Thiago Silva, Lyoto Machida Say Things
Tatame spoke with both undefeated Brazilian light heavyweights after their UFC 89 fight was announced yesterday, and while neither had anything particularly revelatory to say this far out from the match, Silva did indicate his disappointment at having to fight another of his countrymen.
"I believe it’ll be a fight with more strategy. Lyoto likes to escape, fight moving backwards, it’s his style, but it’ll do my job", analyzed Thiago, that will face a Brazilian fighter for the second time in a row on the UFC octagon (the last one was Antônio Mendes "Samuray", at UFC 84). "Unfortunately yes, I can’t say that I like (facing Brazilian fighters), but I want the belt, and wanna prove my talent and win. I want the belt. I already can fight for the belt. I’ve already showed UFC what I can and what I can’t do. I’m here to fight for the belt."
In a brief excerpt from an as-yet-unpublished interview, Machida seemed confident that the bout would end in the way most do - with one of the fighters winning.
"I know that this fight will show who is going to lose. The event will sell it this way, two unbeaten guys. I wanna do a great fight, a great show."
I love this fight and think it puts UFC 89 in line to be one of the top shows of the year. I'm not at all surprised to see that people are considering Silva a huge underdog, but it's awfully early to count him out. The UFC will no doubt be in Machida's ear leading up to this fight, reminding him that a stoppage or submission would go a long way towards being able to market him as a contender/champion. Lyoto's not the type to rush or make mistakes, but his lapse in the closing round of the Tito Ortiz fight almost proved disastrous. It'll be interesting to see if Silva - who's known for his striking but is also a BJJ black belt - can put Machida in trouble on the ground.
This stat says it all: eight of Silva's last nine fights haven't made it past the opening frame, while seven of Machida's last nine have gone to decisions.

Better practice on your cardio right now Silva, cuz you gona do alot of running.
I don’t care how much Thiago presses the action, Machida always has a perfect game plan to escape. Great fight, but a horrible fight in my opinion since I’m biased.

Two opposites from the same country. Maybe it will end in the 2nd round to even things out

Hat's off to Joe Silva
I don’t care how boring Lyoto’s style is— a battle of unbeatens is the perfect way to get fans excited about an otherwise unexciting fighter.
If it’s not free on Spike, my guess will be 250K PPV buys.

I like this match-up…and we finally get to see if Thiago Silva is for real or not.

illogical matchmaking!
This is the worst possible match-up. Both these guys are stellar up-and-comers, why force one of them to mar his record at this point in his career?
Machida deserves to be no more than one fight away from a title shot, and that fight must be against someone better ranked than he is: Griffin, Jackson, Liddell, W.Silva, Jardine or Rua and no one else! The most sensible fight would be with W.Silva, who should also be no more than one fight away from a title shot. Assuming Liddell knocks out Evans, we’d get the winner of W.Silva vs Machida against the winner of Griffin vs Liddell. Now THOSE would be awesome fights.
T.Silva deserves to be no more than 2 fights away from a title shot, the first against a Top 10er and the second against a Top 5er. Sokoudjou would have been ideal for T.Silva’s next fight, or else Evans, but of course Evans was stupidly and undeservingly matched up with Liddell sigh
Machida and T.Silva each have the potential to win the belt with an unblemished record. It is heartbreaking that one of these guys will have to walk away from this fight with a loss.

illogical matchmaking!
well the mma fights a conflict of interesting 13-0 LHW title challengers without doubt adds plot to the Bisping vs. Leben event. It also looks as though the UFC was at last able to find a man that was willing to fight Machida and win, lose or draw I think Thiago Silva should be highly praised for tolerant the fight so many men did not.

Lyoto WILL take Silva's 0
First of all, Machida WILL remain undefeated after facing Thiago. Thiago only stands a chance of he can catch Lyoto in a ground n’pound attack. Unfortunately for Silva, Machida is too smart to get caught in a boring predictable g n’p attack, and The Dragon does have ground skills that can neutralize Thiago. Silva’s striking skills are nowhere near that of Machida’s, though he may have power however he lacks Lyoto’s speed and accuracy.
Next, it seems that many fans only know of Machida based on what they’ve seen in the UFC. “up and coming”?.....Lyoto is not an up and coming fighter, the man IS established WORLD CLASS and has beaten fighters who were/are champs in the UFC (Penn, Franklin, Ortiz). Have any of them seen The Dragon outstrike Bonnar, pulverize Dimitri or grapple with a much bigger Greco? Based on their comments, probably not.
It takes TWO to fight, and if many so-called MMA fans think Machida’s style is boring, then his opponents must REALLY be boring because he makes them all look like puzzled amateurs. Machida is but a handful of TRUE martial “artists” in MMA, which is diluted with boring predictable ground n’pounders….I doubt you’ll see Oritz pulling switch kicks on anyone anytime soon. Thiago doesn’t have the dynamic well-roundedness that Machida has, and therefore The Dragon will take Silva’s 0.
