Official 2008 Bloody Elbow Reader Awards

Ufc83crowd

The year's over, and it's time for the obligatory awards articles.  Some of our friends in the blogosphere may not enjoy them, but I surely do.  Now's your chance to participate in the 2008 Bloody Elbow Reader Awards.

Here's how it works.  We have 14 categories to vote on.  You may choose up to 3 candidate in each category, in descending order.  Your first place vote gets 5 points, second place gets 3 points, third place gets 1 point.  You are not obligated to use all 3 of your choices.  If you only use two, they will be awarded 5 and 3 points respectively (i.e. you can't award 5 points and 1 point), and a single vote gets 5 points.

HOW TO VOTE

Send an e-mail to me titled "2008 Reader Awards."  Vote in order of how the awards are listed and using this format:

Fighter of the Year

Bob Sapp
Blake Bowman
Kalib Starnes

Fight of the Year

Starnes vs. Quarry
Sapp vs. Kinnikuman
Barnett vs. Monson

Votes are listed in descending order (so your 5 point pick will be on the top).

ALL VOTES ARE FINAL!  Do not e-mail me asking to change your picks!  *EDIT* Votes in the comments section will be counted, but it is highly encouraged to use e-mail.  Definitely use the comments for discussion!

Voting will be open until January 8th at midnight Pacific time.

Award categories after the break.  Contenders listed are not exclusive, they are just a thorough recap of the best candidates I remember.  Use the comments to introduce additional candidates.

FIGHT OF THE YEAR

I had a very hard time with this one…

by banter on Jan 1, 2009 5:54 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

A couple notes/nitpicks

-Promotion of the year is a pretty pointless award. There will be plenty of praise for the UFC with or without it.

-Scott Smith vs. Kyle Noke, and Scott Smith vs. Terry Martin are solid shortlisters for KO of the Year, Silva vs. Irvin and Alvarez vs. Kawajiri not so much.

-I’ll assume Mir vs. Lesnar and Diaz vs. Pellegrino making the shortlist for sub of the year over Aurelio vs. Roberts and Ishida vs. Wilcox is just some kind of perverse joke.

-King Mo over Travis Wiuff was a pretty big upset.

-Lon McEachern and Ken Shamrock (The Strikeforce crew) should probably be in the mix for the commentator awards.

And finally, if Gegard Mousasi doesn’t win Fighter of the Year, there is no justice in this world

by smoogy on Jan 1, 2009 6:05 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

i dont think mousasi wins.. it would probably be silva or gsp..

although i think gsp shouldnt win because he only fought twice i think, and serra is a gimmie.

http://weoweoweo.deviantart.com/

by Anton Tabuena on Jan 1, 2009 6:09 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, Mousasi is probably going to get screwed because his popularity just isn’t on the same level as Silva/Penn/GSP. But Mousasi’s year was simply incredible, he went 7-0 (including the K-1 match), got better with every fight, beat Kang in a relatively big upset, won two fights in one night, was crowned the champion of a major fight promotion, and showed his impressive hands in brutalizing Musashi in his K-1 debut. Not to take away from the 2008 that was had by Silva, GSP and Penn, but they all went 2-0 or 3-0 against competition they were supposed to beat.

by smoogy on Jan 1, 2009 6:17 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

What exactly will Mousasi get screwed out of by not being voted “fighter of the year” by the BE readers?

6 wins in 2008, including the MW Tourney, and also the K-1 kickboxing win at Dynamite!!

I'll share my thought process for you all to see

-Rashad Evans – 2-0 on the year. 1 KO, 1 TKO. The Liddell KO was impressive but it’s hard to say where Chuck is right now. The Forrest win was big and gave him THE title.
- Miguel Torres – 3-0 on the year. This was the year where he really became “the man” in the eyes of a lot of fans and he turned in some memorable performances, most notably against Maeda.
-B.J. Penn – 2-0 on the year. Severely outclassed both Stevenson and Sherk but I take him out of contention based on not even fighting once in the second half of the year.
-Georges St. Pierre – 2-0 on the year. Win over Fitch was a win in a #1 vs. #2 matchup, reclaimed title from Serra.
Anderson Silva – 3-0 on the year. Win over Dan Henderson in March being signature win, win over Cote was bizarre though and moving up to 205 to beat Irvin was nice but carried no significant meaning beyond being in a different weight class. Removing him from personal consideration.
Gegard Mousasi – 6-0 on the year (counting MMA only). Winning DREAM Middleweight GP in process. Tournament win included 2 wins in final night. Only limiting factor is the “legitimacy of opposition” as only Kang was in the top 10 of most rankings at the time of the fight (and even Kang was severely overrated).

