Bloody Elbow Exclusive: Antwain Britt to Face Former IFL Standout Jamal Patterson at UWC 5: Man O' War on February 21st

Bloody Elbow can exclusively confirm with word directly from the UWC that Mid-Atlantic rising star Antwain "The Juggernaut" Britt will lock horns with Team Renzo Gracie and IFL standout Jamal "The Suit" Patterson in a light heavyweight fight as the co-main event on UWC 5: Man O' War on February 21st at the Patriot Center on the George Mason University campus in Fairfax, VA.

Patterson is a black belt in jiu-jitsu under the legendary Renzo Gracie and holds notable wins over Matt Horwich and Chris Baten. Folks who kept up with the New York Pitbulls during their run with Renzo will remember Patterson for his fantastic jiu-jitsu as well as considerable athleticism. Britt is a very heavy-handed striker with very good wrestling skills out of Hybrid Academy in Vriginia Beach, VA. He has notable wins over Wayne Cole and Terry Cohens.

This fight is not only a fantastic clash of styles, but important for the up-and-comers of the light heavyweight division. Both fighters want to assert themselves as serious contenders in this division and need a credible challenger to take the next step. Given how significant each of them are as challengers, the winner of this fight stands to gain prestige as a serious mover and shaker in the light heavyweight prospect ranks. In short, to move to the next stage in their careers they need a win as meaningful as this to jump into the mix. The match-up is great and the stakes are high.

Disclosure: I am an employee of UWC, so take everything I say with a grain of salt. However, this show will be streamed live over the Internet at Sherdog.com for free. I encourage everyone to watch as the UFC event will have ended and the fights on UWC 5 will help determine the future stars of MMA.

Press release announcing the fight after the jump.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

UWC Announces Antwain Britt vs Jamal Patterson Light Heavyweight Clash

The Next Generation of MMA Champions Featured at UWC: MAN O' WAR Hits the Patriot Center on February 21st

Washington, DC - East coast regional Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) powerhouse the UWC - Ultimate Warrior Challenge announced today the signing of a fight between The Ultimate Fighter veteran Antwain "The Juggernaut" Britt and Jamal "The Suit" Patterson. The light heavyweight bout (205lbs) will be the Co-Main Event for UWC 5: MAN "O" WAR, which will be held February 21st, 2009 at the George Mason University Patriot Center Arena in Fairfax, VA.

"The UWC has two major priorities: finding the next young stars of tomorrow and bringing world-class match-ups to the mid atlantic region and east coast," said UWC CEO S. Marcello Foran. "D.C. fans already know Antwain Britt is talented and Jamal Patterson is one of the best submission fighters on the East coast, so we're looking forward to a really competitive contest. We believe this fight means something for the light heavyweight division, and is guaranteed to be action packed. D.C. area fans can expect to see two of the fastest rising stars in the Light Heavyweight division go at it on February 21st."

Antwain "The Juggernaut" Britt (8-0), a returning UWC veteran, fights out of Hybrid Academy of Martial Arts in Virginia Beach, VA. He was featured on the most recent season of Spike TV's The Ultimate Fighter. He has won all of his fights by Technical Knock Out and has a reputation as having incredible athleticism and knockout power as well as being one of the rising stars of the Light Heavyweight division.

Jamal "The Suit" Patterson (4-2), a jiu-jitsu black belt under the legendary Renzo Gracie, fights out of the Gracie Academy in New York, New York. A former football player at Colgate University and All American wrestler out of Blair Academy, Patterson is an accomplished but young veteran who was a light heavyweight standout in the International Fighting League (IFL). He has won all of his fights by submission, including two over UFC fighter and former IFL Middleweight Champion Matt Horwich. Featured in the New York Times, Patterson is known as "The Suit" due to his day job with an orthodontics firm.

"This fight is what the UWC is all about -- building the champions of tomorrow. Both of these guys are great up and comers in MMA, but each needs a good win to keep their careers moving in the right direction. Britt has been itching for a step up in competition and Patterson wants to solidify his name with a win against a rising star like Britt. The match has everything a fan could ask for: significance, great athleticism and skill " said Foran. "I can't wait to see if Patterson’s jiu-jitsu technique will be able to overcome the vicious knock-out power of 'The Juggernaut.' The fans do not want to miss this fight February 21st."

Britt vs Patterson will be the co-headlining fight on the card, along with Mike "The Hulk" Easton vs Chase Beebe for the first ever UWC bantamweight world championship. Easton (6-1), a two time UWC veteran fighting out of Maryland’s Team Lloyd Irvin along with UFC star Brandon "The Truth" Vera, will take on Beebe (11-3), a former WEC bantamweight champion fighting out of HIT Squad under Marc Fiore, Robbie Lawler, and former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes.

