UFC 89 on Spike TV, Franklin vs. Hamill Official

According to Dave Meltzer in this week's Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the October 18th UFC show headlined by Michael Bisping v. Chris Leben will be on Spike TV.  He says the PPV that month will probably be the next weekend.

It's hard to think of what they could headline a show with in October on PPV with Hughes injured.  I suppose it could be another Rampage defense, or an Anderson Silva fight.  I feel like it may be smart in the long run to skip a PPV month in October given most people's financial situation right now, but I doubt they will do that.

Dave also confirmed that Rich Franklin vs. Matt Hamill is official for UFC 88.  Unless Anderson Silva actually does fight again on that card, it should be second from the top below Chuck and Rashad.

I would have much rather seen Franklin – Hendo. Oh well.

Franklin/Hendo just doesn’t make sense for Rich at this point. Winning gets him one step closer to a…third fight with Silva that they will never do.

How would a win at 205 get him closer to a title shot at 185?

by Richard Wade on Jul 3, 2008 3:54 AM EDT up reply actions

He would have been fighting Hendo at 185.

Upon further review, I mis-read your comment.

I just don’t see why Rich is going to 205? Maybe it could be for this fight but I don’t see him as a top 205er when he is the 2nd best 185er. Also I have read all over the boards that Hamill is a really easy fight for him, I disagree, I could easily see Hamill out-wrestling him for a victory.

Bad fight. Both of these guys should be climbing their way up in their RESPECTIVE divisions . Franklin doesn’t have to fight Silva again, but he does have to take the wanna-be contenders down a peg. It’d be great to see him against Marquardt or Cote or the winner of Bisping/Leben. Who knows, maybe Quarry will want to rematch him sometime.

by Jaydoggydog on Jul 3, 2008 11:06 AM EDT reply actions

I disagree. Franklin has no fights at 185 other than Marquardt and Henderson, the latter of which could easily take place at 205. It doesn’t make sense to have him go around knocking off contenders when there’s no way he’s getting another crack at Silva.

It makes absolutely no sense to leave Franklin at 185 to beat the Cote’s, Leben’s, Bisbing’s…not while Anderson Silva is the champ. The only legit fight’s he has at 185 is either Marquardt or Hendo.

Yeah, and I don’t really want to see Franklin fight either Marquardt or Hendo right now, primarily because if he wins, they won’t get title shots, and honestly, I want to see someone beat Anderson. Soon. I have nothing against him, but I am very curious to see just what it would take to beat him.
