Referee!

Officiating is important in any sport. Just ask the Baltimore Orioles in the ’96 ALCS.  Or ask the Seattle Seahawks after Superbowl XL. These two examples demonstrate just how important proper officiating can be. Saturday night gave us a glimpse into the mixed bag of officiating that exists right now in MMA.

Good officiating: Yves Lavinge refereeing C.B. Dollaway versus Jesse Taylor. Lavigne showed excellent professionalism after C.B. illegally struck a downed opponent with a knee to the head. Yves Lavigne called for time, and then preceded to clearly and slowly explain his ruling so the judges, fighters and the audience could all hear the warning. Lavigne was making sure that C.B. knew what would happen if he repeated the foul. Also once C.B. had secured the peruvian necktie Jesse Taylor appeared to tap his hand once (anyone remember C.B. and Amir). Yves Lavigne did not stop the fight and waited for the full tap. Yves' decision showed that he understood how a single tap can cause controversy and it is better to wait that extra second to see the full tap.

Bad officiating: Steve Mazzagati was in charge of Anthony Johnson versus Kevin Burns. The entire fight Johnson was complaining of being poked in the eye. Mazzagati saw the complaints but not the crime, however he should have been aware something was afoul especially in the third round when Johnson complained twice to being poked. Mazzagati's little mistakes built up into a significant mistake when Kevin Burns buried his finger into Johnson’s eye socket. As Anthony flew back from the pain Mazzagati wasn’t sure what occurred and assumed it was from a punch. The ruling was an unjust TKO victory for Kevin Burns.

Mario Yamasaki doesn't escape from bad officiating either. Mario has gotten into the bad habit of letting fights go to long once they are clearly over. It happened again with Jake O’Brien and Cain Velasquez. Once Cain achieved the crucifix mount and begun burying haymakers into a defenseless O’Brien the fight should have been stopped. But no Mario let it continue. I physically got up and left the room and came back to see the pounding continue. Eventually Yamasaki ended the fight but it seemed quite similar to his poor stoppage in the ‘Ninja’ Rua, Robbie Lawler fight.

While only one of the outcomes was altered due to poor officiating these examples still highlight the importance of proper refereeing for exciting, fair and most importantly safe fights.

What? Reffing is a problem?

J/K!! You actually made an excellent point when discussing Lavigne—”Yves Lavigne called for time, and then preceded to clearly and slowly explain his ruling so the judges, fighters and the audience could all hear the warning”.

IMO, this is a big problem in mma reffing. It is a high pace, action sport, and I am sure they don’t want to disrupt the flow of the fights. Unfortunately, when they rush calls, or don’t address them enough, they allow for their decisions to be questioned or even ignored. If you warn a guy as he is fighting, it is probably less effective than if you stop the action, explain the foul and the consequences. I firmly believe they need to take a little more time on their in-fight refereeing.

As for Johnson’s poked eye, I actually think herb made the right decision. Unfortunately, he wasn’t properly equipped to make the proper call. It should have been a DQ, NC or at least stop the fight, explain the situation to Burns and give johnson time to continue. This is where a replay could come in and i at least hope the fight gets overturned and made into a no contest. It is one thing for Herb to miss the poke and get the call wrong, it is totally another for the athletic commission to let the outcome stand.

Nice job on the post!

I didn’t see anything wrong with Mario allowing Cain-Jake’s fight to continue because Jake was still moving around trying to get out and improve his position. I prefer for there to be no question about whether or not a fight should have been stopped – like in Pride. Let the beatdown go on for a while just as long as the person getting the beatdown is not knocked unconscious.

Right

The only area where I’d disagree is with the assessment of Yamasaki. Personally, I know when he’s the ref that there’s likely going to be a definitive ending. I prefer that a lot.

Herb Dean???

Did we really just get an entire post on referees without mentioning Herb Dean. Seriously hes going to get a fighter killed one day. His stoppages are almost all late, and occasionally, seriously late to the point where everyone watching is screaming like Appolo’s wife at the begining of Rocky IV. This doesn’t even account for the other bone headed mistakes (allowing Ryan Ford to land 3 serious elbow strikes about 5 seconds after the bell because he didn’t notice the round was over).

Yes I understand that at this point they are the best in the world (sadly) but that doesn’t mean the athletic commissions shouldn’t be working hard to improve their employees.

i was trying to go with what we saw on Saturday night on Spike (the bar I went didn’t have Affliction on :( ). But yes an entire book could be written on the inconsistency that is Herb Dean

Yves could’ve let Jesse know how much time he had to recover if he wanted it, but nobody’s perfect.

Jesse said he was good to go. That was his mistake, not Lavigne’s.

Ranting!!

2 UFC events and 1 Afflction event later, and still no sign of Dan “the Fixer” Miragliotta. I wonder why? Josh Rosenthal hasn’t done anything to piss me off yet. YET! And has anyone noticed that Mario Yamasaki bares an odd resemblance to Rob Schneider (especially in 50 First Dates). “Let’s make a good fight!

Mirgliotta is out with shoulder injury/surgery.

Must be from the beating he took from James Thompson in the parking lot after his loss to Kimbo.

let hope he finds other interests for the sake of mma.

What’s interesting is that with the rumblings of Affliction’s next card taking place in New Jersey, he could play a very large part in the reffing of the card.
