"Affliction: Banned" Live Report

Last night I attended "Affliction: Banned" at the Honda Center, and overall it was a very good live show.  The aspects of the show that some complained about--the announcing, the microphones, and the production--did not affect the live experience at all.

One thing that really struck me is that the hardcore MMA fan base has grown significantly.  If you look at the traffic for MMA websites, you see an amazing level of growth across the board.  Many of the people that used to be casual fans are now hardcore fans, and the hardcore fan base may now be big enough to support a promotion.

I expect this PPV to do in the area of 85,000 buys.  I thought it would be much lower a few weeks ago, but the final push in advertising was very strong, and the press coverage really helped.  Even though that number will be seen as a success, it is not.  Even Tom Atencio has admitted they need 250,000 buys to break even.  However, it would be a solid first show, and if they are willing to take a few hits to build up a brand name, they can make it.

Affliction is the first group that I think can legitimately compete with the UFC.  They can't match them in size, production, or resources, but they can put on big cards headlined by the best fighter in the world.

The best news for Affliction was the way Arlovski and Barnett won.  They created future contenders for the WAMMA title, and both men came off like stars.  Arlovski is clearly the bigger name and star right now, and the next show should be headlined by Arlovski vs. Fedor assuming Randy Couture cannot fight.  Barnett could use some more time to be built up.

Speaking of Randy Couture, I expect legal action to come as a result of the end of that show.  Although it was not clearly stated, the implication was there that he was promoting a future Affliction fight with Fedor.  I don't think they'll go after Randy, I think they'll sue Affliction.  I guess we'll see soon enough.

Adam Swift reports that over 700 bars ordered this show.  That is good news, but it shouldn't be directly compared to the UFC numbers.  It's hard to do a direct comparison on charges because it depends on occupancy and other factors, but Affliction definitely charged less according to a few bar managers I spoke with.

One area that needs big improvement is fighter entrances.  The videos on the fighters were weak, and the entrances did not create the same type of theatrical environment you get live at UFC shows.  Fedor's entrance reaction was way lower than you'd think simply because he did not have that kind of solo, lights out entrance.

Overall, I think the show was a success.  Fedor looked like a killer, and they built up some contenders.  A lot rides on the buy number, and I will be skeptical of any number they put out, because they're not going to release a number that means the show was a flop.

At this point, they need a TV show to get their stars over.  It's hard to maintain momentum for four months between shows without something regularly reminding people to care.  For all the unanswered questions and problems, this was still an exciting and good show live.  We should know a lot more within a few weeks.

Well...

...I finally got to watch my recorded Affliction show. And I feel like such a fool for picking Irvin AND Sylvia.

Likewise

Couture does not want it with Fedor…(although I’ve always had this sentiment…even before Fedor dismantled Sylvia last night)

Yea, forget the biggest payday of his career at 45 years old, that other guy is scary!

I thought it was a pretty good show, rough but nothing they can’t iron out.
Things to fix:
- remove the music
- tone down the bias by the announcers, I don’t need to hear Trigg hype up his training partners
- sound in the ring please
- some of the camera work left a lot to be desired
- better entrances, introductions

Competition should prove good for the fans, more fights, more incentives for promotions to try and attract and keep fans. Seems good to me.

Good fix-it list, but I think they need to scrap Jay Glazer as the play by play guy altogether. Jay is a sports writer turned broadcaster who just moved up from doing sideline reporting. When you’re trying to take on the UFC, I don’t know why you wouldn’t pursue a bigger name (like they did with Michael Buffer as ring announcer). I’m sure there are numerous broadcasters (especially on FOX) that would have jumped at the opportunity.

Also, the lighting was terrible. This was probably the most glaring difference between the 2 promotions, and it was magnified when flipping channels—visually, Affliction Banned looked bad.

I could have done without the Don Johnson post-fight ring appearance as well.

Glazer has actually fought pro mma …. if you don’t believe me, go look up his fight record on Sherdog. He’s been banging the drum for MMA longer than anyone else in the mainstream media. Maybe he’s not your cup of tea as an announcer but as for MMA knowledge there is no one else at Fox more qualified.

that's good knowledge

You got me on that one. But as a broadcaster, he’s still subpar. His sideline experience would have helped last night—Big John McCarthy looked unnatural in that role.

Agreed...

McCarthy was better than I expected. But Glazer, while KNOWING what is going on, sounds like he does not.

Really?

I thought he did okay, other than the constant “only Affliction can bring you this great stuff!” thing.

And again, better than the EliteXC guy.

After being there live and seeing the undercard on FSN

I have to say that they must fix the sound. It sounded like people barely cheered for Belfort when he came out. In all actuality, the entire arena erupted for him. Television made it sound like the crowd really didn’t give a damn when that was clearly not the case.

Michael, what type of legal action will UFC get on Affliction? Is that considered tampering? Why would Affliction even take that route? You saw what happened with the IFL and the Xtreme Couture thing.

I was there too...

I felt they did a good job for a first effort. For some reason there was a huge gap between the 1st and 2nd fight, Almost an hour? And you could barely hear John McCarthy in the post fight interviews.

But I thought megadeth was great, and added a great deal of energy to the live show, and I’m most definitely not a megadeth/heavy metal fan.

I was also at UFC 76 Knockout, and the fans at Affllicition: Banned seemed more knowledgable. The fans knew the fighters, as there were huge ovations for Vitor, Babalu, Arlovski, and Fedor. There wasn’t too much booing, and the fans were incredibly enthusiastic during the exciting fights. And I’ve never seen so many Affliction T-shirts in my life.

I think the Cage is better for the sport, but it SUCKS when it’s a live event. The ring is so much better. I had almost dead center suite tickets, and i felt like i couldn’t see anything at UFC 76, but i had no problem watching the ring with Affliction.
