Gina Carano vs. Kelly Kobold-Gavin Likely for EliteXC's Next CBS Show
NBC Sports (kind of) confirms the rumor that's been swirling since earlier this week:
Popular EliteXC female fighter Gina Carano will likely take on Kelly Kobold-Gavin when she returns to the cage on CBS's Oct. 4 production, a source close to one of the fighters told NBCSports.com.
The fight has not yet been officially signed but is expected to be announced soon, according to the source.
Can't say this comes as a huge surprise. Even if Carano vs. Cris "Cyborg" Santos (5-0) is the match-up everyone wants to see following the Brazilian's vicious thumping of Shayna Baszler last weekend, the tough veteran Kobold-Gavin comes carrying a substantial 16-2-1 record and -- more importantly for EliteXC's purposes -- hasn't fought since August 2007. Kobold-Gavin's last two bouts (both for BodogFight, R.I.P.) were the only two losses of her career thus far, having been submitted and decisioned by Tara LaRosa and Julie Kedzie, respectively, in a span of just over one month. Carano defeated Kedzie six months prior at EliteXC's inaugural event.
Two things for certain: Kelly had better be working her wrestling hard up there in Minnesota between now and October 4th, and Gina should probably just start cutting weight now.
After the jump, video of Carano (aka "Crush") absolutely mauling a 52-year old woman on American Gladiators last month.

I thought that Kobold/LaRosa was an amazing fight. I don’t know if Kobold’s layoff will be a huge factor. It should be a pretty good test for Gina. The fact that Kedzie beat Kobold doesn’t mean it will be an easy fight for EXC’s lovely heroine. That kind of fight math is retarded. I’m not saying that figured into EXC’s decision.
Word, no fight math here, I just thought it was interesting. It’s a solid match, looking forward to seeing Kobold again, but I think the it favors Carano with her size and Muay Thai. (Not positive but I would think she has a decent reach advantage in this one?)
For the record, I think Gina will finally make weight this time.
I knew you weren’t down with the fight math craziness. There are some clowns commenting on another sight that are already saying this is going to be a cakewalk for Gina. To be honest, I’ve only seen Kobold fight once – against LaRosa. Kobold was able to hang on the ground a long time in the face of numerous sub attempts. That’s where she needs to take this fight if she wants the win. Standing with a better striker is lunacy. Gina will beat most other women up on her feet…and look good doing it. I hope Gina does make weight. I’ll make a note of your prediction.

Here’s a great HL of Kelly, who’s pretty tough to find footage on…

What is Elite Thinking ????
IT does not matter if this fight is a cake walk or a war the bottom line is Elite is blowing a HUGE chance to put on a fight that every one in the MMA world wants to see. That would out a dou’t bring in ratings for them. What gets me is Elite themselfs were building up the Fans for a Gina-vs-Cyborg fight after cyborgs victory from what they did buy showing Gina’s reaction and then interviewing her right after the fight askinhg her what she thought. This just makes no sence what so ever to me.This whole last week every one has been talking about the what if’s in a Carano and Cyborg fight. This future match up has been getting tons of hype and then Elite goes and does this UNREAL. Sure you can say they are going to build up a future match between Carano-vs-Cyborg even more down the Raod after Cyborg takes out another can with a highlight reel KO but the problm with that is who knows if they will even have a 4th show on cbs the way things are going ?? You Blew a huge Chance right Hear Elite this just might of been the biggest Womens fight ever talked about in MMA history ????
I was never convinced that Gina/Cyborg would happen in October. First, they probably do want to build more anticipation for the potential showdown. I understand your point. They really need a good rating for the next show. Second, the suits may see this as a less dangerous opponent for their star. I don’t know if this is actually the case, but I can only imagine what they’re thinking.
One thing I’m wondering is if there are that many people clamoring for a Gina/Cyborg fight. Sure, that’s been a big topic on MMA blogs, but do most Gina fans care who she fights? Her appeal is always talked about as being “mainstream.” Not that many people watched Cyborg defeat Baszler. Yeah, they can run the footage over and over again, but I think the potential fight would be much bigger if there had been a decent number of people watching last Saturday. Unfortunately for EXC, they need to sort of temper their long-term plans, and focus more on survival for the time being. They may be building for a fight that never gets a chance to happen…under the EXC banner, anyway.

I wholeheartedly agree. This was the only EXC fight on the horizon for me. I love Kobold, but Cyborg/Carano has the makings of the kind of fight EXC needs right now.

the tough veteran Kobold-Gavin comes carrying a substantial 16-2-1 record
That’s true, but if you look at the people she’s faced a lot of them didn’t have a fight before they fought Kelly and haven’t had one since.
Definitely, which is why I think it’s important to note her losses to LaRosa and Kedzie, the two biggest tests of her career up until now. But even with that, she’s got more experience than most female fighters out right now, and there’s no denying she’s a tough gal with great power and above-average submissions.
Pro Elite: We Hate Money
The idea that Gina’s “not ready” for Cyborg is ridiculous. This is a harder fight for her because Cyborg would have stood with her, and Gina is a far better and more polished striker. She will end up getting taken down here, and could easily lose via submission. Seriously stupid, and sadly typical.
The Carano/Kobold fight was in the works before the Baszler/Cyborg fight. Like others say, Elite XC will most likely give Gina and Cyborg one more fight before they fight each other, this allows them to hype the fight everyone wants to see.
Also to Cannon J – Kaitlin Young was not coming off a loss when she fought Gina.
She lost to Sara Schneider in a Bodog event. I remember seeing clips from the fight. According to Sherdog’s Fight Finder, that was Young’s last fight before she faced Carano.

Yes you’re right…sorry about that man, i guess i confused her with her other opponents that were not coming off loses. But like you stated, those were before she was with Elite XC.

gina carano seemed to be an overated fighter but this fight is going to be a GOOD test for gina because she is fighting a experience fighter that has a mma record of 16-1 so I hope it will be an exiting fight and I am looking forward to this event. Cyborg seems to have a body of a man with steroid injected in her and they need to test her for steroid before fighting carano, just to be fair.
