Wrestling Icon Dan Gable Teaching "Wrestling for Mixed Martial Arts"
Now, this is cool news:
Olympic wrestling legend Dan Gable and United States Olympic wrestling coach Mike Duroe will be holding a “Wrestling for Mixed Martial Arts” seminar Saturday, July 26 in Moorhead.
The Seminar will be held at Minnesota State Moorhead‘s Alex Nemzek Hall from 9 a.m. to noon.
The event is open to wrestlers and martial artists of all ages. The seminar teaches wrestling applications for use in mixed martial arts.
Gable is easily the most revered American wrestler in modern history. His accolades speak for themselves, but it's the hero worship he receives from legions of wrestlers across the country that truly makes him different than a Cael Sanderson type who has similar achievements yet not even close to the same level of adoration. The legendary tales of Gable's work ethic and tough mindedness are part of the religion of hard work you see so many wrestlers exhibit in their athletic performances.
I've read interviews where Gable has said he doesn't watch much MMA, but when he does he cheers for the fighters with a wrestling background. I don't know if that's changed much, but to see him at least tangentially involved with MMA is a blessing nevertheless. More, please.

You also have to remember that Gable built the Iowa University wrestling dynasty of the late 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. So while Sanderson’s wrestling accomplishments are actually more impressive than Gable’s, he hasn’t had the time to achieve similar glory in coaching (and he probably won’t, as Gable’s Hawkeyes won something like 15 NCAA titles, and 9 in a row). Additionally, because Gable is so much older than Sanderson, everyone’s wrestling coach (and possibly their respective coaches) told stories about Dan Gable to inspire that type of work ethic in their pupils, thus further cementing his amateur wrestling icon status.
But yeah, this is really cool.
