Quote of the Day: Patrick Cote Thinks He's Tailor Made for Anderson Silva
“I think I have the best style to fight this guy. I have a good chin, I’ll go forward, and I think every time he fights his opponent has already lost because he’s scared of him...I know that this guy is very, very good, but we have a good game plan for the fight, and I’m 100% confident that I will win.”
-- Patrick Cote, exuding confidence before his bout at UFC 90 with current UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva.

Another opponent, another win for Silva. I cant wait for the Spider to beat his ass.
by HoustonRaven on Jul 30, 2008 9:36 AM EDT 0 recs
and by the way ....
why are we not talking about a GSP v. Silva match up? One, if not both of those two, can fudge their weight enough to make that happen.
or is my brain polluted with too much booze?
by HoustonRaven on Jul 30, 2008 9:41 AM EDT 0 recs
Why does everyone, know just how to beat Anderson Silva? I just don’t see how Cote deserves this title shot. Hell I know Canandians who don’t believe he should be allowed to fight the champ.
by Tommy7 on Jul 30, 2008 9:54 AM EDT 0 recs
I am Canadian...
...and I don’t really see how he should be getting a title shot but at the same time he has 5 back to back wins so why not?
Do I think he has a chance? Not really. Could he KO Anderson? Hell yea and I would love to see it.
He is a huge underdog, give the kid a break.
Cote Cote Cote Cote….Cote Cote…
by Fedor on Jul 30, 2008 9:59 AM EDT 0 recs
He is a huge underdog. That’s kind of the point. Huge underdogs should not go around talking about how they are the ones who have exactly the right plan to beat somebody who has already defeated legends like Rich Franklin and Dan Henderson. It makes them look stupid, arrogant, and disrespectful, especially when Silva’s take on the fight is that it’s “an honor” to be fighting Cote. Cote should have learned something from watching Irvin open his mouth with very similar comments.
I hope this fight lasts approximately 30 seconds, too.

What should he say?
“I don’t have a gameplan that will work. He is a better fighter and I have no chance. Now, make sure you watch!”

No. But it’s certainly not required to come out and say you’re “100 percent confident” that you’re going to beat Anderson Silva. It’s entirely possible for even an underdog to come across as respectful, gracious, humble, etc., just like it is for Silva to come across that way. How about saying you’re looking forward to the fight, you’re training hard, you have a gameplan that you think gives you the best chance possible, you’re going to give it your all, he’s a great champion that you’re looking forward to challenging. I could go on and on with lots of things he could say besides saying “everyone else lost because they were afraid, but I can pretty much guarantee that I, Patrick Cote, will beat Silva.” It’s really not that hard to strike a balance.

While I agree...
that many fighters could stand to be more respectful in their interviews, the reality is that an underdog declaring that he has a winning gameplan is probably the least offensive thing I’ve heard in some time.
If Cote’s confidence offended you, how has your head not yet exploded after listening to one BJ Penn interview?

I never said I was “offended” by it. I just think it’s ridiculous that somebody like Cote would talk so much trash while being such an underdog, especially with regard to such a humble and respectful champion. This is on the heels of his comments that he thinks it’ll take 10 unanswered shots from Silva to drop him, while he can drop Silva with just one shot. It doesn’t offend me, it just makes me think Cote is a fool, just like Irvin. It’s not like he’s responding in kind to some trash talking from Silva.
... and there’s no need to even get started on BJ Penn in this discussion. I’m not a fan of his, either. But at least he’s coming from a position of being able to both back up his arrogance in his next fight and having done so in the past—what exactly has Cote ever done to suggest that his current arrogance is warranted? Nothing, really.

I don’t know that he could KO Anderson Silva. I think Cote has the most overrated punching power in the UFC. He hit Almeida with plenty of shots and didn’t knock him out. Meanwhile, Silva has taken big shots from Dan Henderson and Rich Franklin and pushed forward unphased. Cote has nothing for Silva.

So he should go in saying that he is going to lose? If he doesn’t think he has the gameplan to beat Silva why should he get into the ring—regardless of how silly it sounds?
He isn’t disrespecting Silva, just saying they have studied him and found holes in his game to capitalize on—whats wrong with that?
I am sure Silva isn’t losing any sleep over his words—its a fight not a round of golf.

