Will Rampage Jackson's Rampage Hurt MMA?
Not hardly. I agree with Kelsey Philpott:
When an MMA fighter finds himself in trouble with the law, the immediate reaction of just about everyone in the community is to ask "how badly will this hurt MMA?"
Truth be told, Rampage's incident won't. Not really.
If anything the instinctive reflex of the MMA community to hold its breath and brace for a media ass whooping is probably more of a problem than the "bad" publicity that stems from one of these incidents.
The promoters, fighters, media, and fans alike must show more confidence in their sport and stop walking on egg shells. After all, how can the MMA community expect anyone else to believe in the sport if the community is constantly second-guessing itself.
These fighters are human, they're going to make mistakes, and they will be held accountable for their actions. However, a case of hit and run is not going to send MMA back to the dark ages; forcing deregulation or negatively impacting buy-rates and merchandise purchases.
Joyner offers a few other reasons in his post, but I would simply add that most of the problems MMA critics have are with the sport itself. Granted, those critics are also trying to tar and feather the sport's participants as being prone to violence. But while Rampage's actions yesterday were certainly destructive, it's unlikely they were sinister - something Adam "Pacman" Jones can't quite claim. I'm not suggesting the damage Rampage could've caused wouldn't rival or surpass the harm Jones has caused, but whatever the motivations of Rampage, it's unlikely he was trying to be nefarious. It would take very flimsy logic to point to yesterday's terrible incident as an indictment of mixed martial arts as a whole. I wouldn't put it past some critics, but I also wouldn't put much stock in the validity or power of any such claims.

Pacman would get in fights in night/strip clubs and not much else. Certainly nothing “nefarious”, and nothing Rampage hasn’t done himself. What is getting him in really hot water is that the police believe he’s not telling them the identity of an associate who shot up a strip club.
As for it not hurting the sport, well, its possible. But if networks and advertisers end up believing that the UFC doesn’t react to conduct issues with their stars, it may mean another 4-5 years of “We’ll have a network deal any day now.”

Pacman Jones’ incident resulted in a man’s paralysis—that will be the biggest factor when comparing it to Rampage’s rampage.
That incident didn’t hurt the NFL much at all because it was already established as the #1 sport. MMA is still in its infancy, and Rampage Jackson is one of its BIGGEST stars—this is terrible for the sport.
Nothing should change for the hardcore fans, but this can’t help Dana White in his quest to draw new fans, and more importantly, new sponsors.

Are you kidding?
Dana can market the hell out of this. “Ex-cop Forrest Griffin rematches Ex-Con Rampage Jackson!”

Ehh…I don’t see this having much of an impact on the sport as a whole. One fighter isn’t bigger than the sport and in reality this will be largely forgotten soon unless the ‘medically unfit’ turns up to be something crazy.

considering that I have heard nothing on this story outside of all of the MMA blogs (including espn.com’s front page), you’re probably right.
Regardless, any impact, at all, will be tough for even mmapayout to quantify.

It was up on ESPN for quite a bit
Just got bumped off the front page for the story about Papelbon’s wife being threatened. I don’t know that its because of the gravity of the story as much as it is the fact that MMA is not a priority for them.

Shrug
It won’t hurt MMA obviously. Just makes Rampage look like shit.

No way will this incident hurt MMA. I just hope that the fans don’t turn their backs on Rampage, and that the UFC does not use this to push him out the door.

Treat others as you want to be treated!

It can't be good for Affliction
3 days before their first card and all anyone is talking about now is Rampage Jackson

Good point.
In the short term, I think it may have some effect, but overall, I don’t see it effecting the sport at all.

No it won’t.
Nobody was hurt, there wasn’t am 8 hour armed standoff, there were no weapons, and as long as no illegal drugs or alcohol are involved, it will quickly go away.

Right, I think the narrative of PR disaster is wrong. It’ll be a mainstream story (barely) for one day.

No way this adversely affects MMA as a whole.
But that is an interesting take, that this will bleed the MMA fans’ attention during the Affliction buildup. Hadn’t considered that…

![Rashad Evans confirms the fight with Rampage Jackson is off UFC 107 on 'IT'S TIME!!!' with Bruce Buffer [at the 57 min mark] (audio)
"I am (going to fight him), but not when I’m supposed to. He’s kind of getting sidetracked taking other opportunities above fighting."
"They haven’t nailed down any dates, but they did say it would happen after the new year," said Evans. "I think they we’re waiting to speak with Quinton’s guys to see when exactly he feels he should be ready."
"If it couldn’t happen at all, I would definitely want to fight somebody else," said Evans, "but I know the UFC definitely has a lot invested in us fighting each other. It makes no sense for us to fight somebody else because then all that they have created is just a waste."
