US Olympic Judo Coverage

I am currently writing from Okinawa City, Japan.  I'm sitting in my hotel room after my shift at work thinking.  I'm thinking about how when I left my hotel this morning, there was Judo coverage on two channels.  I got back to my hotel and there is still Olympic Judo coverage on as I speak.

It's amazing to watch.  What I'm witnessing right now is some of the most technical grappling I've ever seen.  Now I could be wrong, but before I left I heard that NBC was cutting Judo out of the events it was going to cover.  If this is true, it is truly a travesty of epic proportions.  I wish that all MMA fans could watch what I am watching right now.   I think that any true fan of the sport, or any combat sport for that matter could use a refresher on the technicality and precision that these athletes use.  As well as get a better understanding of the sport of MMA as a whole.

Since I'm gone until after the games are over, could somebody let me know if NBC is or is not covering Judo.  And if they are...I encourage everybody to watch it.

I don’t think NBC has shown any at all. CNBC/UniversalHD maybe.

It’s 6am here in NYC, watching the Women’s 57kg and Men’s 73kg online right now. NBCOlympics.com rules.

Here’s some matches with Min Ho Choi, who took home a gold yesterday. Just nasty stuff.

if you find...

suzuki lose to some guy from mongila… no way was it an ippon… yuko maybe but not an ippon.

there was also fight with in the womens final – pretty sure it was under 70kg – where a girl hoped out of uchimata and then stepping in for her own uchimata straight away. was meant to be quite spectacular…
anyway, in your travels if you find these fights please pass it along.

congrads to rousey on her bronze medal. how is that girl?

Will do man. Unfortunately NBC has been brutal in cracking down on Olympic vids on YouTube, but they’ve gotta be tucked away someplace.

As for Ronda Rousey, our esteemed editor Luke is trying to get her on his radio show where he will convince her to get into MMA.

sucks

even the torrents are protected, or have no seeds…

I don’t get why NBC doesn’t want it on Youtube when they didn’t show any themselves.

Streams...

If anyone wants a link to full streams of both the men & women’s brackets for all weight classes, shoot me an email. (It’s on the sidebar.) Should be up and running in a couple days.

I was disappointed..

last night they promised to show “judo; wrestling” in a time block. They showed ONE judo match…

So I must go back to watching womens indoor volleyball :)

Oh man. I too have discovered the wonders of women’s indoor volleyball during these games.

Luckily the live streaming on nbcolympics.com is around. I stayed up til 6 am (central time) to watch the finals. I enjoyed watching the lightning fast Brazilian who took the bronze.

LAST NIGHT OF JUDO!

Mongolia’s win last night was fantastic. Not so sure about the judging on a lot of those fights though..

Tonight, the big boys and girls: Men’s 100+kg/220+ lbs and Women’s 78+kg/172+ lbs.

I really wish that they had showed it. They showed fencing, but not judo… have you ever seen fencing? Boring as hell

There was some good stuff on the last day – Teddy Riner was eliminated in the quarters I believe (pretty big shocker as he came in as world champion) and China got ippon trailing Japan with :15 left in the women’s gold medal match.

Don't have much to add here

except to echo that high-level judo is incredibly technical and so fun to learn and incorporate that it’s infectious. We had a Japanese exchange student during my first year on the HS wrestling team and he taught everyone some really sound fundamental throws and how to work clinches in close without losing leverage. He wasn’t great at it, but he was good enough that he could throw wrestlers around pretty easily until we learned the intricacies of his body position. Totally different from collegiate wrestling, at least it seemed that way at the time.

There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.
