My Scorecard: Rampage WON!
My Scorecard: Rampage WON!
I feel like a lonely man on an isolated Island, but I scored this fight for Rampage Jackson. I have only seen the fight once, and this is my initial reaction, but I thought it important to get this down in print first. I scored this 48-47 or 47-47, depending on if you score the second round 10-8 for Forrest, and I couldn’t argue with that score. At worst this was a draw in my book, and I think I am going to need someone to explain to me how Forrest’s kicks scored more than Quinton’s power shots. That seems to be the only reason why Forrest won as far as I can tell, and quite frankly I think Rampage did more damage than Forrest did to him. The first two rounds were definitive, but the last three are open for interpretation. I scored the first, third, and forth rounds decisively for Rampage. Forrest won the second and probably the fifth, and if he got a 10-8 round in the second the worst this should have been was a draw. I am not declaring a complete disaster here, I definitely need to re-watch this a few times before I can confidently confirm or deny my initial thoughts. I know I am probably in the minority here, but I just wanted to know if anyone else sees it like I did. I think the bottom line either way, the rematch has to happen and very soon.
P.S. One more thing, I can't make up my mind of Rampage fought that badly or is Forrest really that good? Thoughts?

Can't help ya
I can’t really help you because I haven’t seen the fight yet. Is Forrest that good? Apparently, he was good enough last night, but time will tell. I think that there are plenty of fighters at 205 that can beat Forrest, and they are all probably salavating right now. I think that the UFC is going to use Forrest as much as they can to promote their brand. Theyre probably setting up interviews with ESPN, and other television apperances, as we speak.

Close but forrest won
I watched the fight last night and I had forrest winning 3 rounds to 2.
Rd 1 – I gave to rampage only because he clipped forrest and was on top the last minute, I think forrest was actually winning that round before that. 10-9 Jackson
Rd 2 – All Forrest from start to finish. After that hugh leg kick he controlled and was on top the whole round. 10-9 Forrest, but very close to a 10-8
Rd 3 & Rd 4 – These two rounds were very similar in the Forrest controlled from the outside and landing more punches. Jackson did get forrest down but even there Forrest was working the submissions and had him caught a few times. Jackson again landed more power shot but Forrest did more. I gave each one round here
Rd 5 – By this time Forrest was in control and was picking his shots and landing. Rampage was backing up a lot and throwing for the fences. Forrest was the aggressor, controlled the octagon and out striked Jackson. Jackson landed a few power shot but Forrest was never in trouble. 10-9 Forrest
Thats makes it 48-47 Forrest or 48-46 Forrest if the second was scored 10-8.

In my mind
who ever won the last round won the Fight, and Forrest was clearly the aggressor until the last 60 seconds. I had $100 on Rampage and I still thought Forrest won. Rampage just didn’t explode after the second round
all you gotta do is...

Rampage won that fight…he won rounds 1, 3, and 4….how the judges gave Griffin a 10-8 for round 2 is beyond me….yea he mounted Rampage….but he did NO damage whatsoever to him the whole time on the ground.

Jackson landed a whopping 0 strikes in Round 2. He was struck something like 40 times by Forrest while being completely out-grappled. 10-8 seems rather appropriate.

lol?
The guy was dominated the whole round…

This is exactly how I scored the fight. Rds 1, 3, and 4 to Rampage.
Rd 2 was positionally dominant for Forrest, but he inflicted little damage (neither hurt Rampage nor inflicted aesthetic damage). Forrest didn’t create enough space from mount to do big damage, because doing so would’ve given Rampage the room to scramble.

People keep acting like Forrest didn’t do anything other than gain mount. He landed more power strikes in that round than Jackson did in any round and he did so in a round where Jackson landed not even one strike.

LOL…no way in hell forrest landed more power shots in round 2 than Jackson did in any round.

By Fight Metric’s numbers he did. I didn’t personally sit and count.

And
Rampage still landed more power shots for the entire fight…

By four. Griffin landed 40 more total strikes. Is a 10% edge in power strikes more impressive than a 55% advantage in total strikes?
by Richard Wade on Jul 7, 2008 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No, he gained mount and chipped away with short punches and then rubbed his elbow on Rampage’s face. He didn’t raise up and try to smash Rampage with damaging shots, like GSP did to Hughes in their 3rd fight (forcing Hughes to turtle up, and giving a shot at the RNC).
When you stay chest to chest in the mount, never raise up, and are throwing short rabbit punches or rubbing elbows on a guy’s face, those aren’t power strikes.