UWC: MAN "O" WAR" will be held Saturday February 21, 2009 at the George Mason University Patriot Center Arena in Fairfax, Virginia. Tickets for the event are available via Ticketmaster and the show will be streamed live over the Internet on Sherdog.com. For more information, visit "http://www.uwcmma.com" www.uwcmma.com.

Woah. That will be an excellent fight indeed. I hope to be there.

One nitpick: they list Britt at 8-0. Have they, like so many others, forgotten the YAMMA?

Have they, like so many others, forgotten the YAMMA?

Can’t blame them if they did.

I wonder how far away Antwain is from being on a UFC card. Sounds like a good prospect.

It’s a good question. That fight was only one round as I understand it (I still haven’t seen it) and Britt was told all of the short round fights were exhibition matches, so he doesn’t count it.

by Luke Thomas on Jan 12, 2009 5:11 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

From what I heard, he won the round. Would he have counted it if he won? And who did he beat at TUF tryouts? Does he count that one? Sherdog has his record at 6-1, with two wins and the YAMMA loss missing, what wins are they missing?

by szucconi on Jan 12, 2009 5:18 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He doesn’t count the TUF win. Apparently he’s had fights that Sherdog missed.

by Luke Thomas on Jan 12, 2009 5:19 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I am aware that sherdog doesn’t contain all fights, but I am wondering who he beat and how he beat them.

Not sure, but I will look into it.

Combate Extremo

I know that he fought and won in the Dominican Replublic on December 21st. There was a training partner of mine down there for amatuer fights through the Combate Extremo and Gladiator Fight Club promotions.

I’d love to watch this, but I hope Sherdog’s stream isn’t garbage this time. The audio was absolutely sickening my stomach with all the ups and downs it was going through.

Give it a second chance.

I definitely will, Luke. I’m hoping the audio problems are fixed so I can watch it without muting sound.

FWIW, I didn’t have audio in my headset until the third fight, so needless to say my job was not that fun at the beginning of the show.

Hopefully Sherdog doesn’t butcher this one as badly as the FuryFC stream last month

LOL

Oh yeah… I forgot about that. Unwatchable, so I tuned into CRFights, which at least worked, but was terrible.

“Vriginia Beach” typo.

I like the way they are getting their show out there, I would never have heard of them if it was not for Luke.

old news

MMAOpinion.com broke the news yesterday straight from Antwain…

I for one am looking forward to this fight!

Hence the word “confirm”.

by Luke Thomas on Jan 12, 2009 7:18 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And Britt had given them the wrong word about Van Arsdale previously, so confirmation works here.

I love the part where you say

that these fights will ‘determine the future stars of MMA.’ Funny how Zuffa doesn’t go after regional shows that don’t decide to try to fuck around nationally or sign their fighters. Anyone who wants one organization for all the sport’s top talent (like me) understands the vital importance of orgs like UWC for developing talent, and I dare say the brass at said organization agrees with me.

Next step would be local TV contracts and decent local media coverage. Ah, to dream…

by subo on Jan 12, 2009 7:35 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

UWC has TV deals with Comcast and Fox Sports Net.

by Luke Thomas on Jan 12, 2009 8:45 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not his fault the previous 4 opponents that he was supposed to face didn’t come through…lol

Local TV contracts would be positive for the smaller scene of MMA.

That’s one hell of an opponent for Britt. His toughest test to date in my mind.

As always, I’m super excited to see Britt fight. What a great card this will be.

Oh, and it looked like Britt was in Krzysztof Soszynski’s corner at the TUF finale. Was that him? You mention in this article that Britt is still training with the Hybrid Academy, but I didn’t know if in Britt’s brief time on TUF if he had struck up an friendship with Krzysztof that had led him to head west.

I don’t know if its with TQT, but I do know he is flirting with the idea of training out west.

by Luke Thomas on Jan 12, 2009 8:44 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Who is your source for that? That is completely false! and I will quote…“No Truth at all”

by NCSAR on Jan 12, 2009 9:38 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He may go train with somewhere for a few weeks but he is not going to leave Hybrid. They are family.

Check out UWC if you can...

I live in the DC area, and saw a local rebroadcast of a UWC event last Spring. While it is a regional organization, the quality of many of the fights was very good. Lots of knockouts, some mismatches, but some good technique, a couple strong decision contests, and generally a great bunch of fights. If I didn’t work nights, I’d certainly go check out the Feb. 21 event. Also, the guys behind this promotion really care about developing an audience, as I wrote to them to find out about UWC, and got a personal e-mail back from the promotional team.

Really Excited

I took the suggestion of a few folks here and wrote them about group tickets for my meetup group. I think the Easton vs. Beebe fight is going to be fantastic! What more could a girl ask for?

I'm the kind of girl who loves to watch a GOOD fight!
