Quote of the Day: Dana White Trashes Tim Sylvia

"He’s not the best pound-for-pound fighter, not even close, but he’s one of the four or five best heavyweights...But we all have to thank him for getting rid of Tim Sylvia. He’d been stinking out the joint the last couple of years and Fedor did everyone a favor by beating him so easily and getting rid of him."
-- Dana White, in a new Kevin Iole column, thanking Emelianenko for "getting rid" of Sylvia. Interestingly, Emelianenko somewhat corroborates White's assessment by saying he doesn't consider himself the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world either.
Oh yeah, so much for Sylvia returning to the Octagon to finish out his career. I suspect White might be holding his tongue in the event Arlovski returns, however.
UPDATE by Kid Nate: I went ahead and added a pic from Tim Sylvia's stinkiest moment ever in the Octagon.

I'm disappointed in Dana...
…usually he doesn’t wait a month like this to trash a guy after a loss like that :)

This isn’t about Sylvia.
This is trying to deflate the value of Fedor by diminishing his win over Tim.
And thanks for the craptastic picture, lol!

I agree. How Dana can say one of his most successful champions was “stinking out the joint” is absolutely pathetic. What does that say about his roster for the past couple years?

Nah..
Sylvia won fights because of his long arms and conservative approach. I don’t think it says much about the UFC product. Arlovski was befuddled by Sylvia and I still consider Arlovski the far superior fighter. Truth is, because Sylvia won the title twice, he is one of the most overrated MMA fighters in the history of the sport (if not the single most).

Do you credit Coleman for being a champion in the early years since he primarily used his size and wrestling to win? He also relied on a physical trait and a conservative approach to secure a win. Like Sylvia, he started out strong and devolved to being “boring”.
Just because a fighter has a certain physical ability that others can’t solve and uses a conservative gameplan it doesn’t make them less of a fighter. It is everyone else (allegedly the best in the word) who has to learn how to solve the puzzle, not the puzzle that has to change so everyone else has a chance to win.

You’re right, but what always annoyed me about Silvia is how you just KNEW he had more in his toolbox that he never brought out. He smacked of being conservative not because it was the best way to win, but because he was terrified to take a risk and lose. I look at the last GSP fight and see a guy who pulled every tool he had out of that box; he didn’t finish, but he sure as hell wasn’t boring. Then I look at a guy like Clay Guida, who doesn’t have anywhere near the kind of physical advantages that Silvia or GSP have, and certainly doesn’t have the massive power of Big Tim, but who pulls out all the stops, all the time. He’s a guy who WANTS to win, but isn’t SCARED of losing.
I guess when I saw a massive guy with huge power, fundamentally sound boxing skills, and a history of laying people out, who also never seemed to develop much of a ground game and ended up spending most of his fights by pushing people up against the fence from the clinch, I just wonder why he didn’t A) improve his skill set each time out and B) bring the kind of effort later in his UFC career that he did in the beginning.

Disagree
Maybe Dana values the same things I do, and I value well rounded fighters. Nobody can argue that Sylvia is that. Obviously Dana values his wallet. And Sylvia didn’t make it any larger. Winning fights is great— and for a time it made Sylvia considered a top ten heavyweight. He’s a heavy that’s best at fighting heavy’s (as in, legit heavy’s; lumbering heavy’s). But he doesn’t bring a lot to the table beyond that. I sort of always saw him as a freak-show fighter based on his size and reach.
If you’re infering that there’s a universal understanding of a fighter’s value, than I disagree.

And I would love to see AA beat Barnett and Fedor, then return to the UFC and get PAID. That would be sweet justice, lol.

This has more to do with an interview Tim did saying the UFC doesn’t treat its fighters well.

free agency being the wave of the future...
Someone should ask tim how the whole free agency thing is doing for him…
He’s not on affliction 2 cuz they dont want to pay his ass and neither does adrenaline.

