A bit regarding Fedor

In light of a few more challenges issued to the undisputed champion -  that is, Satoshi Ishii, and Roy Nelson - it was brought to the forefront of my mind that the way in which fighters, media and fans view Fedor Emelianenko is rather interesting. For the first time in MMA we see a clear and present will to throw just about anyone to the wolves. The Russian has become such a phenomenon in this sport that everybody who hasn't faced him believes they can beat him at his own game. Everyone who has faced him has said, "Okay, this guy is incredible." Not literally that, of course, but whether it be Kevin Randleman, Tim Sylvia, or Nogueira - they all admit to Emelianenko's dominance. With regards to Roy Nelson, who may be a semi-talented, heavyweight brawler, it seems apparent that everyone follows the trend of "I can beat him" to "Damn, he's good."

So you may be wondering by now what my point is. What i stated above is fairly apparent, but underneath all of that you see that how we as an MMA community view Fedor is nothing short of idolotry. What else but that can describe the inescapable desire to fight him and "die" with honor; or, from the fan standpoint, the urge to see him maul one more guy.

The challenge from Ishii is not even really worth discussing and we all know why. It is only worth mentioning in order to note that it will eat up several more months of Fedor's career, and that we get another highlight.

But seriously, I'm beginning to feel sorry for Fedor. I'm sure the guy just wants a good fight. He definitely doesn't want to be fighting these nobodies - but I suppose it helps his fame just that much, and the asians need to pay their bills.

It's unfortunate,,,

MMA is in a place right now where each promoter is off in their little corner doing their own thing (of course UFC’s corner is much bigger). Until a system is established where the best fighters fight instead of the ones under contract with their respective organizations, we’ll be debating on who’s the best. UFC and Fedor will have to come to some kind of agreement. It’s good for business and for the sport. Right now the best heavyweights are in the UFC. Fedor still has some years ahead of him in MMA so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens. Right now he’s the best heavyweight in the world.

I've watched all the Fedor fights I can find on Youtube,

and it looks to me like Fedor would become another GSP/A. Silva/Chuck atop the HW division. God forbid he actually got into shape and fought at LHW…

While there would be truckloads of money involved, I’m not completely sold that what this sport needs is long-term dominant stars in their respective divisions. I got bored with the Liddell reign, personally. It took Rampage’s history with Chuck to get me interested, to be perfectly honest. I liked watching Chuck sprawl-and-brawl, KO’ing everyone in sight, but it wasn’t that engaging.

In fact, for the hardcores, it’s probably more alluring having to discuss Fedor’s potential dominance than to actually see it happen.

There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.

LOL at Fedor getting into shape...

Fedor makes me feel like I could fight in UFC tomorrow…LOL

I think their dominance is less about their skill and more about needing a system where the best fight the best. For example, it seems like all the fighters in UFC come from the same schools/camps. Most of the fighters are carbon-copies of each other. There needs to be a better way to develop professional fighters. Right now the two most famous HW (Slice and Lesnar) couldn’t last 3 seconds with Fedor. But that’s a another story. I bet money it’s more Dana/UFC then Fedor which keeps him from fighting for UFC.

I'm fairly certain that Fedor never signs with the UFC.

Dana won’t back down to anyone’s demands, at least not if it’s up to him. And really, why should he acquiesce to Fedor? What does the UFC actually gain? Some short-term revenue and a long-term black eye when Fedor leaves to fight for whoever after his contract is up…assuming Fedor & Co. would actually sign a deal with the UFC, which is extremely unlikely due to all the extraneous stuff fighters have to relinquish to the UFC, such as likeness rights.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d absolutely kill to be able to watch Fedor go up against Randy, Chuck, and whoever else is at the top of the big boy divisions. I just don’t think there’s enough to gain on either side to make it happen. The only real gain is one of reputation, from either Fedor’s perspective or the UFC’s. If Fedor comes in and cleans house, it cements his legacy forever. If he comes in and gets handled by the in-house guys, then it’s a coup for the UFC.

There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.
