Andrei Arlovski vs. Roy Nelson Booked for EliteXC CBS Show
According to $kala this is a one-fight cooperation between Affliction and EliteXC, but it's admittedly a doosy:
At least two fighters will not sit on the sidelines following the postponement of Affliction’s Oct. 4 "Day of Reckoning" event in Las Vegas.
Former UFC champion Andrei Arlovski (13-5) and IFL kingpin Roy Nelson (13-2) have been offered a heavyweight bout at EliteXC "Heat" Oct. 4 at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla. The event will be aired live on CBS.
Arlovski’s management team would not comment Wednesday on the proposed bout, while Nelson’s attorney, Rod Donohoo, also refrained from remarks. However, Sherdog.com has learned from separate sources that both fighters have agreed in principle to the match and that contracts have been issued for review.
A few things:
1. This is a significant improvement of the EliteXC card. Nelson isn't the creme de la creme of the heavyweight division, but this is a legitimate heavyweight fight. To think, though, that Kimbo Slice vs. Ken Shamrock is the main event is hard to swallow. But this fight added to the Shields vs. Daley bout creates a rock solid line-up with a legitimately popular Arlovski fighting on primetime network television. Well done, EliteXC.
2. Let's be clear: this is a Hail Mary pass, but it's a damn good one. The Arlovski addition - in exchange for lifting the Affliction ban - is quite a deal. It's no long term solution, but it's enough to buy them some time.
3. I distinctly recall Gary Shaw in several interviews joking about Affliction's MMA efforts and they they couldn't compete. My how desperation changes priorities.
4. Competition is a wonderful thing, but it works two ways. Expect Dana White to see EliteXC's raise...and then some.
Press release announcing the event after the jump.
MARQUEE HEAVYWEIGHT FIGHT BETWEEN TWO FORMER MMA CHAMPIONS — ANDREI ARLOVSKI AND ROY NELSON — HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE "CBS ELITEXC SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS"
PRIMETIME EVENT ON OCT. 4
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 24 — CBS, EliteXC, and Trump’s Affliction Entertainment jointly announced today that a fifth fight has been added to the lineup for CBS ELITEXC SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS on Saturday, Oct. 4 featuring top-ranked MMA heavyweights Andrei Arlovski against the last reigning IFL heavyweight champion Roy “Big Country” Nelson.
Arlovski, who was originally slated to fight in the main event of the Oct. 11 Affliction card, is the No. 4 ranked heavyweight in the world, according to MMAWEEKLY.com. A native of Belarus, Arlovski was last seen ending Ben Rothwell’s 13-fight winning streak during the inaugural "Affliction Banned" show, which was held on July 19, 2008. Arlovski is a former UFC heavyweight champion and currently has a record of 13-5.
Roy "Big Country" Nelson has made a name for himself with impressive knock outs, a remarkable ground game and stellar submissions. He was the IFL’s last reigning heavyweight champion and currently holds an impressive record of 13-2. Training with Ken Shamrock’s legendary fight camp, the Lion’s Den, Nelson stands at 6'0" and weighs approximately 250 pounds.
"This is yet another testament to EliteXC’s willingness to work with other MMA promotions to bring the best possible fights to the broadest possible audience," said Jeremy Lappen, head of the Live Fight Division of EliteXC. "Special thanks to the hard working team at Affliction and of course our partners at CBS and Showtime."
Michael Cohen, Executive Vice President of The Trump Organization and Chief Operating Officer of Affliction Entertainment, added, "Mr. Trump and the Affliction Entertainment group are honored to be working alongside CBS, Showtime and EliteXC. It is without question that this event will exceed everyone’s expectations and will continue to uphold Affliction’s promise to promote the best fights for the benefit of the fans."
The third installment of CBS’s primetime MMA event, CBS ELITEXC SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS, will be broadcast live from the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla. on Saturday, Oct. 4 (9:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
EliteXC and Affliction have teamed up to deliver one of the strongest MMA cards, top to bottom, of the year. The following is the confirmed lineup for the Oct. 4 CBS ELITEXC SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS:
- Kimbo Slice vs. Ken Shamrock (Heavyweights)
- Jake Shields vs. Paul Daley (for EliteXC Welterweight title)
- Andrei Arlovski vs. Roy "Big Country" Nelson (Heavyweights)
- Gina Carano vs. Kelly Kobold (Women's 140-Pound Weight Class)
- Murilo "Ninja" Rua vs. Benji Radach (Middleweights)

