Quote of the Day: Fabricio Werdum on Brock Lesnar

"They should have put Cigano, who is a newcomer in the event, to face Lesnar, who only has one fight in UFC," Werdum continued. "But that’s OK, I’ll win quickly my next fight and my time will come. Nogueira will certainly defeat Frank Mir and Couture will beat Lesnar. The "big" Lesnar won’t make it, Couture will use a good strategy to get him tired and will win on the last round. I can’t see him winning, Couture has a lot more experience and Lesnar is like a white-belt in there."

-- Fabricio Werdum interviewed by Tatame (translated by Fightline).

He also claims he's got a contractually guaranteed title shot if he beats Junior Cigano.

Werdum needs to learn how to read a contract…

if he wants to wait for a title shot he will wait a loooong time… I kind of think he will opt for another fight so he can at least make some money.

What's Werdum to do?

He got passed over, because he doesn’t stand out compared to the other four fighters. He should be entitled to talk shit like everyone else. You may not agree with his assessment, but what Werdum said was far from outrageous. What the UFC’s done in terms of the heavyweight matchups makes total sense. Werdum has to somehow make himself relevant to UFC fans. That involves being noticed and winning whatever matches he has before a title shot.

Well said.

He’s actually just trying to make a little money for himself, at least that’s how I read it. Securing a future fight with Lesnar is a potential gold-mine, and everyone involved knows this. Lesnar would be smart to take the fight, regardless of how the tournament goes.

There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.

He may not be my favorite fighter

But I’m glad to see him out there actually speaking his mind (see; it’s ok guys, no honor codes were shattered!). It should come as no surprise that a Brazilian BJJ wizard like Werdum would think himself (and those close to him/as experienced as him) superior to Lesnar. Truly, Lesnar might be the kind of monster you blow raspberries at until he climbs out from under your bed and shakes the shit out of you. Then you need a night light. And a bag of ice.

He's promoting himself and he's also right

Commentators here have pointed out that this is smart marketing on Werdum’s part to set up a rivalry with Lesnar. True. On the other hand, his comments can also be take at face value and you have to agree they’re fully justified. Werdum is higher ranked that Mir and Lesnar, and deserves a shot at the “title” (Nogueira’s or Couture’s) ahead of either of them.

No more sympathy for you, Werdum

Bitching and moaning is hardly the way to introduce yourself to the public at large, justified or not. Lesnar will simply never earn some people’s respect because he used to be a pro wrestler. If he used to be a janitor or garbageman, he’d get more respect. But a lot of my fellow MMA fans hate – and will continue to, no matter what the man does.

And to those people I say fuck you.

Brock Lesnar is laughable!

NO standup skill. All he can so is rush and overpower his opponents. With additional fights his many, incorrectable, weakness will emerge.I do not really give a damn about his fake pro wrestling background and all his girlfriends(i.e. the undertaker, etc.) sitting at ringside ,who would like use any success that he may have in the octagon as verification to their actual ability to fight for real. They may be able to fool dumb, drunk rednecks and the trailer trash nation but the closer reality of a fight lies in mma.Minus all the rules and or lack of usable clothing.I do not hate Brock.Hell,he is a smart man…gotta respect that.He has had all the years the ufc has been in existance to make his move and he does it at a time when the major threats in the heavyweight division have age well past their prime or are so beaten up from mma competition that their is virtually no one left that my prevent him from actually attaining the “top dog” position. All he is a new-n-improved Tank Abbot, except not as manly and with that high-class whore perfume smell.Good luck to lesnutts though, maybe,he will at the very least draw more sharks to what is now a plankton pool.
