Quote of the Day: Kelly Kobold-Gavin

"I'm looking for a 1st or 2nd round TKO or stoppage. Gina may be the face of MMA, but I have to say, win, lose or draw I'm going to be the pretty one leaving the cage. I plan on fucking her shit up."
- Kelly Kobold-Gavin, getting ready for the biggest fight of her career against Gina Carano on EliteXC's October 4th CBS show.

hmm..
I still think Gina wins ..but with elite almost bankrupting they should make them fight topless..at least Gina that is..because win lose or draw at least we got to see a nice rack!!!!

Kelly is going Baroni on us… I love it.

This is a fantastic quote. While I respect Carano’s skills, I just can’t bring myself to like her, and the idea of her shit getting fucked up (I’m not even sure what that means, but it sounds painful) just gives me giddy glee.
I’m an official Kelly Kobold-Gavin fan now.

But you haven’t lost all sense of reason, so you’re still picking Gina to win, right?

Oh, yeah, I don’t think Kelly has a chance. If nothing else, Carano’s reach and power give her a decided advantage.

People always seem to forget what an excellent striker she is. Watching her destroy Kaitlin Young should keep people from believing the hype about her opponents at least through this next event. Seriously, that was an Anderson Silva style beatdown. (In intensity, not comparing skills)

This girl can’t even be pretty going into the ring, much less better then Gina coming out. No way she beats Carano. Is there some unspoken rule of just how ugly a girl must be to get in the mma game? Without Gina no one cares about womens mma, at least not enough to make a living off it. Why do so many people hate on Gina or believe she can’t fight? For being tough and hot at the same time? How dare she. Ever time some manly women comes forward saying how she’s f*cking Gina up or sending her home ugly, people squeal with glee. Yeah Kelly’s record is good, but when was it about a girl coming out uglier then you? Or whatever else the women fighters speak of when it comes to fighting Gina? No wonder it’s so hard to take them serious.

How dare Kelly not live up to your level of Aesthetics. Are you trying to say that only a super hot chick can take womens MMA to the next level or that we should only have pretty girls fighting?

I still wondering how Tommy7 came to the conclusion that an opponent of Gina saying she’s going to beat her down (you know, like nearly every fighter regardless of gender does) is hating.
by Tonley on Aug 20, 2008 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe he was referring to the commenters who come out every time Gina fights and talk about how much they’d like to see somebody beat her. For example, in this thread alone:
You go girl" or "Kick her ass Seabass" One or the other.
This is a fantastic quote. While I respect Carano’s skills, I just can’t bring myself to like her, and the idea of her shit getting fucked up (I’m not even sure what that means, but it sounds painful) just gives me giddy glee.

I could be wrong — don’t know Tommy at all — but I don’t think he was referring to anything Kelly said as “hating” but was more referring to the fans who want to see her lose as hating. Like I said, I could be way off base, though.

I was more speaking about the general public then Kelly specifically. Yet she does seem to be focusing on the wrong thing to me. Forget coming out of the fight prettier and come out the winner.

There are fighters I like, there are fighters I dislike. I dislike Gina Carano. I dislike her because:
A) Her failures to make weight are unprofessional and reflect poorly on her in public and in the media.
B) She doesn’t seem very committed to MMA.
C) While I find it hard to fault her for capitalizing on her looks, but constantly allowing/encouraging the media conversations with her to go that way, she’s hurting other female fighters; she’s never attempted to control her own image, only to exploit it at the expense of others.
D) She fights at a weight she can’t even make – even when the class was made specifically for her – so that she can rough up smaller fighters; if she had to fight at the weight class she should be in, she’d have a much rougher time.
I also can’t stand that every time she gets brought up we get drooling fanboys going on about her rack or her ass or her whatever. Yeah, some people find her attractive. That’s great. We get the point. Imagine if every single time Chuck Liddell was mentioned, half the comments were to the effect of “Man, that guy’s mohawk is stupid”, or “He’s pretty fugly”. None of that has anything to do with her, but it STILL turns me off.
And no, I don’t like Kelly because she said she’s going to make Gina ugly. I like her because she shows some fire and passion. And personally, I find Kelly more attractive than Gina anyway, so don’t read things into my posts that aren’t there.
by AJB on Aug 20, 2008 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
I don’t like the way Gina misses weight as well. Yet her training, talent and wins tells of her level of dedication to combat. Didn’t Kelly just lose to someone Gina beat up? She sounds like Cote to me. How can anyone find Kelly better looking then Gina? I mean my wife is way hotter then either one but picking Kelly over Gina is like picking Rosanne Barr over Eva Mendes. Questionable.

It’s called personal preference. Carano simply isn’t my type. She looks… plastic.
by AJB on Aug 20, 2008 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Plastic is still better then that women in the picture. The only thing that shows most of them are girls in the ring/cage, is the t-shirts they’re wearing. Pamela Anderson looks really plastic and is way hotter then this Kelly girl. Reminds me of a border patrolman on ‘Weeds’ that likes his girl to dead press him after “making love.” Either way she won’t beat Gina. I’ll bet whatever.
by Tommy7 on Aug 20, 2008 11:39 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Look, this is just assertions of personal opinion, and frankly, it’s the sort of thing that pisses me off to begin with. If you want to assert that she won’t beat Gina, fine, that’s great, I don’t even disagree with you. But why does it even matter who thinks what about who is more attractive?
Jesus, and people think we’ve achieved gender equality in North America… Let’s just watch them fucking fight.
by AJB on Aug 21, 2008 12:59 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I thought one of my original points was just that? Kelly commenting on leaving the ring prettier instead of the winner. But yeah whatever you said, your right.
by Tommy7 on Aug 21, 2008 1:22 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I like the way “fight” isn’t on the same line as the “Let’s just watch them fucking.” I laughed a little.

