Thoughts on "UFC to Japan"
Japanese sports tabloids are very conservative when it comes to publishing news articles on MMA. A Japanese MMA writer once confessed in his own blog that since he's born and raised in Pro Wrestling journalism where keeping keyfabe is the name of the game, he's still trapped with that attitude when dealing with MMA news, so he cannot publish articles without the promoter's approval. As a fan I am enjoying US MMA news sites because I can find information on potential fight cards for the upcoming DREAM and Sengoku events much earlier than domestic news outlets, although often inaccurate.
So when I see "the UFC coming to Japan next spring" story in Japanese sports tabloid and consider the nature and mentality of those tabloids, my take is that this should be pretty done deal.
Actually the story sounds weird in many ways. Dana White praises Gomi and Kid. But he never praises someone who does not belong to UFC. He says he is willing to cut one-match contract with them. If this is possible, a lot of other things should have turned out quite differently for UFC.
"Are Japanese fighters stronger than UFC fighters?" - are these really Dana's words? I do not think so. These are just what Japanese fans would like to hear (it should have gained much more attention if it's a year ago, though). Very carefully worded.
I think UFC may already get DREAM and Sengoku. I do not know what I mean by "get", but this explains everything nicely.
For many Japanese MMA fans. it is the UFC who killed PRIDE. UFC is a big bad guy who destroys everything. In addition, there were no UFC on Japanese TV for the past 2 years so casual fans simply do not know what it is. UFC brand does not work as it is here. Many DREAM fans have never seen GSP, who I believe could be a huge star here too if promoted properly.
For UFC to enter Japanese MMA market, spending millions of marketing and advertising is not a solution. Man on the street knows what PRIDE and K-1 is in this country(Problem is man on the street does not know DREAM). Akebono vs Bob Sapp was watched by 50 million people. Just leverage and stretch the already existing popularity. Say PRIDE style fights are back instead of saying UFC is coming.
As long as I personally have been observing, UFC is not very good at executing this type of quiet, patient and very locally adapted market entry strategy. But maybe they are starting doing the right way. I assume someone deliberate may be helping UFC. I would not be surprised if the person who is helping UFC is Kazuyoshi Ishii, a K-1 founder and a huge fixer in the industry.
National network TV deal is a big missing element here. I would like to see the development.

If this is the case…Dana should just make a UFC card…and then just substitute the PRIDE name in the title instead of UFC…lol…thanks for the read.

Dana is a smart dude!
He says, ‘Your fighters are good, it would be nice for our fighters to fight your fighters, no strings attached,’ knowing full well that they (the japanese fighters) have a slim chance of wining. And, if they do win, it will have been a war like no other. The japanese fans will be instantly addicted.

Huh?
Guys like Kid Yamamoto and Gomi would be favorites against MOST fighters in their respective divisions. Sure, Gomi is somewhat of a longshot against Penn (but then so is every other fighter in the lightweight division).
But Kid vs Faber? I’d favor Kid. Kid is more athletic, has better wrestling, and is more explosive in the stand-up. Faber has better submission skills.

You're right about Penn, but...
Guys like Yamamoto, Gomi, Aoki, Calvancante, Hansen, etc. are ranked higher than most UFC guys — that’s true. They all have pretty awesome records, and when they lose, they lose to each other. This is only because they don’t fight the UFC guys. Kid has a decision win over Curran, Uriah choked him unconcious, for example. Kenny Florian would confuse, frustrate, and win against Gomi. Did you see Gomi fight Diaz — he was in way over his head. BJ absolutely destroyed him.
Dana believes that after his fighters beat their fighters, they will become UFC fans. That is his basic strategy. By talking their fighters up, he can make his fighters look better after they win.
I’m still not sure this will win the fans.

UFC/WEC fighters have that Samurai/Warrior spirit of fighting, that will win them over.

Would have to agree.
It would be difficult for the UFC to be succesful in Japan.

Again, you seem to be a tad biased with UFC/WEC fighters.
Guys with excellent submission skills and above-average wrestling are a bad matchup for Gomi.
I thought Diaz was a bad matchup for Gomi just due to the reach, boxing skills, and BJJ skills. It didn’t help that Gomi underestimated him (he uncharacteristically gassed in the first round), but he still nearly knocked Diaz out in that fight.
Florian I would not favor against Gomi. Hes a well rounded fighter, but really wouldn’t want to stand against Gomi. Florian’s game plan would be simple… try and take Gomi down to submit him. Its possible, but with Gomi well aware of this I wouldn’t bet on it happening.
I will say this though, Gomi’s style is tailor-made for a ring. He may be the P4P hardest hitter in MMA (with good wrestling), but his submission defense needs a lot of work if he were to move to the cage.

You must be a Gomi fan...
Did Gomi underestimate Diaz? If that’s true then Gomi is just an idiot. BTW… If anybody was underestimating anybody it was Diaz uderestimating Gomi — How else is he gonna find time to smoke a joint before the fight. Gomi looked like he was banking on a “sluggers chance” in that fight and in others I’ve seen. He really isn’t even close to being the #2 LW in the world. I think he knows it too — that’s why he won’t fight in the UFC.
Florian would treat Gomi the same way he treated Huerta — stand-up, take it down, no matter — the only difference is that Gomi would probably get choked unconscious in the first round.
Gomi’s style is more than “tailor-made” for a ring, it is dependant on it! If he fights in the UFC he WILL NOT have that advantage.

Hmm...
I like Florian, but I think its a stretch to favor him over Gomi.
Kid vs Faber needs to happen. UFC, Dream, wherever.