My personal top 3 would be
1. Mousasi – 3 more wins than anyone else on the list, DREAM GP win carries significance
2. GSP – Win in a #1 vs. #2 fight and revenge/regaining title.
3. Evans – Win over Griffin edges him over Torres for me.

by Brent Brookhouse on Jan 1, 2009 7:14 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Only Kang was in the top 10

But Manhoef and Jacare are both more dangerous opponents than anybody on that list save Dan Henderson. Ask Mark Hunt if you disagree. Jacare will be fighter of the year 2009

by skwirrl on Jan 1, 2009 11:25 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

-I think there’s plenty of arguments for WEC or Strikeforce as promotion of the year. And there are plenty of people who prefer the pageantry of DREAM as well.

-The shortlist are only my recollections. There’s no reason to get snarky about it. All of your recommendations are definitely contenders.

-Lon and Ken do a pretty good job, but since they really only do the taped Strikeforce on NBC, I’m not really sure they belong on the list. But people are more then welcome to vote for them if they want.

-I had Alvarez as my number 1 if he beat Aoki. Now that he hasn’t, Mousasi’s definitely in the running, though I think there’s arguments for other contenders as well.

by Mike Fagan on Jan 1, 2009 11:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

We have 11 categories to choose from. You may choose up to 3, in descending order.

Does this mean we can only vote in three categories, or we can only vote for three contestants per category? I’m assuming the latter, but want to be sure.

I’ll post my choices later, I just feel that posting our selections here rather than sending them in via email provides accountability. Not that I feel there’s some great need for accountability in this particular instance, but it is nice to have in general.

Don’t argue with anyone on their picks. You can express opinions in the comments but if someone posts their picks don’t throw a “I can’t believe you put ____, you’re an idiot” kind of thing at them.

I like the example for this thread.

At first I thought those were the choices and I said to myself that April Fools had come a little early. Then I realized that it was just a format example. You have a good sense of humour obviously. : )

FIGHTER: #1 Demian Maia (although my favorite fighter remains Fedor) #2 Rashad (even though I didn`t ever really get excited to see him on a card before he knocked out Chuck) #3 Alistair Overeem

FIGHT: # 1 Wandy versus Chuck (what a brawl! Too bad it was only three rounds but they were spent after three so maybe 5 rounds would have meant a more relaxed pace that fight). # 2 MacDonald versus Maia (very entertaining chess match on the ground) # 3 Fedor versus Silvia (Too bad it was so short but the hype leading up to it made it one of the best fight results, for me anyway, of 2008).
CARD: #1 Dynamite 2008 (if everyone had showed up it would have been even better…MMA versus K-1 was nice to see) #2 UFC 92 a close second. #3 Affliction Banned a very close 3rd…great heavyweight card!
PERSONALITY: #1 Mayhem Miller #2 Forrest # 3 Jackson
PROMOTION: #1 UFC #2 DREAM #3 WVR
KNOCK OUT: Stephens vs. Rafael dos Anjos
SUBMISSION: Fedor versus Sylvia (due to the speed in which it was pulled off)
BREAKOUT FIGHTER: Maia / Cain
UPSET: Mark Hunt losing by knockout (due to the speed in which it was pulled off)
PERFORMANCE: Alistair Overeem beating the K-1 bad boy at his own game
STORY: Randy Couture swallowing his pride and finally doing what he was meant to do…fight in the cage
DISGRACE: Bob Sapp
COMMENTATOR: Joe Rogan (either love him or hate him…I think he is usually spot on)
CAMP: Greg Jackson

I'll be back to add more in the next twenty-four...unless, by some mishap, someone K.O s FEDOR.