She’s not hurting other female fighters, she’s helping them out — Tara Larosa signed a huge contract because of the great response that womens MMA had received (in large part due to Gina Carano).

The ability to differentiate between
what’s ‘best’ for the sport, and what’s ‘fair’ is more rare than we might assume. Some people declare the Gina effect to be nothing more than chauvinism run rampant, and therefore it destroys the ‘integrity’ of the sport. These people disregard the whole notion that, in order to garner enough popularity to make women’s MMA a viable professional sport, marketing must occur.
MMA’s primary audience is White, North American 18-34 year old men. These guys won’t pay to watch a couple of manly women fight, when they could watch truly competitive, relevant men battle their way to the top of a division. But these guys will pay to watch someone like Gina fight, instead of those other relevant fights.
And no, I’m not saying that women’s MMA is irrelevant. I’m saying that as a sport, it doesn’t possess the drama to make it viable on its own merits. So there has to be something present to replace the drama, and in this case it’s sex. Women have been selling it for as long as we’ve been able to barter, and as long as they’re compensated to their satisfaction for doing so, it’s all just part of the business. Women like Gina understand this better than pretty much everyone.

However unfortunate, or fortunate that may be, it is probably realistic. Look at the olympics, I pop open Yahoo today and the headline is about some hot female javelin tosser (yes a real javeline!). This is just the world we live in. People aren’t amazed at an ugly chick kicking ass, but they are when it is a hot chick.

Actually, I think there is a point buried in all this gender-issue stuff.
People aren’t amazed at an ugly chick kicking ass, but they are when it is a hot chick.
I’m just speaking for myself, but there is a legitimate reason for this phenomenon.
Hot women can easily just cruise by on their good looks, especially in the USA where they pull a five-year-plan and are set for life at some (usually not literally) poor guy’s expense. It’s almost like the default factory setting, if you will. It’s what we see time and again.
When a woman like Gina (who is NOT mega-attractive, but she IS attractive and feminine, believe it or not) steps into something like MMA, or American Gladiators, it makes me respect her so much more than a ‘fugly’ woman because I know that she doesn’t HAVE to do this. There’s no real automatic motivation, it’s not like she’s dog-looking with a man’s body, and it makes perfect sense. She’s got porn-star looks all-around, and she decided to train and compete in one of the most physically demanding sports in the world.
When she is literally turning her back on simply trading on her looks (actually, directly placing said looks in harm’s way) in order to display her martial acumen, it gains my respect.
And I’m not what you’d call a Gina Carano fan. Haven’t ever seen her fight live.
There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.

There is even a reason for it in men fighters. Take De La Hoya for example. Most men old enough to constantly buy ppv’s are either married or in a relationship. Most women complain about sports that bore them, and can aggravate the man into submission or doing something else and hearing about it from his friends. Yet a large amount of women viewers don’t mind watching good looking men compete. My wife has plenty of friends who don’t know much about sports but know certain men. Derek Jitter, Oscar De La Hoya, Andrei Agassi ect. This goes on in all sports be it soccer, football, combat whatever. Looks sell.

I don’t think Kelly lives up to any hetero mans standards. And it does seem like mostly women of questionable gender origin or preference fight in mma. Yes we as a people are shallow. Even in male fighters, looks help sell them to the general public. However that wasn’t my point. My point is many of these female fighters were unknown or uncared about, until Gina came on the scene. Even the ‘best’ female fighters seem to only talk about her lately. Yet I don’t hear tons of respect or appreciation for her. Guess it’s kinda like people love to hate Dana.

Really though, how much different is it than the Kimbo phenomenon?
I mean, how many of CBS’ viewers gave a damn about MMA fighters before being spoon-fed Kimbo Slice in prime-time? Now they’ve got their ‘star,’ and I’m sure all kinds of water-cooler debate goes on about the guy after his fights air. It’s the nature of any type of entertainment medium.
Take actors in Hollywood, for instance. Everyone knows who Matt Damon is, or Brad Pitt, but not too many people are really familiar with a guy like Philip Seymour Hoffman until he has his own ‘breakout’ mainstream role. Guys like him can be putting up astonishing performances, better even than the main star of a movie, for a decade or more before they get recognition. But while they may rock in their roles during that time, people still only care to talk about Matt Damon or Brad Pitt.
Difference in MMA, or any combat sport, is the fighters can literally take a portion of their opponent’s reputation during a fight. They don’t even have to win in order to accomplish this, but winning certainly helps. But only so much reputation can be exchanged during one fight, since marketing campaigns instill a certain amount of appeal that can’t be transferred. A fighter like Carano fits this description perfectly. Beating her will certainly help ANY fighter’s reputation, but she’ll maintain a lot of her credibility simply because of the extra marketing efforts that have gone into making her on-screen persona.
There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.

Yes and Yes. An ugly girl who is an awesome fighter will never bring in viewers. It might sound mean, but it’s the honest truth. Exactly how long has womens MMA been around? I know that it’s only been relevant since Gina’s been fighting.

Men's faces don't seem to make nearly as much difference
to women (especially post-teens), compared to physical fitness and that Alpha Dog persona/aura/whatever. They can smell it through the TV, and I’d guess that’s what most women find attractive about these guys.