Wow!
One concern I have, is this lineup
* Kimbo Slice vs. Ken Shamrock (Heavyweights)
* Jake Shields vs. Paul Daley (for EliteXC Welterweight title)
* Andrei Arlovski vs. Roy “Big Country” Nelson (Heavyweights)
* Gina Carano vs. Kelly Kobold (Women’s 140-Pound Weight Class)
* Murilo “Ninja” Rua vs. Benji Radach (Middleweights)
In two hours? They pissed off a ton of affiliates when they went long with four fights in their first event. They either need to get another half hour, or drop Rua/Radach to the undercard.
Win for us fans. This could prove to be a huge moment in the mma landscape, if you mix together Golden Boy, Affliction, EXC, CBS/Showtime.
While the fight itself is interesting, the co-operation of these entities could mean longer term survival for EXC and Affliction.
I don’t think it is their intention at this time, but perhaps a certain measure of success could convince them to team up in the future.
"The bigger the cushion, the sweeter the pushin'"
This definately improves the card…
And ive said it before afflictions best bet is to work with elite xc… their biggest risk is not losing money on mma promotion which they have and will…
It is not being able to play in the MMA space.
Elite XC is kaput… that is for sure. Showtime will take it over and either liquidate or move forward.
If affliction plays their cards right they can prolong their lifespan.
It's like two promotions that fell overboard with both clinging to one life vest.
Still, I’m kind of excited to see this card for sure. It’s unfortunate that yet another freakshow is set for the main event, but there are some quality bouts here, so I’ll take what I can from EliteXC and Affliction. Might as well squeeze as much juice as you can.
Obviously this is incredibly sweet. I just feel bad for Roy Nelson. He is definitely going to get KTFO real quick.
This also opens up the possibility of seing Arlovski again in elite XC if the show does solid ratings. Possibly seeing Arlovski vs Kimbo…yeah right…maybe? lol

also, if they get 4 million + viewers, this will really get Arlovski’s name out there and bode well for a big fight in any other promotion.
Somehow I can see Dana White lauging aboutt his becasue he knows EliteXc will go under soon enough..he will resign Arlovski and he will have been exposed to 4 million fans that will then pump money into a UFC PPV as soon as Arlovski is headlining again..
It all comes back to Dana in the end..
Barnett is gonna fight at Sengoku on Nov.1 so I guess that was out.
Big Country for the win!

sergio non of usa today spoke with cohen of affliction and he says that the january card is a co -promotion
Mike Goldberg on robnashville:
"His analysis is so analytical"
When did that happen? because last week on sherdog radio T-shirt guy said the January show is not confirmed, and it didn’t seem like he had many details of when the show was or how it’s going to work.
go to sergio non’s blog at usa today

I don’t buy it
Elite XC and Affliction will also co-promote Affliction’s next event with Golden Boy Promotions, now scheduled for Jan. 24, Cohen said. That fight will air either on CBS or Showtime, he said.
I don’t see how a 3-way promotion will work on non ppv.
i’m not asking you to buy it….. just letting you know i wasn’t confused

With 10 days left before this event, is this addition going to make a significant impact on ratings? Sure, everyone that reads MMA sites will know and care, but most were probably already watching anyway.
No effect on ratings. The show is sinking or swimming on Kimbo vs. Shamrock, and then Carano. It will get online fans more excited though, and it may lead to a better show.

As Rome said, no effect on ratings. Main value it has is it could turn Andrei into a much bigger star.
The likelihood of Dream, Affliction, and EliteXC all surviving much longer is practically zero. Neither Affliction nor EliteXC are likely to survive with what they have right now, but if they can between them put together the components of a successful promotion (name value, star fighters, tv deal) then the organization that survives has a decent chance at surviving a lot longer.
If Andrei becomes a bigger star, that will benefit Affliction in January. If Affliction doesn’t survive, EliteXC picks up Andrei and has another star to possibly use for a PPV.

explain this: elites first show payroll was $479,001. with kimbo making 175,00. How in the hell are they going to pay andrei arlovski his 500,00 plus 250,00 (win) payment? that is 750,000 for one fighter. thats like 4 times the amount the original payroll for ALL of their figthers on the first show. And in case you a wandering, yes elite did agree to pay the affliction fighters their salary that they receive just like the would if they were fighting under the affliction banner.
I guess the million they borrowed from showtime just went to pay arlovski and nelson.
You should have been watching ALL ALONG!

Now is about time for someone to post a link to the Chicks and Hits CBS advertisement.
