdown’s? He is the matchmaker.

I didn’t agree with bj’s assesment of gsp being a frontrunner. bj was the one who was ahead in their 1rst fight and gsp was the one who came from behind and won (just barely). other than that i loved the show, wish it was longer as well and defintley think that dana and bj himself are trying to make bj come across as the heel.
I guess since Tito is no longer taking the role of heel – BJ is the new heel?

I dont feel that way, i just think thats the way the show portrayed him to be. ive seen fans on other sights say that they thought gsp came across as the heel, being a machine like fighter with no personality. i think whomever someone is picking or rooting for to win this fight will view these shows in 2 different ways, with 2 different viewpoints.
backround music
can somebody please tell me the backround music they played when st pierre walks into the club and its french rap backround music? i think the artist is “sans pression” however i dont know for sure.. if someone could tell me the artist and the song name i would appreciate it very much.. you can email me dipcetta@aol.com thank you
Song 25 minutes in
Does anyone know the song about 25 minutes into the show where they go back to the gym in Montreal? The narrator starts off saying "Friday morning in Montreal, BJ Penn may have returned to camp in Hilo, but at the Tristar gym…he never left..
It’s a bluesy rock song.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
