It’s too bad MMA is struggling in Japan right now, because between Sengoku and Dream, we’re seeing some fantastic MMA. Much better than a lot of the second tier MMA in North America.

Very Very True

Good point pud333 I hope so bad Dreams can hold on and start making a profit, I don’t understand why the fans in japan don’t care about Dreams like they did pride ????

Yo, thanks a bunch for the posts here Chris. This is reporting mma at it’s finest. I still don’t get why they were so hard to watch though.

I love japanese MMA...

Strength, size, endurance never seem to play a role in these fights. Skill is what these guys bring to the table and that is fun to watch as a MMA fan. However, I can’t help but think that these guys would get murdered in the UFC. They all look undersized for their divisions (I don’t think these guys cut much weight for the fight), the submission experts are good but the strikers seem lazy and bewildered. Maybe it’s because the UFC has already poached most of the top talent.

I was watching the Dream Lightweight tournament the other day and was impressed by how much Aoki reminded me of Royce Gracie. It just goes to show you how much things have progressed over the years. You need more than BJJ to be a competative fighter now a days.

Gomi...

is weird. His boxing technique is pretty solid…he keeps his hands up and generally keeps his chin down. He doesn’t wing too many wide shots and expose himself. But he gets hit cleanly with right hands so often.

Makes for fun fights, I just don’t totally “get” it

He get’s hit with a right because his favorite move in that fight was the left jab. You’ll notice that he gets hit after he throws his jab, also his left is a little lazy. Clearly he is a much better technical fighter than his opponent and he was content to score leg kicks and grind his way to a lazy victory. The heavy exchanges were few, far between, and not real flattering for Gomi. IMO he didn’t show much in that fight, he certainly didn’t show why he’s #2 in the world.

Even when...

he isn’t punching though he lets right hands split his defense and clip his chin. He does get lazy and seems to “expect” some fighters to not trouble him like they do.

What's your opinion on a Gomi - Florian fight?

I actually think...

that Gomi is a pretty good match-up for Florian. Kenny tends to not put himself in trouble while punishing the other guy when they leave an opening. Gomi tends to leave openings…I don’t know that Florian could pull it off…but I’d give him a decent chance to do so.

I mean — how does that look on paper?
