Quote of the Day: Matt Hughes
"The last fight of the night was Georges [St. Pierre] and [Jon] Fitch. Georges didn’t look as big as he has before and he seemed like he had gotten tired from the first round. Fitch had the game plan of countering Georges and you just can’t do that. You can’t counter a quicker fighter. To be honest, halfway in the third round I got up and walked out of the arena and went to my hotel. The fight wasn’t the most exciting and I wanted to get out of there before everyone else was getting up to leave."
-- Matt Hughes, talking about his UFC 87 experience on his personal blog.
(For what it's worth, he did pick GSP to win in the previous post.)

Yeah, he’s always had issues with his pride and ego. Nothing worse than a sour ex-champ.

It must be painful to watch a championship match knowing that you’ll never be there again.

I don’t know if it’s sour grapes or just honesty. I felt the same way about the main event. I got up and fixed myself a sandwich toward the end…knew absolutely how it was going to end, just like everybody else.

I was feeling the same way in the 3rd round. Total domination by GSP! In the 5th round the announcers were calling the fight in the bag.
I thought this was MMA where anything could happen up until the last second, but this fight didn’t look that way

I really thought GSP looked more gassed than usual after the 1st round. Don’t get me wrong – he was still able to fight at the same level as most other fighters, but it didn’t seem like his normal GSP level. I chalked it up to the fact that he had to maintain a wide stance and be cautious with his strikes to protect himself from being taken down.
Did anyone else see this?

Maybe..
that he’s against better competition.. when you’re fighting someone who’s at least at your level of skill and athleticism, your performance will be relatively lower than against those who’re way below your level.. So, in the case of Mr. Hughes, the GSP he fought with was faster, bigger and stronger relative to the one Mr. Fitch fought with. Maybe there’s just a relative major difference with the skill and athleticism between GSP’s opponents in those two fights..

GSP caught his wind in Rd 2 after expending tons of energy smashing Fitch in Rd 1 going for the stoppage.
All other rounds saw GSP pushing the pace, looking as quick as ever, and out-conditioning another fighter who has amazing cardio. GSP was as quick in Rd 5 as he was in Rd 1. Anyone who thinks his cardio was lacking earns a major FAIL.
And LOL at Hughes thinking GSP looked smaller. I guess guys look smaller when you’re looking at them from the stands instead of when they’re on top of you elbowing you in the face.

I too think
that GSP trying to Finish fitch is what winded him in the 1st and when GSP realized Fitch is just gonna keep coming back he set a different pace

Hughes is still and always be a douche bag.. He’s still bent about being KO’d by Alves (who will soon be champ). He never has and never will give credit when it’s deserved.

Hughes is that old lion, who senses that his days are numbered. He has a bad taste in his mouth from the beatings that he took from GSP. He’s used to being top dog, and he does not know how to handle being just average, which is what he is now. He was a great champion. The game has passed him by. It’s just evolution. Get over it Matt. I hate to say this, but I hope Serra knocks him out.

Why?
I dont hate to say it, I LOVE to say that I hope Serra beats his ass and then submits him.

Indeed – let the beatings commence! I’m not fan of Serra’s personality, but ANYONE grates on my nerves less than Matt Hughes.
Except Brock, of course. :-)
