Kurt Angle: Mixed Martial Arts Fighter?

Fronted by Luke Thomas. Personally, I find Angle's pronouncements to be unreliable.

467848_bf22f76c67_m_medium

According to this article from The Sun, former WWE superstar Kurt Angle plans to be an MMA fighter by next year:

"I’ve always wanted to do it. I’m the only Olympic gold medallist that will enter the Octagon and it feels right for me.

"I can almost guarantee you’re going to see me in the Octagon."

Regarding his health, he said:

"I’m 100%. A lot of people on the internet are bashing me but I’ve never felt better."

Personally, I can't blame him if the money is right, but I think he will be less than successful. Not only does he have a history of medical problems, including having had at least one broken neck, but I remember once when an unknown MMA kid almost made him tap out to a kimura during a shoot promo from the WWE reality show. Only the ref saved him by claiming the kid was pinned.

I doubt this will happen.. He’s been saying this for a while. When he finally steps in the Octagon then i’ll believe it.

I agree with asmiley420…I have been reading things like this for at least 2 years now…If it happens, however unlikely, he will probably end up in a freak-show style match in Japan

a bit presumptuous isn't he?

he says, “I can almost guarantee you’re going to see me in the Octagon.”

As far as I know “the Octagon” is exclusively UFC. He can’t possibly think that Dana White would entertain the idea of putting him in the ring. It would be a bad move by the UFC to put yet ANOTHER professional wrestler in the Octagon. ESPECIALLY one who (as mythbuster pointed out) has such a history of pretty serious injuries. Ugh. Count me out of this one for sure.

Update

Here is a video of the MMA kid (Daniel Puder) almost making Angle tap out.

Wow, really?

“almost made him tap out to a kimora”

I saw the vid, Puder never extended it. Why would he tap on that? Not defending, just saying. I couldnt care less if he does or doesnt go to UFC.

Extended? Are you thinking of an armbar or what? He had it way up behind his back when they stopped it.

that's a hammer lock

Doesn’t the kimura need to be rotated away from the back to crank the shoulder?

I don’t think Angle could take Puder, but that looked like standard pro-wrestling work.

I didn’t think he was targeting just the shoulder by rotating around, but moving upwards to stress the elbow as well – hard to say. There’s a reason that everybody gets this shit mixed up – even Wikipedia puts all the armlocks on one page. :-)

LOL. That kid had him.

Isn’t Angle something like 40 years old anyway? With a guy who has that kind of history of injuries, there’s no way he makes it. And yeah, I do think he’s being presumptuous, as funnytiger pointed out. I figure Dana and the UFC Brass probably have enough of a bullshit meter to smell Angle coming from a mile away.

I used to be a pro wrestling fan… i dont think anyone will argue about it being real…

the point about the kid pinning himself is legit… it was a pro wrestling match… not an MMA fight…

pro wrestling is all about entertaining and protecting your opponent so you can go out the next night and do the same thing…

i understand where kurt angle is coming from there…

that said…. will kurt fight in the ufc… more than likely not… if he does happen to make it… will he be successful…. more than likely not…. but wouldnt in be kinda sweet to see either randy or brock fight him…. tell me you wouldnt pay to see randy shut him up

Regarding Angle tapping

After having the Tough Enough contestants in a squat thrust contest, the winner (who did the most, and thus the most tired) got rewarded by having Angle kick his ass. Chris Nawrocki, who did the most, with Puder second, got his ribs broken by angle, and was forced to tap out to an illegal ‘neck crank’. Then Angle said, basically, who’s next? And Puder stepped up.

No where was this said to be an amateur wrestling match until Angle was in trouble. He knew he was screwed and had the refs 1-2-3 Puder out. You’ll notice the boos from the crowd. Even wrestling websites declared Angle was about ready to tap or snap, so to speak.

More here if anyone is interested (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/DonCallis/2004/11/14/714531.html).

Not sure of his weight class?

I say let Anderson Silva welcome him to MMA. I would pay to see that.

I’d buy that!

He looks juiced up on TNA.

And the reality is that he hasn’t done anything competitive in over a decade. You just don’t become a cage fighter overnight.

One Brock Lesnar is plenty, thanks.

Angle: You Suck!

Angle is a bully, plain and simple. He could not fight MMA—even in the YouTube clip, he says how he was afraid he was going to be paralyzed because he jammed his neck wrong or something. This dude is held together with bubblegum and can barely endure fake fighting. Imagine somebody like Rashad or Iceman kicking him upside the head? Angle was making lots of excuses about his TNA contract, Dana demanding he quit wrestling, etc. He wants to pretend to be a real tough guy, all the while knowing he’ll never fight.

No chance he tests clean for the fight

You have to love his background (the rumor going around back in the day was that even at 40-50 lbs less than Brock that he was able to out wrestle him when they went at it for real), but he has no MMA training, a ton of injuries (some very serious), and is closing in on his 40th birthday.

I have to agree with an earlier poster that if he does fight it will most likely be in Japan as a publicity stunt.

Kurt Angle is a grade-A idiot

And I say that with the utmost respect for his Olympic accomplishments, his success in the pro wrestling industry, and his legitimate athletic credentials. The man is a loon.