Upsets happen
Diaz def. Gomi
Griffin def. Shogun / Rampage
Jardine def. Liddell
Gonzaga def. Cro Crop
Serra def. GSP
Etc, etc.
We will see what happens, my money would be on Silva but you can’t count Cote out.
by Fedor on Jul 30, 2008 10:23 AM EDT 0 recs
I’ll put a few bucks on Cote to keep the fight interesting.
by lovingmma25 on Jul 30, 2008 10:30 AM EDT 0 recs
I’ll count Cote out. He has no chance of winning and I’ll bet my wife on it. (it’s a win win)
by Tommy7 on Jul 30, 2008 10:32 AM EDT 0 recs
LOL—“no chance”, have you watched MMA in the last two years?
by Fedor on Jul 30, 2008 10:55 AM EDT 0 recs
Cote sounds alot like Chris Leben’s style and remarks. The same Chris Leben who Cote couldn’t finish.
But I’m all for Cote. He’s going to pack the Canadian bars showing the event and it’ll be pandemonium if he wins.

WRONG WRONG WRONG
You doubters will get your answer soon enough, but trust me: Patrick Cote HAS a plan to beat Anderson Silva, and it’s excellent. Surefire, in fact:
He’s sneaking a gun into the cage.

Why do you come on here and say something that ridiculous when you know for a fact he can’t bring a gun in the cage. That’s just silly.
He’s gonna spit red mist in his eyes.

Dude, I’m sure he knows how to conceal a gun. That was GSP’s back-up plan in the second Hughes fight. (Too bad he didn’t have to use it….)
But the red mist idea… I may need to see if I can cut weight to 185 and take on the champ….

What am I thinking I guess. Cote has destroyed all sorts of other top 10 fighters. Men like Paulo Filho, Rich Franklin, Dan Henderson, Yushin Okami, Matt Lindland, Nathan Marquardt, Denis Kang, Robbie Lawler, Murilo Rua, Cung Le. He has only lost to true warriors, men the ilk of Joe Doerksen. I guess it will be just like Cote said, he can take ten direct strikes from Anderson while Silva will crumple from just one of his monster blows. Why should he show the mw and p4p champ any respect?

This fight for Anderson with Patrick Cote=Chris Leben #2 that being said he really should just keep his mouth shut and not say a thing so he does not make a total ASS out of himself after Silvas brutally Ko’s him within 90 seconds.

by lovingmma25 on Jul 30, 2008 12:56 PM EDT 0 recs
Cote was somewhat unwilling to trade with Almeida, or at least Almeida wasn’t overly worried about it. I don’t think Silva has much to worry about.

I thought Almeida did pretty good in the striking aspect of his fight with Cote. You could tell Cote was waiting to get a knockout – but he didn’t come off as having a gameplan. That is why I don’t think he will do that well against Silva.

Cote is real good standing against guys that will just stand up straight and trade with him. He did out punch Drew Mcfedries. Still, he’s going to get hurt badly. I kinda like what he’s saying, makes me want to see him get hurt more.

Didn't Irvin say something similar to this...
... before he got knocked out?
At any rate, I just want to see someone beat Silva. So yeah, I’m cheering on my fellow Canadian in this one.
by pud333 on Jul 30, 2008 11:09 PM EDT 0 recs
Yeah, Irvin said:
"I just don’t see myself losing," Irvin said. "I’m expecting to take a lot of damage. I’m expecting to eat a lot of his shots, but I’ve sparred and trained with guys who hit a lot harder than he hits. I’d rather take three or four of his punches than fight someone like Quinton Jackson, who will just knock you out with either hand. "I don’t think he has that kind of knockout power. I really don’t think he does. I’m not taking anything away from him, because he’s so well-rounded, but I don’t think he has that heavy handed punching power that someone like Scott Smith or Quinton Jackson does."
In his previous quote Cote said:
“It’s gonna take him 10 straight punches to take me down – I only need one punch to take him down. I’m Patrick Cote, I win against grapplers and I knock strikers out. I can’t wait to go to Chicago and take the belt home to Montreal.”
Hopefully he gets a pretty similar response from Silva in the ring as Irvin got.