I put it 2nd behind Rashad KOing Liddell – It’s flashier, but Liddell was out cold for a while, the hit was so sudden, and its effects were enormous for the division.

by who me on Jan 2, 2009 12:36 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Ok, I'm obviously missing something...

I’m asking this in a civil manner and I’m not trying to be a smart ass at all…. but can y’all explain to me why Fedor vs Tim Sylvia is a candidate for Performance of the Year? Is it just because it was the only fight Fedor had this year and its Fedor Emelianenko?

I don’t understand the praise in Tim Sylvia’s abilities, I really don’t. There was a time in his career that he deserved praise for his abilities in competition but certainly not lately. Everything that man has done in a cage or ring since he defended the HW belt against Jeff Monson has been complete garbage to me. Are there aspects of Tim Sylvia that I’m missing? When I see him I see a guy that doesn’t really care about what he is doing and feels that just because of his size he needs to be viewed as a force in this sport. He’s slow and lethargic in his matches yet he is amazingly arrogant outside of his matches.

I wasn’t the least bit surprised that Fedor disposed of him as quickly as he did but I wouldn’t call this a performance of the year candidate. I wasn’t a visitor of this site until a few months ago but was Fedor’s fight against Hong Man Choi a candidate for Performance of the Year 2007?

by Gunslinger20 on Jan 2, 2009 1:27 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It’s fairly rare to see a guy dominate a top 10 fighter like that. It wasn’t just a flash KO either. It was 36 seconds of complete domination.

by Mike Fagan on Jan 2, 2009 1:50 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I guess just because I had so much confidence that Fedor was going to do exactly what he did in that fight…. I didn’t see it as an overly great fight worthy of such an accolade. I guess my point is that I didn’t see Sylvia has a Top Ten fighter at that time. I guess it just speaks volumes of how the Heavyweight Division has grown in such a short time.

by Gunslinger20 on Jan 2, 2009 2:00 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Dang...

could I have said “I guess” a few more times… just caught that, sorry guys. Not completely awake.

by Gunslinger20 on Jan 2, 2009 2:01 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Tim did school Nog for 3 rounds (before losing) prior to his fight with Fedor which at the time was incredible.

36 seconds is what you would expect Fedor to dispatch a can, not a top 10 HW – which Tim clearly was at the time.

by Benicio on Jan 2, 2009 2:36 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I also said that I didn’t view Tim Sylvia as a Top 10 HW then… so the match didn’t impress me. How is it clear that Tim belonged in the Top 10? The way I see it, it was just because of his name and what he did years ago that kept him in any Top 10 at the time of that fight.

What he did against Big Nog was nothing major. I think taking a beating and wearing out his opponent is one of Nog’s gameplans. He wore Tim out and caught him with the sub. Sad that he had to be beaten like a punching bag to pull it off… but it worked.

by Gunslinger20 on Jan 2, 2009 2:51 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I can’t think of 10 guys I would put ahead of him even now.

Lol...

I can, but I’m not gonna be a smart ass…. y’all answered my question so I’ll leave it alone.

by Gunslinger20 on Jan 3, 2009 12:14 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Just to add...

It seemed like he was in the Top Ten just because there was no one else to put in there, not because he talents and recent performances justified him being there.

by Gunslinger20 on Jan 2, 2009 2:54 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Nog has a habit of making people look good it seems ;)

by Benicio on Jan 2, 2009 3:20 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Nog still beat Sylvia

Whether he looked like garbage doing it or not… he still beat him.

by Gunslinger20 on Jan 3, 2009 12:14 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I put it in there because of Fedor’s performance (performance of the year) not because it was a great match. Whether any of us like Tim Sylvia or not he was still a highly regarded heavyweight champion who had be a staple of the UFC heavyweight division for years(heck he holds two wins over Fedor’s next opponent). Fedor utterly destroyed him in the length of a commercial spot, hard to not appreciate that performance. Heck looking back at the competition Fedor had been facing for the last couple of years I almost put it as a choice for comeback of the year too, he re-established himself at the top of the division in under a minute.
