Aleksander Emelianenko Positive for Hep B; Career in Doubt

Aleksander-emelianenko-bodogfight_mediumMMA News reports:

A source close to the situation spoke to MMANews.com's Michael Moody on a condition of anonymity and explained that the blood tests came back right before Aleks and Buentello were scheduled to weigh in and that is why there was so much confusion around the stage and why the fighters did not weigh in. Gary Goodridge ended up stepping up on extremely short notice and filling in for the Russian heavyweight.

The tests were positive for Hepatitis B which resulted in the CSAC cancelling the fight. ...

A positive Hepatitis B test is no laughing matter and this could spell the end of Aleks' fighting career as many of the people close to the situation pointed out. I can't imagine many fighters willing to step up to fight Aleks with the possibility of catching the disease. He most definitely will not fight in the United States again and it will be interesting to see if this positive test results in organizations from all over the world black listing the brother of heavyweigh king, Fedor Emelianenko.

Some are concerned that the condition will end Aleksander's career but from a quick review of wikipedia, it appears that not all cases are permanent:

Acute hepatitis B infection does not usually require treatment because most adults clear the infection spontaneously.[22] Early antiviral treatment may only be required in fewer than 1% of patients, whose infection takes a very aggressive course ("fulminant hepatitis") or who are immunocompromised. On the other hand, treatment of chronic infection may be necessary to reduce the risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer. Chronically infected individuals with persistently elevated serum alanine aminotransferase, a marker of liver damage, and HBV DNA levels are candidates for therapy.[23]

Although none of the available drugs can clear the infection, they can stop the virus from replicating, and prevent liver damage such as cirrhosis and liver cancer. Treatments include antiviral drugs such as lamivudine, adefovir, tenofovir and entecavir, and immune system modulators such as interferon alpha. However, some individuals are much more likely to respond than others and this might be because of the genotype of the infecting virus or the patient's heredity. The treatment works by reducing the viral load, (the amount of virus particles as measured in the blood), which in turn reduces viral replication in the liver.

Wikipedia isn’t very reliable.

Please blow away this myth

A study has found that Wikipedia is only slightly less reliable than Britanica.

While vandalism happens often, the problem is often corrected within 24 hours.

thank you

wikipedia is an excellent general reference. all facts should be double checked just as with any source. but wikipedia is a great place to get started learning about a new topic.

I’m very pro-Wikipedia.

It has it’s weak spots, notably current events/celebrities, but for strictly factual information, there’s no reason to doubt it.

Ray Mercer and Henry Akinwande were both able to fight in major commission states after treatment for Hep B, though it took a significant period of time.

The damage is done.

I don’t think anyone in their right mind would fight Aleksander now, unless they are really desperate.

This should be an example.

i hope other countries that sanction fights take notice of this and realize how important doing blood tests and proper medical exams before a fight can be for protecting all the fighters.

Also I have to say I am a huge Aleksander fan and this just sucks.

Its a great thought...

...but realistically, its not like people living in developing/third world nations have the money to go get any real medical exams done for fights. If MMA keeps becoming more and more global, its gonna increasingly be a problem.

Japan is going to pay for medical exams in Indonesia, Phillippines, Thailand, India, etc? I find that slightly hard to believe.

japan is where aleks

has fought his entire career. i’m not interested in hypotheticals.

Oh course, what you’re saying has nothing to do with my point, but if it excites you to type, be my guest.

As for Japan and their testing, Tommy Morrison fought in Tokyo against Marcus Rhode when everyone knew he had AIDS in a special rules boxing match that would end instantly for cuts sustained to either fighter. I’m sure you knew that, though.

how to kill all hep c

i’m a chemist not a doctor…but for all of you that ever get concerned…you can kill all forms of hep (a,b,c) with massive dose of vitamin c… i know…sounds crazy…but vit c is a massive redection agent…if you take 100 grams (amyeb more…depends)...maybe 10 grams an hour…you can kill all forms of hep virus… we have only seen a few cases where you need intravenous c to kill…this is for very serious situations…many doctors in russian and eastern europe know this…at least more than in america…in the west this is not done…i have no idea why because an american figured this out…dr. Linus pauling…do a search and you will find…google it…so many professionals in europe and russia know this…but in america…this is not common…sooooooo…;for my mma friends…put this in your bag of knowledge…hep c is very serious…but can be killed in weeks with constant vit c…every hour…till you have to run to the bathroom…this is called titration…you take it till your body releases in bowl…at this time you know how much to take…for hep…probably mega dose of 100 to 150 even 200 grams…now you know…

Aleks is one of my favorite fighters to watch and I thought he had a bright future amongst new, US fans.

Best of luck to him.

This is devastating to me. I like Alex a lot. Bus Rutten mentioned on inside mma that Fedor complimented Alex during their training session, something like he is always better than him. . Let assume there is potential opponent for Alex. It takes 2 months training preparation and announcement before the fight .The opponent can be vaccinated against hepatitis b vaccine and is protected 100 percent if he is interested in the fight money and prestige wise. I am not sure how long time it takes for the organism to create anti bodies against virus but I think not more that 3 weeks.
