Tito Ortiz and Randy Couture Flashback

With all the talk lately about trash talk and hype, it's worth looking back at the way the UFC hyped Tito Ortiz vs. Randy Couture.  This is honestly kind of embarrassing to watch because it's so forced and unnatural, but relatively entertaining nontheless.

The second video is Tito's post-fight interview after the loss.  Seeing Dana refer to Tito as his friend is really weird considering what we hear now.

So, could one argue that Randy Couture has “failed as a champion” what with his not being “willing to step up and fight whoever” the UFC “puts in front of him”? I hear “that’s what a champion does,” after all.

There is a bit of irony there. That whole display was pretty ridiculous. I’d rather not see more of that.

Don’t worry, Brock will be much better at this sort of thing. He brings expertise.

I’ve been talking shit about Randy for a while and I always felt weird about it – I guess it was because I was plagiarizing him to do it!

Ironically, shit like this is what got the UFC over the top. If it wasn’t for Best Damn, UFC 40 would not have gone off like it had, and they likely never would have got as far as they did so quickly from UFC 52 on

Here are the totally unofficial PPV buy estimates from that era

UFC 43 Couture vs. Liddell 49,000
UFC 44 Couture vs. Ortiz 94,000
UFC 45 Tank vs. Cabbage 40,000
UFC 46 Couture vs. Belfort 77,000
UFC 47 Ortiz vs. Liddell 104,000

Man!

Good stuff…thanks for that. Definitely is pretty wierd to see Dana talk like that.

It’s weirder for me to see Dana with hair.

And what a majestic, flowing mane it was.

Yea… Dana with hair is creepy. It’s nice to know he finally realized it wasn’t coming back. Bald is beautiful they say. I say no.

great post

Man i love this website. This was a great flashback. It just makes me hate Tito even more. He’s so disrespectful and full of crap. I hope to God he never fights again. He’s all mouth and hasn’t backed it up since his last Shamrock fights. And if you ask me those should even count. Beating up an old man doesn’t prove anything. He got lucky with the decision against Forrest and if he didn’t grab the fence against Evans it wouldn’t have been a draw. Man i wish he’d fight Chuck again so he’d get his butt whooped one more time. I’m so sick of his complaining about not making money and the fighters not being treated right. Bull crap you make millions while I and a lot of the world makes thousands. Be greatful for what you have and stop your complaining!!!! I’m just getting started!

Wasn’t Randy pissed at Tito for not defending his title back then?

by Tommy7 on Aug 16, 2008 1:04 PM EDT reply actions

yes randy mentions it a couple times in the video. Tito ducked chuck because he knew he’d get his butt whooped!
