Keep it going!

Some weeks will be better than others. Can’t wait for Karo to discuss his street cred again..that should have some hilarious taglines attached.

I can’t quite figure Dana out. He acts exactly like a 22 year old frat boy, but his business acumen puts him closer to Steve Ballmer than a second year business school punk. The dude’s got some serious clarity on the Randy issue though, echoing public sentiment with the “All I give a shit about is that he’s back and he’s fighting in November!” stuff.

There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.

The real question is....

Will Randys face look better or worse than this after his fight with Brock? I say much worse.

by nitro on Sep 6, 2008 2:27 PM EDT reply actions

I agree with the sentiment, but might disagree with the statement.

I think Brock’s got such ridiculous power that if he is able to express it in this fight, Randy will wake up to bright lights after only one or two punches. Randy’s whole gameplan is going to be about avoidance, just like Chuck’s gameplan has been for the last four years. You can’t take Brock head-on, you’ve got to minimize his strengths, and one of those is his massive right hand. Frank Mir and Heath Herring have both hit the mat at the first serious impact from Brock’s meathammer.

I just don’t think Brock is the kinda guy who can smash an opponent’s face with twenty good shots during a fight. I just doubt anyone can survive enough impacts to create that number of landmarks.

There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.

How about this quote:

“And finally, I have to put a brother in there, so I’m going with Quintin Jackson. That’s my guy; that’s my fourth.”
Franklin McNeil carves out who he would have on the MMA Mount Rushmore.

I despise that aspect of black 'journalism' in today's media.

Partly for the double-standard, but mostly because it’s a ridiculous criteria to use when judging the greatest performer in a given arena of competition. A case can be made for Rampage to be there legitimately, I don’t think it’s a winning case personally, but I think there’s a real case that can be made. But because he’s black? That just sucks.

Florian went on to say he would add Chuck Liddell because he was the face of the sport.
McNeil was a little confused and said something like “But, Rampage beat Chuck. He can’t be on there.”

McNeil didn’t seem to realize this would bump Royce Gracie from his Mt. as Hughes, another of his four, had a victory over him.

by Eugene Schelfaut on Sep 6, 2008 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions

So then...

you have to take Rampage off because Silva beat him twice…and then take Silva off because he lost to Hunt…who lost to….

Jackson has never been the clear cut #1 guy in the company he worked for for any substantial period of time. He was in the UFC for a period of a year …the majority of which he was sidelined with an injury and TUF (he had a single win after the title win). Liddell was THE guy in the UFC for roughly three years.

The argument *for* Rampage is an interesting one,

but it doesn’t have too much to do with his overall prowess. He’s symbolic of the most distinct aspect of MMA, as it compares to other combat sports: the importance of stylistic matchups. Some guys are simply kryptonite to others, and this make the belt system problematic. Rampage slaughters Chuck when they fight, so much so that if we hadn’t watched Chuck literally prove himself to be one of the greatest MMA champions of all time over the last few years, we’d wonder if he ever deserved a title shot in the first place. But then Forrest comes in and makes Rampage look very much like a mortal man.

At least, that’s the argument I would use if I were lobbying for Rampage. Certainly not the shade of his skin.

Agreed...

And beyond the double-standard issues…there is no way he makes my list

1. Royce Gracie – Without him the sport likely doesn’t evolve or continue forward in America…or we’re at least several years behind in the evolution of the sport.
2. Fedor – Despite my problems with him he has been undeniably the most dominant man in the sport for a more prolonged period of time than anyone else in the modern era.
3. Randy Couture – Titles, longevity, fame…

Then you’d have to think either Sakuraba (whose late career fade taints his legacy a bit…but don’t take that as a knock on him, just that his resume suffers due to fighting well past when he should have quit), Liddell (for dominance and public notoriety), Matt Hughes (dude was THE WELTERWEIGHT for forever), Dana White (did they have to be fighters? because White has done more for the sport than almost anyone else)…um…and probably a few others I’m overlooking.

Awesome, you named all of the guys I would have in contention!

I went through that list, and even toyed with the idea of Ken Shamrock at one point, simply because he pioneered the concept of ‘mixing’ the martial arts. He wasn’t very good at it, ultimately, but he was the first guy to really attempt it.

That’s how my 1-2-3 looks, too. It’s tempting to lock Chuck in there, but he’s just not as influential of a figure as Randy has been. Bigger, more public maybe, but not as influential to the sport.

I probably go Royce, Sakuraba, Couture, and Chuck. Maybe Fedor.

by Mike Fagan on Sep 6, 2008 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I would put Chuck on there over Randy, and I’m far from a Chuck fan.

Royce-must have
Fedor-especially if he beats barnett and Randy
Chuck-the face of teh UFC and a dominant champ

Not on:
Randy-great but overrated
Hughes-just wasn;t as devastating as chuck

Maybe—
GSP
BJ

check back in a few years.

I was on the call - I gotta better one

’I’m fighing because I love to fight. I don’t know what Fedor wants. If he wants to be considered the best heavyweight in the world, he has to come and fight me’ – Randy Couture.

Like Dana said, the shit’s chess, it ain’t checkers.

That Randy quote really is funny. Delusional, but funny.
