Sorry for the delay in finishing up the June Meta-rankings. We'll get them out faster in July.

Not a lot of surprises in this months Lightweight ranks. B.J. Penn is viewed by most as the top lightweight in the world but not everyone agrees yet. I think this is a hangover of the attitude that he hadn't fought in the division in a long time and because none of the fighters he's beaten in his current UFC 155lb run -- Pulver, Stevenson, Sherk -- have competed recently against any of the top Japanese fighters that have dominated the rankings in this division for most of the decade. Gomi has lost a bit of luster due to competing in WVR's Sengoku and facing less than stellar competition. Personally I thought losing to Diaz (NC, whatever) and Aurelio knocked him off the top spot a long time ago. He just hasn't been the same fighter since 2005.

Aoki's run at the DREAM grand prix title has his stock rising. If he gets past Uno and Alvarez/Kawajiri, he'll likely contend with Penn for the consensus #1. If any of the other fighters in the tourny wins it all, they'll rise of course, but I won't expect them to make #1 anytime soon. Alvarez has the most to gain and could catapult way up there off a strong performance in DREAM followed by a big performance for Elite XC.

These rankings were mostly issued before Melendez lost to Josh Thomson. I meant to catch them all before that fight happened, sorry. Next month as the impact of that fight sinks in, Melendez will drop further and Thomson will rise accordingly. No idea what's next for Gilbert, hopefully he'll sign on with DREAM or WVR and face some top talent in Japan. I'd be surprised if the UFC signed him off two straight losses. Ishida's stock will fall further due to Melendez's loss -- beating Gilbert was his biggest feat. Josh Thomson has an unfortunately limited pool of competition in Strikeforce. Would love to see him go up against Gomi or take on K.J. Noons in Elite XC.

I expect the winner of Florian/Huerta will rise considerably.

Star-divide

This is a purer and simpler Meta-Rankings, and we believe the most accurate informative rankings anywhere on the web.

Because opinions are like assholes -- everybody has one and they all stink -- we don't put up our own subjective fighter rankings, we compile and average the rankings of every credible or popular source we could find online. The full list of sources is in the extended entry.

Note that the points are out of a possible 210.

We retooled our approach to include more sources. We also eliminated the weighting we were doing to favor statistical and fan-voting sites.

The goal is to show how the MMA community rates the fighters, not to bore you with our opinions.

Note that we only include fighters who made the top ten of one of our source sites.  That creates some obvious distortions at the bottom of our rankings -- Spencer Fisher for example is not even considered top 20 by most sources, but somebody out there considers him a top 10 lightweight.

We combined the following heavyweight top 10 rankings: Wamma, MMA Fighting, MMA-ELO, MMA Ranks, Full Contact Fighter, TAGG Radio, 411 Mania, MMA Weekly, Sherdog, Cage Potato, MMA Madness, MMA on Tap, Five Ounces of Pain, FightMatrix, MMA Playground, HD Net/Inside MMA, MMA-ValeTudo Japan, Brawl Sports, Total MMA, Fighters Magazine and Figure Four Online -- giving 10 points for a first place rank, 1 point for a tenth place ranking.

The following sources were checked but were not current enough for inclusion: MMA News, InsideFighting, World Fight.

We'll drop the hated MMA Ranks from next month's list but I wanted to include them in this ranking for consistency throughout June.

Not sure if we'll have the time and ambition to account for fighters ranked in the top 25 or not, but thanks to BE reader JCS_FM I have a handle on a good way to do it. Thanks!

Not to show my ignorance but...

What are all these other clubs like the UFC from? Are they from overseas and do they fight like the UFC. I thought all along that the UFC was the king of MMA, but I guess that isn’t true huh?

UFC is the king of ultimate fighting.

some are international

DREAM and World Victory Road (WVR) are the major Japanese promotions. Strikeforce is an American promotion based in Northern California with an NBC contract. Shooto is a very old and respected Japanese promotion but its pretty small and is basically a feeder league for young talent now.
UFC is dominant in many weight classes but this is one of their weaker ones. They suspended the division for a couple of years which caused them to fall behind PRIDE—the big Japanese organization from 1997-2007. Now PRIDE is out of business and DREAM and WVR are both trying to be the new #1 in Japan.

Thanks

A real eye opener for this dude. I suppose this means, in UFC fights, that the best aren’t always fighting the best.

the UFC's lightweight division

is as good as anyone’s.
The only division where the UFC champ isn’t the #1 in the world is the heavyweight.

So where is KJ Noons? I know Shaw probably overrates him, but I would think he should be in there somewhere. Is it a 160 thing?

How about a Noons/Alvarez fight after the Dream GP is over? That could be a lot of fun.

No one rates KJ in the top 10

His win over Yves Edwards should get him some respect but I think he’s at least three wins away from making many top 10 lists. It hasn’t been that long ago he was getting KTFO’d by Crazy Horse.

Diaz and Edwards are quality wins, but there is so much talent in the top 20 (and top 30…and top 40…and so on) that it’s tough to move up in the lightweight division without beating someone above you. It’s not an indictment on Noons; he’s been great this past year. If he keeps winning, he’ll get his due.

Although, aside from Nick Thompson, I don’t think most fighters care where they are ranked on various websites. I could be totally wrong, but I would think they’d be more concerned with, oh, I don’t know, training and fighting.

I think he’s at least three wins away from making many top 10 lists.

How did you come up with three? Any particular fighters he must defeat in those matches?

by Brett Jones on Jul 7, 2008 8:15 AM EDT up reply actions

pulled it out of my ass

But I think if he were to beat Nick Diaz in a rematch, clear out the rest of the EliteXC 160’s (and I’m blanking on who they are), and maybe Josh Thomson then he’d be top 10.
What do you think?

by Nate Wilcox on Jul 7, 2008 8:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Noons is a guy who has had two great (and one ok) victories back to back (to back). In my opinion, it won’t take much more to get him to the top 10. A win over Thomson, for example, should put him on the list.

However, I think Thomson, after beating Gilbert Melendez, is a top 10 lightweight himself by virtue of the fact that he beat a top 10 lightweight, and I think that if you beat a top 10 fighter, you are a top 10 fighter. There can be exceptions to this, but it’s awfully rare.

And come on. How do you not remember the rest of the EliteXC 160lbs. division? Muhsin Corbbrey, Thomas Denny, Malaipet Sitpaprom, Edson Berto, KRAZY HORSE (is he still under contract?). Thank goodness for Edwards and Diaz, or Noons would be rubbing ranking elbows with Mark Bocek.

Well, EliteXC has Eddie Alvarez too. Alvarez v. Noons would be a fine match.

by Brett Jones on Jul 7, 2008 10:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Alvarez!

That’s who I was blanking on.
If Noons beats Thomson, Diaz and Alvarez he’d be top 5. Beat two of three and he’s top 10 for sure.