Rampage Won...Period.
Before I start, let me say that I’m a big Griffin fan. While his loss to Jardine was inexcusable, his victory over Shogun was enough to put him into MMA elite with no argument whatsoever. Now that being said, he should not be wearing that belt. Here’s why:
1. The champ must be defeated DECISIVELY. To take a belt, you have to kick the champ’s ass, leaving no doubt at all. This has always been the case in boxing, MMA, Kick boxing, or any other combat sport. This was not at all the case last night.
2. “Activity and Octagon Control” vs. “Power Shots” and “DAMAGE”...activity and control are important. No doubt about it. But for me, they pale in comparison to who lands more TRULY EFFECTIVE blows and does more damage. Other than his legit leg kicks (and they were great), Griffin did little other damage to Rampage. Not only that, but those kicks stopped after round two and Rampage showed serious “stones” in fighting through that damage and fighting very well for the remaining three more rounds with a bum leg. Now on the other hand, what I saw was this: Rampage with a devastating right upper cut knock down in the first (almost knocked him out), Rampage opening up a massive gash over Griffin’s right eye in he fourth, Rampage with two legit and clean take downs, and Rampage landing far more Power Shots throughout the fight. Does Rampage not get any credit for “checking” the majority of Forests punches and “activity” throughout the fight?
3. Triangle? Enough Already! Speaking of giving Rampage credit, why did noone (including the complete “Griffin-biased” Joe Rogan) make note of the fact that Rampage, stood upright from his knees while bearing Griffin’s 205 lbs around his neck and slammed him WHILE WITHIN A TRIANGLE! Certainlyu don’t see that everyday, and yet not a word about it. Furthermore, the triangle attempt (and let’s not forget it was only an unsuccessful attempt) came after Rampage rocked Forest and took him down.
By the way…what’s the story where Rampage and the UFC are concerned? The guy has gotten no respect from the UFC since he got there a little more than two years ago. He K.O.s there reigning poster boy Lidell and gets no love. He defeats one of the sport’s most complete fighters Dan Henderson with a very disciplined and technical game plan (yes it was a boring fight) and gets no love. In fact, throughout Rampage’s entire term as champion, Lidell was promoted more prominently, despite Rampage being the champ. Then last night…from the start of the evening, Joe Rogan and Goldy were gushing over Griffin. I recall being appalled when Rogan said, “the important thing here is that Forest is winning this fight.” I was watching the same fight and couldn’t believe that he said that so emphatically. I’ve always liked Rogan, but last night I thought he was terribly favoring Griffin from the start.
Too bad for Quinton Jackson. He should be wearing that belt and getting the $100,000 winner’s bonus. As far as what typically dictates someone winning a fight and kicking someone’s ass, I believe Rampage was the winner. Obviously, the UFC has been dying to see their Ultimate Fighter poster boy get his belt, and it looks like they succeeded. I’m not going to say this was fixed. Not at all. It was too good a fight to even imply that. But I will say this. Quinton’s a former PRIDE mega-star. He’s not purely a UFC guy. And we all know that Forest has been developed and primed for stardom by the UFC from day one. Dana White is a control freak. You do the math.

Just to sum up...
Rounds 2 and 5 clearly went to Griffin. Rounds 1 and 4 clearly went to Jackson. Round 3 was a toss-up with Griffin setting the pace and landing more shots and Jackson landing more “power” shots. Depending on whether you think power shots matter more than setting the pace and landing more shots overall, you can score Round 3 for either fighter. I don’t understand how anyone can be all that upset over the result of this fight.
There are several perfectly legitimate ways to have scored this fight.
48-46 Griffin, with a 10-8 Round 2 and Griffin winning Round 3.
48-47 Griffin, with a 10-9 Round 2 and Griffin winning Round 3.
47-47 Draw, with a 10-8 Round 2 and Jackson winning Round 3.
48-47 Jackson, with a 10-9 Round 2 and Jackson winning Round 3.
Round three was close and Round 2 being 10-8 was debatable, so any of those outcomes would have been perfectly legitimate. I think we should all just move on at this point.

Not sure if everyone has seen this already, but Sherdog has quite a few fighters weighing in on who they thought won.

Rampage did not TOUCH Griffin in the 2nd round

When you don’t even attempt to attack your opponent in a round…how is that NOT a 10-8 score?