...
I understand that Dana White wants to discount the value of certain fighters, but lately it just sounds childish. I don’t think much of Sylvia, but to bash the guy like he’s been doing is pathetic, considering there’s still alot of people who like the guy for whatever reason, and I do envision a time when he fights for UFC again.
regarding the comment above about arlovski. White knows that arlovski is the one that got away. I envision HUGE things for Andre, and who knows, he just may be the guy who helps to put one of these other promotions on the map. I mean, he’s a good face for any organization and he’s proven he’ll do the work it takes to get better, so he’s not a one and done again. I hope he doesn’t prove me wrong in the next fight though ;)

Sometimes, Dana White shows some redeeming qualities...
Like his support of Rampage, or the way he made fun of that Crazy Corrie chick. Then he says something like this and ruins it all.

I don't know..
..I’ve always appreciated Dana’s boundless honesty. And who’s to say what really happened with Sylvia leaving? Dana usually has a reason (good and bad alike) to bash a guy. He can’t have his opinion on the quality of a fighter that doesn’t fight for him anymore? There’s no code of honor and, hey, they released the guy. Seriously, what does that say of what they thought about his value and ability? Don’t see much controversy here..

Mcmahon playbook
Remember when Hogan testified and save Mcmahon’s ass… then right after Mcmahon ripped Hogan up in the press.
Nothing personal… just business.

Im stuck at work so I don’t have time to read the whole column, but the quote makes it look like Dana is saying that Fedor is one of the 4 or 5 best Heavyweights.
If Fedor is one of the 4 or 5 best Heavyweights then the UFC is one of the 4 or 5 best MMA promotions.

Well..
..then both are true if you’re not placing them specifically.
Dana has no obligation to pump up Fedor.

I know they are both true, thats the point I’m making. Saying it like that is an insult to Fedor and the intelligence of the MMA fans reading the quote. He comes off sounding like a bitter a-hole.

Not everyone has to concede that Fedor is the king of heavyweights. Let’s be fair, a lot of people were questioning his credentials before he crushed Sylvia, including Dana. He’s actually come a long way since saying he didn’t consider him a top heavyweight. Maybe he beat’s AA or Barnett and Dana says “Alright, he’s the best”. You expected he’d come all the way home after one fight against a guy he doesn’t like much?

Dana white is not gonna pump up Fedor til he signs the dotted line..until then he’s just a good heavyweight..once he signs trust me ..Dana will call him the greatest ever..what I think would be a good fight is Spyder verse fedor..If he came in within 10-15 lbs of fedor that would be fight of the Year for sure!!

That fight would never happen. They’re far enough away in weight that they wouldn’t want to encourage that match up; where, in essence, they could kill one legend. They’ll only do things like that where they’re inevitable (Couture and Lidell). Cool dream fight though, for sure..

They say spyder walks around at 225 and at 6-2 with his range he might give a 6-0 230 fedor a good run..but yes thats a fight that will never happen..but if UFC got fedor in the future and spyder runs out of victims then i wouldnt be suprised if dana put that together..

What he walks around at and his chosen weight class are quite different. He’s said he’ll come up to Light Heavy for big fights, but not contend for the title, and keep competing in the title picture at 185.

I find it very amusing that anyone is putting weight on Fedor’s own assessment of himself. He is a humble guy, of course he isn’t going to proclaim himself as the greatest of all time. The idea that he is “corroborating” Dana’s negative spin is laughable

No one is talking about the greatest of all time, just the p4p best right now.
As for the corroboration, well, of course he isn’t co-signing on Dana’s specific statement. I’m using the term loosely, which is plenty appropriate. What’s critical is that if Fedor doesn’t regard himself as the best, then who does he? Insofar as there’s overlap, there is also corroboration, though not in the strictly literal sense.
So, please: give up the perfunctory insults where completely fair analysis is “laughable”. Very little of BE’s work is. Use it only when appropriate.
