Quote of the Day: Roger Huerta Is F-cked
“If this was a popularity contest, Kenny would be f--ked...But it’s not a popularity contest; it’s a fight. So therefore, Roger is f--ked. I love Roger; he’s a great guy, but every time I see Roger, he kind of gives me that wink, like he knows something I don’t. He doesn’t realize the joke’s on him. I’ve never seen Kenny so hungry.”
-- Mark DellaGrotte, trainer of Kenny Florian. Strong words for such a close and competitive match-up.

Agreed...
I honestly think we’re going to see a fight of the year type scrap here.

There is something to be said...
for when a fighter has that “I know something you don’t” look. It usually means that they…know something you don’t.

DelleGrotte is going to retire if Huerta loses.

I don’t. I do see Kenny punking out and taking Roger to the ground ala Swick in his last fight with Marcus Davis
How is taking Roger down “punking out”? If he thinks he can win standing up, he should stand with him. If he thinks he has a better chance of winning on the ground, he should take him down. It’s a pretty standard strategy.

Granted
but one thing that irritates me the most is when two fighters are really good at striking or grappling then they come in to fight and one fighter will do the opposite – I feel like that is punking out. Such as the Swick/Davis fight. Both guys are known for their hands and yet Swick kept taking Davis down to the ground. WTF! That was supposed to be fight of the night.
It's exploiting a weakness...
which is what you do in ANY sport. You don’t throw fastballs to a guy who thrives on fastballs no matter how exciting home runs are. You don’t throw at a team’s best cornerback…
I have a notorious mancrush on Huerta and I am picking him. But I wouldn’t claim Kenny is being a punk by trying to put himself in the best position to win.

I see what you’re saying, I just don’t think it really applies to this fight. If Florian takes Huerta down, it will be to finish the fight, not to score points.

lol
Nah…that’s not punking out man…that’s being smart and taking the easiest route to victory.

I guess my view is tainted as I like to see two really good strikers go at it. Hopefully, Marcus Davis and Chris Lytle get to fight soon. That’ll be a barn burner.
I'm on your bandwagon
I love Scraps like Chuck VS Wand
But I also love submissions and more so submission escapes like Franklin VS Lutter
Straight up MMA!
all you gotta do is...
All I know is that I like both fighters for many reasons but for the fact that they try to finish the fight and usually put on a good show.
I’m a little worried that they both know what winning the fight will mean (title shot) so I’m scared we’ll get a repeat of Cote vs Almeda though thankfully Florian nor Huerta are know for grinding out wins.
It really should be a great fight.
After I watched Cote grind out his win against Almeida, I knew right there that he was not worthy of a title shot against Silva, but that was the deal before the fight happened. If by chance Florian and Huerta play that game, it’ll make their fight against Penn appear to be a gimme (kinda like Cote against Silva).
They will not play that game…because both are good all around…whereas Cote is subpar on the ground…and same for Almeida standing.

Not to mention that this isn’t the first time Cote took the easy route. Remember when he fought Scott Smith?
Also remember Cote’s trainer talking about how his performance against Almeida made him “proud” because he followed his gameplan to the letter. I doubt either Florian or Huerta have coaches telling to avoid engaging. If anything, their coaches are telling them “don’t you DARE let this go to decision!”

Yes, but...
...the “striker vs. grappler” dynamic goes totally out of the window here. I think they understood that going to the ground was nearly suicide for Cote. However, Florian and Huerta are both capable standing and on the ground. That means trying to grind out a decision is A) risky because you might get caught with something and B) risky because who knows what the judges are seeing. These two guys have to know that their only guarantee is by finishing, while Cote knew that judges like strikers landing solid shots more than grapplers throwing subs from their back. So throw two or three strike combos, lots of jabs, and don’t get taken down and you’re likely to win in Cote’s case.

Where would he go to make more?
I can’t understand why he’s causing a fuss right this moment. The UFC is smart not to let someone fight for a title without resigning. See what BJ Penn did when the UFC made that mistake. They are learning as they go as well. They just smarten up fast. This leaves me betwixed. I bet on Roger but hate when a guy chooses right before a fight to focus on anything but the fight. I’d like to know where he thinks he’s gonna go? Where else is he gonna get those type numbers in his weight class? Also, why do this going into a fight with one more on his contract? This is a prime time the UFC can f*ck with you. Double down on the dumb.
